MATCH REPORT: BURTON ALBION 2-0 NEEDHAM MARKET

5 November 2022

ALBION are through to the second round of this season's Emirates FA Cup after a 2-0 victory over Southern League side Needham Market

A first half strike from Deji Oshilaja had Albion in front at the break but any chances of a cup shock were only finally extinguished when substitute Joe Powell fired home with the last kick of the game.

The visitors dug in throughout the second half and had a couple fo skirmishes on the edge of the Burton penalty area towards the end of the game as they looked to force a replay but the Albion defence held firm to see the Brewers through to the second round of the competition for the second season in a row.

Albion showed four changes to the side defeated at Hillsborough in League One last Saturday. Viljami Sinisalo took over in goal whilst Cameron Borthwick-Jackson returned at left back. Charlie Lakin and Davis Keillor-Dunn also returned in the midfield and attacking ranks as Albion looked to make Cup progress.

An early stoppage due to a broken corner flag preceded the first real chance of the game as Tom Hamer flung a long throw in towards the six-yard box and Oshilaja flicked a header agonisingly wide of the far post.

Albion thought they had grabbed the lead on seventeen minutes when a deep cross was headed firmly goalwards by Adeboyejo only for Marcus Garnham in the Needham goal to make a good save and as Burton players seemed convinced it had crossed the line Daniel Morphew cleared his lines.

Oshilaja's rising drive was deflected inches over the crossbar as the half hour mark approached and from the resulting corner Garnham got a strong hand to keep out Lakin's rasping drive.

The skipper was not to be denied though and after seening an initial shot saved by Garnham, OSHILAJA retained his composure to retrieve the ball and fire home.

Terry Taylor, still to open his account in a Burton shirt blazed a great chance over on 37 minutes with the goal at his mercy as Albion looked to take a real grip on proceedings. Lakin saw another chance to shoot from distance and his dipping effort was not far over the top of the goal as Albion continued to dominate.

Keillor-Dunn also saw a chance to test Garnham from dostance but once again the Marketmen stopper did enough to get something behind the ball and shovel it away from danger.

Jonny Smith cut inside from the right as the first half came to wards a conclusion and although his curling shot beat Garnham it dropped the wrong side of the post.

Half time: Burton Albion 1-0 Needham Market

Albion continued to dominate as the second half got under way although there was a glimmer of a chance for Needham Market on 54 minutes when Ross Crane saw a chance to drive towards the edge of the box but Adrian Mariappa was there to snuff out any serious threat on Sinisalo's goal.

The visitors made a double change to freshen things up as the game approached the hour mark and Albion also chose to change things up with the introduction of Joe Powell and Mustapha Carayol just after the sixty minute mark.

Carayol was quickly making his mark finding Adeboyejo who in turn found Oshilaja in the box but the skipper slipped the ball beyond the onrushing Garnham and frustratingly wide of the far post.

Mariappa, an FA Cup finalist earlier in his career with Watford, went off with twenty minutes remaining to be replaced by Tyler Onyango as Oshilaja dropped into the back four.

Carayol dug out a wonderful cross for Adeboyejo on 76 minutes but the striker was crowded out as he looked to get his shot away after chesting the ball down well.

Powell sent Adeboyejo through on 84 minutes but the striker's touch was a little heavy and allowed Garnham to come out and block at his near post at the expense of a corner.

Needham piled bodies forward late on in search of an equaliser but their Cup run was over when Christian Frimpong lashed a stoppage time chance over the bar at the back post.

POWELL finally put a seal on victory firing in with the last kick of the game after a burst through the middle from Terry Taylor.
