A year ago Lochore Bowling Club was on the verge of jacking it in but now the grass is greener thanks to a change at the top and £10,000 of lottery cash.

Treasurer James Payne said it had been a tough 12 months and admitted, “We were in danger of closing, but now we have a new young committee.” They’ve also struck lucky with the lottery with £10,000 from the Awards for All scheme paying for major renovations of the bowling green.

The money allowed them to knock down old collapsing bankings and build new ones. Money was also used to resurface the greens and now they’re hoping to attract more players, young and old, to take up the sport.

Members showed off the club’s new look and displayed their community spirit in Benarty Civic Week with – despite the downpours – a well attended competition open to allcomers.

New MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, Roger Mullin, came along to help launch the event and Mr Payne said, “As part of Civic Week we held a bowling cup. It was great fun.” The club is looking for new members and members are working to get young people involved in the sport by visiting schools and teaching children to bowl.

He added, “We want everyone to get involved. People of all ages can play bowls and if they fancy having a game they should come in and talk to us.”
