Welcome to Cam Mills Bowls Club

We are a friendly Sports and Social club open all year round with a bowls green to facilitate 6 rinks, outside seating, well stocked bar for drinks & snacks, skittles alley, darts board, live BT sports and function room for hire throughout the year.

The bowls season runs from mid-April to end of September and there are lots of friendly and more competitive matches for both adults and youths.

Cam Mills Bowls Club was established in 1915 but has grown significantly over the years. In the last 12 years the bowls section has become more competitive and successful within league and county competitions.

We have strong teams in both the ladies and men's sections with several members who play to a very high standard and have been selected to play Middleton Cup (Men's Gloucestershire County team) and have reached Bowls England National finals at Leamington Spa (where the 2022 Commonwealth games was played).

Alongside the competitive league matches, we have a full season of friendly games on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons where we play other teams from around the county.

We also run in house club competitions each year where all bowls members have the opportunity to compete in several different game categories to win historical trophies.

This year's results for the league, county, and club competitions can be found in 2022 Honours Board section under the Bowls section tab.

The social side of the club is also very well supported throughout the year with members enjoying drinks in our comfortable lounge which also shows live BT sports on a large 60inch TV.

The skittles alley is used from Monday to Friday with several different teams who take part in the Berkeley & District skittles league which runs from September to April. The skittles alley, or the room, is available for hire on non-games nights and during the weekends.

We hold a selection of events including Bingo, quiz nights, fun family skittles, themed meal nights and music events.

Club History

In 1915 the bowls green was built for use by the mill employees.

We have photographic evidence that during 1916 the club played against a team of soldiers from Standish hospital.

The turf from Cam Peak was delivered by horse and cart.

During the 1960's, non-mill workers were allowed to join to help fulfil fixtures against other clubs and / or to finance the upkeep of the green.

In 1979 the mill owners decided they could no longer financially support the green, the present club committee decided to purchase the green, the wooden club house and a row of garages. A loan from Wadworth brewery was obtained which signified a beneficial supplier / customer relationship. The garages were converted into a club room and skittle alley. This contributed to the financial success of the club and much of the work was carried out by the club members.

In the 1980's, the club made numerous changes and improvements including enlarging the bowling green, a watering system and the construction of a new clubhouse.

In the early 1990's, it had been decided to repay the Wadworth Brewery mortgage, which would allow the club to negotiate discounts on purchases from other breweries and have sufficient funds to run the club and retain a suitable balance.

The 2000's seen another addition to the club by adding new changing rooms and raising the skittle alley roof (as seen in the centenary presentation).

Since then, many more changes have been made and updated to keep the club looking fresh. The most recent project which happened this year was changing the lounge roof from a flat roof to a pitched roof.

Thanks to the support from members through numerous fund raising, the lounge has had a complete refurbish including new carpet and furniture. The outside area has had other improvements and new outdoor seating.
