“If you are looking for answers to the profound enigma of the meaning and nature of meaningful coincidences in your own life, answers that bring psychological insight and spiritual understanding, then you have come to the right place. Professor Surprise has given us the finest book of its kind.” —Allan Combs, coauthor Synchronicity : Through the Eyes of Science, Myth and the Trickster

The experience of meaningful coincidences is universal. They are reported by people of every culture, every belief system, and every time period.
Synchronicity examines the evidence for the human influence on the meaningfulness of events, and the way the modern computational model of the mind predicts how we create meaning.

It demonstrates that these events, based on the activity of the mind, are caused by the person who perceives them.

In this fascinating work, you will:
  • Learn to use your amazing ability to create synchronistic events
  • Discover how your mind creates the reality you experience
  • Unlock your brain's vast resources of connectivity and creativity
  • Change from living as a separate being to living as a part of the unified whole
Synchronicity will show you how you already create events around you, and make you a conscious co-creator of your reality. Dr. Surprise describes the miracles of your brain's processes, merging the worlds of modern physics and ancient mysticism to reveal abilities you have always possessed, but which were not fully understood--until now.

Learn to make reality dance to the rhythms of your thoughts.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Synchronicity is teeming with delightful and often compelling surprises about the nature of meaningful coincidences in contemporary life. The author's prose is playful, provocative, and profound. Though you may not agree with all of Professor Surprise's conclusions, this book should be required reading for anyone wanting to understand the magnificence and mystery of synchronicity."
--Gary E. Schwartz, PhD, professor of psychology and medicine, The University of Arizona, and author of The Sacred Promise

"An interesting mix of mythology, neuroscience, and common sense, this book takes a serious, but light-hearted look at the way synchronicity works and the degree to which it can be controlled. Going well beyond the ideas of Jung, synchronicity's discoverer, psychotherapist Surprise draws on anthropology, String Theory, and Walt Disney to make the case that our internal states do effect external events...."
--Anna Jedrziewski, New Age Retailer

Synchronicity, by Kirby Surprise, is an enjoyable ride through the world of synchronistic events (SEs) if you are willing to take that ride. If you picked up this book to know what Kirby thought is going on with SEs, then this book is for you. But if you wanted a mysterious tome of Synchronistic Magic, then you may be either: disappointed because this book doesn't give a nice stack of magic recipes, or blown away because it delivers if you take it on the fun side.

I was enjoying this book very much. cruising through chapter seven (The Big Picture) as he was building on various scientific theories. I just finished his Flatlanders and the Cone example, when after he introduced the Archetypes and Thoughtforms, he let me have it.

My own thoughts causes SE effects around me.

It is not like he haven't been telling me this all along, but it wasn't until this moment that the thought finally sank in. Adding String Theory, and M- and N- Space, didn't help his case, in my view. Frankly, it sounded a bit like a psychic using quantum physics to explain how psychic powers work.

However, chapter 9 (Mystical Mumbo Gumbo) was comforting. He wasn't out to explain SEs, but to present a possible explanation to the synchronicity phenomenon that might exist just outside our universe. By the way, I happen to agree with his examples of the Pastafarians and the priests of science, so I opened my mind to the possibility. But just wide enough.

The last chapter, Practical Magic, is the perfect way to finish this book. However, if this is the only chapter that you read, it would have been unproductive. I agree with Kirby's quote:

"Reading the book is causing explosions of SEs around the readers, as intended."

After I finished this book, I have been noticing more SEs myself, and I haven't even played the seven games in the last chapter. I'll keep all his advices in mind, specially this one:

"Don't believe the game you create."

