Uphill Castle Cricket Club members involved in M4 crash

A cricketer has been killed and six other members of his club injured in a crash on the M4 in Berkshire.

Ashley Doyle, 27, was a front seat passenger of a people-carrier with members of Uphill Castle Cricket Club in Weston-super-Mare, when it left the carriageway late on Monday evening.

The party had been returning from an awards ceremony at Lords.

Police are investigating although it is thought no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Jed Pitman who was a friend of Mr Doyle, a radio producer, described him as an "incredible guy".

"He was young, enthusiastic and amazingly talented. Everyone who knows him is absolutely devastated," he said.

Tributes have also been paid by Somerset's cricket community.

Somerset all-rounder Peter Trego tweeted: "Lost for words but I know everyone at the club will be strong and offer total support and love where needed the most"

Somerset chief executive Guy Lavender said: "Cricket is a very close community in Somerset - it's terrible news and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and the club."

The men had been travelling in a black Citroen C4 Grand Picasso having attended a ceremony in which the club's under-19s team had picked up the a NatWest T20 club of the year trophy.

Mr Doyle died at the scene. The driver and two others were taken to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital with serious injuries after he crash between junctions 8/9 and 10, near Maidenhead.

Three remaining men are being treated at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
