Vimy Western Riding Club is celebrating 60 years of promoting western equestrian sports in the Cowichan Valley, and is hoping to see some new faces as they rebuild following the pandemic.

Like many program and events-based community groups, the riding club’s operations were heavily impacted by public health measures enacted during the height of COVID-19 pandemic.

“[This year] marks the return of our first full program year since the pandemic,” said long-standing club president Gord Williams. “We weren’t too sure what to expect, so the executive offered a slightly pared-down schedule of events and approached it like a rebuilding year.”

The club’s summer show series attracted a good mix of existing and new members, and Williams was encouraged to see the grounds in use again. He notes, however, that the club’s overall engagement — both at a participant and volunteer level — is still down compared to pre-pandemic numbers.

“There’s a lot of time and effort required behind the scenes to keep the club and its programming going and ensure that it’s affordable for participants. It can be a real challenge, though, when the engagement isn’t there to keep the momentum rolling.”

Founded in 1963, the club prioritizes inclusion, education, and fun, and continues to foster the advancement of riders of all ages and skill levels. While club membership is mostly based in the Cowichan Valley region, their seasonal programming draws participants from across Vancouver Island.

Club grounds are located behind the Vimy Community Hall at 3968 Gibbins Rd., Duncan. The grounds are equipped with a large competition ring, a smaller trail ring, four horse corrals, spectator stands, announcers’ box, parking area, and concession facilities. The club and its assets are maintained, in partnership with the Municipality of North Cowichan, and operated entirely by the goodwill of the club’s volunteers and members, with support from community partners.

The Club’s Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Vimy Community Hall. Williams and his fellow board members are hoping to see a good turnout. Vice-president Alec Wheeler is the newest member of the club’s executive and says it’s important to have fresh energy and new ideas at the table.

“There is a relatively small group of dedicated volunteers who have been doing the lion’s share of the work for the better part of the last decade. While it’s an incredible testament to the passion and generosity that the VWRC community is built on, it’s just not sustainable,” said Wheeler. “We need more people to saddle up and join the charge, so we can keep the club going for the next 60 years.”
