Impala Badminton Club

Impala Badminton Club has been in Witpoortjie for more than 20 years.

Currently operating at the Witpoortjie Recreational Centre, the club has been producing national players such Raymond Glad, Magda Herman, Elizka Lotz, Chris Jonk and junior provincial players Belinda and Jana Junior Botes.

The club also participates in the National Lower League Championships which was split into two tournaments, the Woodroffe Cup and Stravidis Cup.

Neels, who has been a member of the club for eight years jokes that he joined the club and started playing to get away from his wife.

“All jokes aside, I started playing Badminton to get fit and healthy. I started playing when I was young and I loved it. Badminton is a very difficult sport because you rely on lots of technique,” he said.

Impala regularly competes with clubs throughout the province such as Randfontein, Alberton, Wanderers, Carltonville and Pretoria in singles and doubles matches.

Magda has been playing Badminton since high school and joined the club three years ago.

“I also joined the club because of fitness reasons and to socialize because you meet other people who have the same interests,” she said.

Magda added the sport helps her relax after a long day at work.

“The sport is a stress reliever, after a long day at work, you get to smash some shuttlecocks (balls) as hard as you can and have fun,” said Magda.

The club has members from 13 to 70-years-old and practice Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm till late.

Although the winter chill has made the clubs numbers dwindle to just 15, Neels said this is an annual occurrence.

“As soon as summer returns, players slowly return. With our young players focusing on exams during this period also affects the numbers,” he said.
