Recapture that Womble spirit on Saturday!

The Wombles bench will be unveiled at 11 am

8 July 2022

Dons supporters are combining to unveil a lasting legacy to the Wombles!

The highlight of ‘Wombles Day’ tomorrow will be the big reveal of a wood-carved Wombles sculpture called the Orinoco Womble Bench outside our stadium at Plough Lane.

The bench will be unveiled at 11 am, followed by a sculpture of Dave Beasant and Roy Law at 11.30. At 12 noon there will be a community litter pick and recycling initiative – recapturing that famous Womble spirit!

The Wombles animation, based on a novel by the late Elisabeth Beresford, gained national popularity when it was broadcast on TV during the 1970s. It was based on members of her family, represented by their alter-egos of Orinoco, Bungo, and Aldernay. Members of the Beresford family will be joining us to unveil the sculpture.

Organisers WiSH (Wimbledon in Sporting History), with the help of Dons Local Action Group, arranged the community litter pick and recycling initiative – recapturing that famous Womble spirit! Both of the sculptures are made from fallen and replanted oak, fitting in with the importance of sustainability.

“Wombles Day” at the stadium includes the following:

  • Live music and the launch of the Wombles from the Lane CD
  • Stadium Tours including access to the Greatest Story exhibition
  • ‘Meet the Wombles’ – Uncle Bulgaria, Madame Cholet and Haydon the Womble
  • Special commemorative T-shirts presented to children
  • Prizes, raffles, games and giveaways
  • Food stalls and drinks

We wish to thank Galliard Homes, WiSH (Wimbledon in Sporting Heritage), Dons Local Action Group and our other partners for all of their hard work, and for funding the project.
