Venue: The Hangar (Situated on campus at Rhodes University in the lane behind the Media Matrix Building)
Established in 2009, Rhodes University Shotokan is the only karate dojo on Campus at Rhodes University. Training is open to all Rhodes staff members and students, irrespective of style. Graded Rhodes Karateka may also attend additional classes at ECSR’s Hill Street Dojo.

Lutho Singata is currently in his third year at Rhodes University, and is one of instructors at the Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Club. He was elected as Club President in 2017 and again in 2018. Lutho’s early karate training was overseen by well-known Grahamstown karateka, Zwelakhe (Elvis) Sinam at the Makana Karate Academy. Later on he joined East Cape Shotokan-Ryu where he continues to be trained by Sinam, Gary Grapentin and Maureen De Jager.
In 2017 Lutho won the Trophy for the Best Senior Male Karateka at the SASKA National Championships. In addition to this achievement, he also became the first Rhodes Karateka to win the prestigious Male Senior Black Belt Kumite (fighting) Category at the 2017 SECKO Karate Championships at the Fish River Sun Hotel. Lutho will also be attending the 2018 WUKF World Championship in Dundee, Scotland in July.
In his spare time, Lutho is also a keen photographer.
