Bowls club fights to save green from proposed netball courts

A plan to build netball courts on a beloved lawn bowls green has upset locals, with East Ivanhoe Bowls Club president Matt Perkins saying his club members are furious about the proposal.

But a Banyule Council spokesperson said they are "yet to make a decision" as the draft consultation doesn't close until mid-July.

"The draft Ivanhoe Sports Precinct Plan identifies the current and future needs of clubs and the community and opportunities for redevelopment and development to meet their needs," the spokesperson said.

"Included in the draft plan is a proposed consolidated bowls facility at John Street in Ivanhoe, with bowling greens and an updated pavilion and clubhouse.

"Council will make a decision regarding the draft Ivanhoe Sports Precinct Plan following consultation findings, with evidence of future needs driving Council’s planning to ensure community and sporting clubs benefit from the redevelopment."
