Ski Jumping in Washington State: A Nordic Tradition (Sports) Paperback – February 1, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
"Wherever two or three Norwegians gathered together, they constructed a jump and held competitions.'? -Harold "Cork'? Anson
Ski jumping, once Washington's most popular winter sport, was introduced by Norwegian immigrants in the early twentieth century. It began at Spokane's Browne's Mountain and Seattle's Queen Anne Hill, then moved to midsummer tournaments on Mount Rainier in 1917 and expanded statewide as new ski clubs formed. Washington tournaments attracted the world's best jumpers--Birger and Sigurd Ruud, Alf Engen, Sigurd Ulland and Reidar Andersen, among others. In 1941, Torger Tokle set two national distance records here in just three weeks. Regional ski areas hosted national and international championships as well as Olympic tryouts, entertaining spectators until Leavenworth's last tournament in 1978.
Lawyer, historian and award-winning author John W. Lundin recreates the excitement of this nearly forgotten ski jumping heritage.

About the author
John W. Lundin is an attorney, historian and author, with homes in Seattle and Sun Valley, who has written extensively about Washington and Idaho history. His great-grandparents moved to Bellevue, Idaho, in 1881, drawn by the area's silver strike, and were early pioneers in the Wood River Valley. John has written 43 papers about Wood River Valley history that are available at the Center for Regional History of The Community Library in Ketchum, and his lectures there can be seen on its website, https://www.slideshare.net/CommunityLibrary. In 2018, John’s first book, Early Skiing on Snoqualmie Pass, received a prestigious Skade award as outstanding regional ski history book from the International Ski History Association. Ski Jumping in Washington - A Nordic Tradition, will be published by History Press in January 2021, and will be part of a joint exhibit on ski jumping between the National Nordic Museum and the Washington State Ski and Snowboard Museum. John’s website is www.johnwlundin.com.
John is a long-time sailor, rower and skier, who learned to ski using wooden skis, cable bindings, leather boots and rope tows. He first skied at Sun Valley in 1960, after a 24-hour train ride from Seattle, when a one-week pass cost $39. He is a founder and board member of the Washington State Ski & Snowboard Museum. John and his family spend significant time in the mountains around Sun Valley, and his wife Jane’s book written with Dr. Scott Earle, Idaho’s Mountain Wildflowers, and mountain wildflower brochures for Idaho and Washington, are available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Jane+E.+Lundin&i=stripbooks&ref=nb_sb_noss.
