Complaints about mould growing in dirty cups and overflowing litter bins prompted me to give a couple of hours a week to tidying up the Hunslet back office when I retired. Already a turnstile operator – promoted from raffle ticket seller – I also searched the net for the worst jokes for the kids’ page in the match day programme and tracked down past players for ‘Where Are They Now?’
The office is tidier now, except straight after a match – but mouldy cups still escape detection occasionally!
After interviewing a former club secretary, two large bags of minutes books dating back to 1873 arrived, prompting me to start cataloguing the archives and sorting all the old programmes into chronological order – a winter’s work!
Letter writing, eBaying, mascot certificate making, even taking PNG players out on day trips; then there’s the monthly ‘Memories Club’ bringing together past players, fans and residents of Hunslet. The occasional programme stall and volunteer at my local amateur club add to life’s joys.
