LEGENDS AT CANTERBURY
The Canterbury Cricket Club takes great pride in introducing another publication about the life and times of some of the people of this club.
Canterbury was founded in 1887. It has played cricket on the Canterbury Sports Ground since 1905. It is the oldest continually playing cricket club in the Eastern Cricket Association.
Legends at Canterbury celebrate this longevity and seeks to answer the question: what are the circumstances, both external and internal to the Club that has allowed it to thrive when so many other Clubs, founded at around the same time as Canterbury, have folded?
Canterbury Cricket Club historian, Sam Gardiner, suggests that there are key individuals who create a sustainable culture that provides a dynamic of continuity. Culture can be lived and handed down through generations of cricketers.
The Canterbury Cricket Club believes in the importance of nurturing and sustaining a connected and inclusive culture. A culture, such as described in this book, can have a positive impact on individuals, on the club collective and becomes a social good within the broader community.
This is Canterbury’s fourth recent cricket club publication. Others are Cricket at Canterbury: 125 years of cricket at Canterbury, Great Innings at Canterbury and Great Bowlers at Canterbury. All have been written by Sam Gardiner. Sam started playing cricket at Canterbury in 1964, as an 11-year-old. He finished in 1989, having played as a wicketkeeper in the first XI for 20 years. Today, Sam sits on the Hill at Canterbury, with old Canterbury friends, to watch the changing fortunes of the Club.