Being a student of Ernest Holmes book, "Science of Mind," as well as the "Unity Church," whose books deal with using the mind to attain health, wealth and success, I found Dr.Surprise's book, "Synchronicity,"
a revelation and an eye opener...One of the things Dr. Surprise says in his book, "Synchronicity," is how to create a "thought form" that will manifest for some people to see by visualizing or looking at a picture for 20 minutes a day of the thing you want to appear in your life....This technique was taught by Ernest Holmes and the Unity Church more than 50 years ago....Call it the "Law of Attraction," or "Creative Visualization," which is what this technique is more known by today....What ever you want to call it, be it "prayer," or "magnetic mind dynamics", it works.....Just read Dr. Surprise's book for the confirmation of this....His explanation of how the mind works producing this phenomenon of synchronicity is pure genius and he has probably discovered things about this that not even Dr. Carl Jung, who discovered it, was aware of, as Dr. Surprise explains....Dr. Surprise's book answered for me how it was possible for my father to pick up a ringing phone in New York's Grand Central Station and hear some guy ask if a person with my father's first and last name was there....The odds of this happening is astronomical, to say the least...It was later learned by my father that
there was a flower store in the neighborhood where this guy worked (the guy with my father's name) and the caller had dialed the wrong number.....Any one reading Dr. Surprise's book will be enlightened as if he had a master guru teacher before him or the Dalai Lama......"Synchronicity" will change the way you think for the better and answer a lot of questions that people have asked about why these strange things known as "synchronicities' happen.

Synchronicity by Kirby Surprise is a phenomenal book just about any way you slice it. When I ordered my copy, I half-expected a re-hash of Jungian theory interspersed with dabs of quantum mechanics to make the pie timely. Jung is there, but not overly so. Surprise even dismantles Jung's concept of the archetype as an independently existing factor in human consciousness. What surprised me was the brash assertion of some controversial corollaries to String Theory which places us in a rather ghostly world of parallel realities influenced by our thought forms. I am gratified by Surprise's adventurous spirit in this regard and wonder if he has risked his professional credibility to some degree by being so open-minded. I have immersed myself in quantum theory for the last several years following attendance at a Matrix Energetics seminar. There is certainly agreement between the teachings of Dr. Richard Bartlett and Dr. Surprise on the nature and function of universal reality, but each approaches the subject from a different direction. In Jungian analysis, the goal is to make the unconscious conscious, and this is what Surprise sees as the basis of synchronistic events. Bartlett, on the other hand, wants to liberate the unconscious from conscious control while preserving the unconscious' holistic and non-rational integrity. Both Bartlett and Surprise, using similar theoretical evidence, arrive at essentially the same place. Surprise is adamant about his commitment to the scientific method, while Bartlett uses it as a springboard to a magical alteration of consciousness. Surprise is wryly humorous in his approach while Bartlett is riotously comical in the iconoclastic manner of the Marx Brothers. My "paranormal" experiences at Matrix Energetics seminars leaves no doubt in my mind of the absolute validity of what Bartlett is teaching, and Surprise's book only confirms what I already knew firsthand. Without the Matrix Energetics background, a first-time reader of Surprise's book would likely find it outrageously at the fringe and a woo-woo enterprise of dubious credibility. I ate it up. Surprise's practical exercises in exploring the synchronistic phenomenon are well-conceived and should allow the reader to get beyond mere mental speculation about the subject. For the neophyte, it could be damned scary. At one Matrix seminar I encountered a hazy double of myself from a parallel reality that left me speechless and convulsed with mirth at the same time. At a subsequent seminar, the attendees were being prepared for "hallucination practice". I had a fleeting image of the Hindu goddess Gayatri, of whom I have some knowledge. I thought, "What a hallucination that would be," as the goddess has ten arms and five faces. In hallucination practice we pair up with a partner and let our unconscious reveal whatever comes up in the moment. A woman asked me if I would join her in the exercise. I agreed and we walked to the back of the conference room (there were about 300 people there) and faced each other. We looked at each other's name tags. Her first name was Gayatri. If I were you, I wouldn't pass up a reading of Surprise's book, or a session at a Matrix Energetics seminar for that matter.

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit heavy duty

I bought this book to be able to balance out the various ideas surrounding synchronicity, and it certainly did that! In some places it was a bit heavy going as it leaps into the scientific thoughts relating to synchronicity. For any one really studying the subject it is useful, but be prepared for a bit of a serious reading!
