Stephen Gaunt

It is with great sadness that we inform the passing of Stephen Gaunt from Aldermaston Badminton Club.

Steve passed away on Sunday morning after a long illness. Steve was our secretary for over 20 years and will be greatly missed. His illness had meant he hadn't played since before COVID but he had carried on as secretary all that time.

All the Basingstoke committee send their sincere condolences.

BDBL Restricted 2022 Tournament Report (Added 24 December 2022) - Expired (24 January 2023)

Basingstoke League Restricted Tournament 2022 Report

Attached is the chairman's report for the Basingstoke Restricted tournament held on 4th December 2022 at Everest Community Health and Leisure Club.

The tournament was almost cancelled so I am grateful of the entries that came through, but it was a pity that the ladies section had to be cancelled through lack of interest, only three pairs sent in their entries.

My thanks go to Ruth Cairns, our president, who helped out all day and it would not have gone so smoothly without her. Ruth presented the winners and runners up with their trophies.

There were enough Men’s entries for two groups of five pairs. Because we had plenty of time and to give the players enough games, it was organised that each pair played to Three games of 21 points. Handicaps were per division players status.

Men’s

Winners: Dan Shepherd and Joe Bundy

Runners up: Graham Woodrow and Kevin Scarpe

Mixed

Winners: Katie Woods and Ryan Doe

Runners up: Rebecca Butterfield and Max le Hen

Detailed report is attached below. Well done to all!!!

Alresford Club - Platers Needed (Added 5 July 2022) - Expired (30 November 2022)

Urgent - Players needed for Alresford Badminton Club

Alresford Badminton Club play in Perins school every Wednesday. The club has now been informed by the school that we can no longer hire individual courts and must hire the whole hall of four courts. The club is still trying to recover from Covid-19 and the numbers are way down and can not fill 4 courts at present. So we are looking for players who would like to play on a Wednesday which could increase the numbers enough to book the hall.

The club only does pay and play at the moment and charge £5.00 per night.

Venue: Perins School, Pound Hill, Alresford SO24 9BS

Time: Wednesday Evenings 7:30pm - 9:30pm

ACDBL League

Also, the BDBL League organises and enters a team into the ACDBL league, this team is currently competing in the top division which starts again for a normal October - May Season. We have two requests:

1. Please share with any club players that are interested in playing with the other top players in Basingstoke against some strong teams from Aldershot and Camberley. alongside their normal Basingstoke league matches. If they are interested they should contact David Irvine (Di2g10 @ gmail . com). If we have many people interested then we may visit respective club nights or organise a session to ascertain people's current standard of play to ensure we are putting out the strongest team possible. Priority will be given to players who have previously played in the team and worked towards getting it promoted.

2. Due to Fort Hill school closing the team needs a new home night location. If any clubs would like to share a venue with the team for the 6 home nights the team needs to host please contact us. The Ideal here is a club which is already entering enough teams to need a dedicated match night but over the course of the season wouldn't need a match night every week and a couple more matches would allow a more efficient block booking. Again please contact Di2g10 @ gmail . com.

ReturnToBadminton (Added 23 August 2021) - Expired (30 November 2021)

Return to Competitive Badminton

Join the UK's most played racket sport as competitive badminton returns to the Basingstoke area. Badminton returned after step 4 of the governments roadmap but despite the lifting of restrictions there are still many challenges to be faced, with some experiencing anxiety about returning to play without restrictions after such a long period of time.

At their recently held AGM the Basingstoke and District Badminton League set out their vision for a return to play. It was agreed that for the 2021/22 season only that :

- No player nominations for teams, so players could play up or down without penalty and also play for other clubs if they so wish.

- There will be no promotion or relegation for the 2021/22 season.

- Season will run from 1st November 2021 to 31st May 2022.

- Structure to remain the same as current, Open, Mixed and Ladies.

- Players should take their own refreshments and hand sanitiser as there is uncertainty about what will be available at each location.

- Captains should exchange details in case there is a need to advise any infections.

End of season Statement (Added 19 April 2020) - Expired (31 August 2020)

End of Season Statement

Note to all involved in the Basingstoke League

Hi all,

This is a confirmation of the decision that the league has now finished , because of the Government lockdown policy and the non-availability of venues.

The indications are that the restrictions will not be lifted until June or July. I have asked you all to relay to me your thoughts regarding on how we should handle the league status and how we should move forward.

The majority have decided that the results should stand as they are, but with regard to the new season coming up, we must decide whether a promotion and relegation should made. I have decided that we will make this decision at the AGM, which should be in July. To assist in this decision, I have collated the information to indicate where teams would finish if the season was completed and placed it on a spread sheet, with some sort of explanation.

It is more important that all the teams are represented at this meeting to decide how we go forward.

In the meantime please stay safe and talking saves the boredom.

News round up w/e 26th April

Champions Waverley A completed a perfect season in Open Division One with their twelfth win after beating Andover 9-0. The result hides the fact that Andover fought hard and that five rubbers went the distance. Ian Aherne, Andrew Mountford, Peter Bevell, Neil Atkins, Phillip Jaap and Wayne Drake were all unbeaten as Waverley registered maximum points as they finished twelve points clear at the top of the table. Runners up BH Pegasus A completed their fixtures with a 9-0 victory over a two pair Hurst A. Third placed Viking A beat winless Whitchurch 8-1 with hat tricks from Birkharam Purja and Keith Miles and from Richard Whatley and his partner. A single from Josh Bliss and Dinesh Tadikonda ensured that Whitchurch avoided the whitewash.

A 9-0 for Waverley B over Hurst B enabled to leapfrog Aldermaston and into runners up spot in Open Division Two. Maximums from Adam Hood and Paul Branch, James Huggins and Stuart Dubber and from Jason O?Kane and Phil Hood has put them in pole position to overhaul BH Pegasus B. Indeed, a win of 7-2 or better in their final fixture against bottom side Phoenix A will be enough for them to give them the title.

A surprise 8-1 defeat for Alresford to lowly Phoenix B has cost them finishing runners up in Open Division Three. Despite a 6-3 win in their final fixture, it was their opponents Beechdown B who took second place by a three point margin.

Champions Viking completed their fixtures with a regulation 6-0 win over bottom side Beechdown B in the Ladies 4 League. Runners up Waverley beat Andover Sports Ladies in their penultimate match to reduce the gap at the top of the table to twenty four points.

BH Pegasus shrugged off the handicap of only having two pairs to beat Phoenix B 6-3 to retain second place in Mixed Division Two, with hat tricks from Ryan Doe and Theresa Simmonds and from Alex McNair and Christie Yao seeing them home.
