Bourne junior Nathan Reynolds, with his parents Gabby and Dennis, was all smiles after scoring his 1,000th career point last Friday night in a blowout win by the Canalmen.
With Nathan Reynolds needing just four points to reach the 1,000 career points milestone, the Bourne High School boys’ basketball team would have liked nothing more than to get their star forward some immediate touches in the paint, two quick buckets and move on in what ended up being an 85-62 blowout for the home team. That was the plan Head Coach Scott Ashworth had laid out against Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical last Friday night, February 9.
Reynolds would have liked to have it all behind him as quickly as possible, too. Whenever a player approaches a milestone like that it can get in his or her head. It’s better to just be done with it as fast as can be.
Unfortunately, GNBVT also knew Reynolds was approaching the lofty number. The Bears did all they could to deny the big man the ball in the paint in the first quarter, denying him touches by overplaying the post.
What that did was open things up for everyone else. Over the first couple of minutes Reynolds had just one basket, but his team was doing just fine as it slowly built the lead up as everyone else was getting good looks at the basket. With Dom Quelle and Leo Andrade both slashing to get to the cylinder, Bourne was already starting to grow its lead when the big moment finally hit.
As the first quarter neared completion, with just over a minute to go, Reynolds scored in his typical fashion. The 6-foot, 4-inch big man grabbed a rebound on the left block, went straight up and kissed the ball off the window and into the cup to put his team ahead 17-10.
The place went crazy. The packed gymnasium, with more than half the crowd holding up signs in support of the junior, exploded. The game was stopped quickly for a ceremony where Reynolds received a commemorative basketball from Ashworth and posed for photos with his parents.
Once that was over and the team simply settled in to play hoops, everything fell in place for the lopsided Bourne win. With no more pressure to deal with, the Canalmen ran their offense very well and turned a 21-12 lead after one quarter into a 47-23 lead at the half.
Reynolds, as he has done so many times during his three seasons with the Canalmen, led the scoring for the victors. He finished with a game-high 23. Quelle was next with 21 and Mike Dankert had 18. Andrade finished with 12.
BHS was scheduled to play a game on Tuesday night, February 13, but the big snowstorm that hit southeastern Massachusetts forced that one against West Bridgewater to be postponed to a later date. Today, February 16, the team will be on the road to take on Apponequet High School at 6:30 PM. Then, on Sunday afternoon, the Canalmen will host Monomoy at 5 PM.
BHS is currently sitting with a 15-1 record overall. The team also holds the No. 2 position in the most-recent MIAA Division 4 power rankings.
