BROOMFIELD — About two weeks removed from placing seventh at the Front Range League’s first tournament, Monarch’s up-and-coming squad displayed noticeable improvement in Tuesday’s encore.

The Coyotes finished with a pair of top-10 golfers and placed fourth as a team (363 strokes) in the second of three FRL meets. Sophomore Grasyn Trobaugh, who shot a personal-best 13-over-par, noted that several of her Monarch teammates stepped up at a breezy Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.

“Our scorers that weren’t doing the best really came through today and they carried us through,” Trobaugh said following her final hole. “Everyone just did pretty good today and we all connected our shots. Even some girls that had their ‘bad’ days were still doing pretty good. I think we all just came together.”

Trobaugh’s 85 strokes landed her in a four-way tie for 10th place while senior Lillian Dehner led Monarch with an 84 — tied for eighth.

“Everything kind of connected today,” Trobaugh said. “My putting was on point and my shorthand really came through.”

In a crowded top bunch on the team side, Fossil Ridge led with 345 shots, Loveland took runner-up at 348 and Legacy was just behind at 350.

Erie junior Logan Hale won the individual field thanks to a 1-over-par performance that included four birdies. Coming off of a frustrating previous three days competing in a pair of tournaments, the University of Denver women’s golf commit said she was motivated to get things back on track.

“The front end was a little rough and then on the back, I kind of figured something out in my putting and in my driver,” Hale said. “My speed putting is a little bit off, but today I was sick and tired of missing putts, so I figured it out.”

Erie placed fifth on the team side (364 strokes) with standout sophomore Hadley Ashton being a late scratch.

Other local golfers in the top 10 included Fairview’s Ava Hickey in second place (76), Legacy’s Ayla Milan tied for third (77) and both Erie’s Taylor Hale and Fairview’s Alexia Perez were among the four knotted in 10th.

Perez, a one-year exchange student from Spain, was navigating just her second tournament golfing for Fairview. The junior said that while Colorado holes have been much longer and wider compared to her home country, it hasn’t been too difficult of an adjustment.

“It’s really fun because all my friends are (on the team),” Perez said of joining the Knights. “It’s like hanging out with them while we do a sport and it’s outside and it’s beautiful in Colorado.”

FRL teams will gather again on April 27 for the league’s third tournament at Thorncreek Golf Club in Thornton.
