Peterborough is in the running to defend its unwanted title of the worst place in England.

Users of ILiveHere.co.uk have voted the Cambridgeshire city as England’s worst for the past three years, a feat only previously achieved by Hull.

The results for 2021 featured quotes from voters, which were suspiciously similar to those used in previous years, and did not have anything remotely positive to say about Peterborough.

The ILiveHere listing for Peterborough said: “This Cambridgeshire **** town had a staggering number of votes daily from when the poll opened, nearly cashing the site at one point.”

One commenter confidently stated: “I lived in Peterborough for 15 years and all I can say is wow. what a f*****g DUMP”, while another added: “It is horrible and I urge you all to vote for it at the next vote as the biggest s***hole in England.”

Voting for this year’s list closed on New Year’s Eve and the final results will be announced in due course.

However, the most recent running total showed that Peterborough had received just over 5 per cent of the vote, meaning that it is trailing well behind the current ‘leaders’ Aylesbury (25.78 per cent), Huddersfield (21.94), Luton (6.18) and Liverpool (5.27).

Why we defend Peterborough

This means that it looks like Peterborough will relinquish its unwanted crown.

At CambridgeshireLive, we feel like this has been a long time coming. The sneering negativity and the results of the last three years’ polls are doing the city of Peterborough a great disservice.

A busy, well-connected city surrounded by beautiful countryside, Peterborough has plenty going for it and its centre combines historic architecture with exciting future developments.

Few places can claim to have a centerpiece as definitive as Peterborough Cathedral, which towers over the city.

An awe-inspiring example of Gothic architecture, the cathedral is imposing yet beautiful and anyone visiting the city will be struck by the scale and grandeur of the 12th-century building.

Its tranquil gardens also provide an oasis of calm in the city’s bustling centre.

The cathedral’s gardens lead out into Cathedral Square, where the Guildhall and St John the Baptist Church provide yet more history in the centre of Peterborough.

The two distinctive structures are complemented by a number of bars and restaurants around the square’s perimeter, bringing life and verve into the city centre.

Big changes coming to Peterborough

However, if you like your cities to have a modern flavour as well, Peterborough has you covered. Plenty of developments are on the way to the city through the Embankment Masterplan.

A plan to make the Embankment the heart of Peterborough and to reconnect the city with its riverside, the Masterplan will include a new £30m university and potentially a new stadium for Peterborough United.

The Masterplan will hopefully change the minds of those who remain unconvinced of Peterborough’s merits, revitalise the waterside land and expand the city centre.

Ideally, it will keep Peterborough well away from polls such as this in the future.
