Such a fulfilling day returning to my alma mater, the University of Bristol! Had the pleasure of catching up with my esteemed professor and mentor, Professor Fabrizio Scarpa to dive into exciting discussions about business and research directions. Huge thanks to John for inviting us to an incredible lunch, and it was fantastic to be joined by Jonathan and Max for stimulating discussions on the future of alumni contributions towards university goals! Engaging with Peter on industry and alumni relationships was enlightening, and offering advice to current students was truly rewarding. Thrilled to meet the talented UoB intern team working on the SpaceNXT Labs project and glad to be mentoring such an impressive team. Durham Spaceflight had a great visit to the National Student Space Conference organised by UKSEDS - UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space. It was an amazing opportunity for us to meet other student societies like Project Sunride, LURA - Leeds University Rocketry Association, StrathSEDS, BristolSEDS : Space Exploration Society, CranSEDS and network with industry professionals. We found it particularly interesting learning about the latest space technology, such as Space Forge’s semiconductor manufacturing in orbit, as well as new space opportunities from the Deputy CEO of the UK Space Agency Chris White-Horne, and the research on electrical processes in the atmosphere from Karen Aplin. The highlight for us was a presentation by Daniel Tani, who was an astronaut on the International Space Station for 120 days. Hearing his story from model rocketry to his dream coming true when he was selected for astronaut training, was both heartwarming and incredibly inspiring to us all. We would like to thank the president of the UKSEDS Holly Whitehouse for organising the conference, and our sponsors without whom the operations of the society would not be possible: Kratos Defense and Security Solutions, Tracerco, VIPER RF, and Durham University Department of Engineering, Durham University Computer Science, and Durham University Department of Physics.

In case you missed it, last week we had the honour of being the host branch for UKSEDS - UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space's #NSSC24! Over two packed days of excitement, we had over 540 people in attendance, including 50+ speakers and 30+ exhibitors. Some of our amazing speakers included former astronaut Daniel Tani and the UK Space Agency Deputy CEO Chris White-Horne. We are also treated to a rocket recovery workshop by one of our members, Alex Walsh alongside Stuart Livings from Wizard Rockets Ltd. On the second day, we were spoilt to a keynote talk from the University of Bristol and University of Bristol Engineering’s Professor Karen Aplin titled “Sparks in Space”. Thank you so much to everyone for coming and to all of the UKSEDS and BristolSEDS volunteers who made it happen... we are already looking forward to #NSSC25!

Reflecting a week on from an incredible weekend at the National Student Space Conference! Thank you to Jacob Geer for kicking off the weekend, talking on the values and plans of the UK Space Agency, setting us up for a truly inspirational weekend. Next we made it to Meaghan Munro from Airbus Defence and Space on Propulsion System Design. This was an excellent talk, matching our enthusiasm for the space industry! We loved how this followed the development stages of space technologies and covered the whole life cycle. Dan Tani's talk, drawing from his experiences on the International Space Station, was particularly inspiring. His acknowledgment of the incredible female leaders he has worked with underscored the strength of diverse workforces in space missions. The Rocketry Recovery Systems workshop run by our very own Alex Walsh and Stuart from Wizard Rocketry. This gave attendees a great insight into recovery methods, and modelling in OpenRocket. We also enjoyed the UK Race to Space Panel Session chaired by Dr. Adam M. Baker. Nickie Finnegan shed light on the values that Skyrora Ltd hold, and the work that they are doing to make flight from SaxaVord Spaceport UK. Ranji Gogoi knowledge from the Civil Aviation Authority set out the requirements of the industry to meet the authority's requirements. Work from Jeremy Howitt and Martin Heywood from SNOWDONIA AEROSPACE LLP and Newton Launch Systems Ltd explained how the industry is gearing itself up to overcome challenges, evidence their engineering capability, and find the true gap in the market. We started Sunday with University of Bristol's very own Karen Aplin, disucssing her fascinating research into weather on other planets. Reminding us that we are lucky to go to a univeristy with such cool research endeavours! Next we were with David Sulley Sully from the UKSA on Space Domain Awareness, giving a better understanding on the tracking and concerns of space debris. We were also interested to hear the discussion on how this will be managed as we head into the new space age and look toward a an increase in the satellite and data industries David Parker from European Space Agency - ESA gave a great talk on the progression of space exploration, including a dive into the past and the expectation in previous decades of the future we are living. The panel discussion on Space Clusters hosted by Joaquin Perez-Grande from the Satellite Applications Catapult with speakers Rebecca Huffee and Louise Butt was a great introduction to the value and interconnectivity provided by the Space Clusters! We would have loved to have made it to every talk and panel as we had an incredible time. We are very grateful to those at UKSEDS - UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space and University of Bristol who worked so hard to curate the weekend. The Project Sunride team just had a fantastic weekend at #NSSC24! Our students had the opportunity to network with various companies in the UK space industry, and to attend workshops and lectures about career development, rocket recovery, and more. Everyone enjoyed a talk by NASA astronaut Daniel Tani - it was very inspirational and quite entertaining as he described his journey into space. Some members who attended the social on Saturday were lucky enough to join him for a team photo! Over the last three days I had a great time volunteering at the 2024 National Student Space Conference hosted by BristolSEDS : Space Exploration Society. Over the course of the event I supported the speaker and attendees by helping with setting up facilities, co-ordinating delays along side the rest of the other wonderful volunteers, assisting attendees and helping with the clean-up. In between my responsibilities I also had time to engage with the range of workshops, talks and stands available at the event, the highlights of which included meeting the inspirational Daniel Tani -former NASA astronaut, gaining some insight some great industry and technical insight from a rocketry discussion with Nick Appleyard, as well as receiving valuable career advice from both Meaghan Munro and Sam R. and listening to David Parker's talk on "ESA's Exploration programme" not to mention all the other inspiring talks and stands across the weekend. I noticed an emphasis through out the weekend's talks about the importance of the space industry on everyday life and how it is evolving which has left me feeling enthusiastic about a future career in the sector. Today I had the privilege of presenting our rover design with my teammates to attendees at this year's National Student Space Conference held in Bristol. We showcased our chassis, solar panel deployer, wheel designs and more. These will go into our mars rover to take part in the inter-university UKSEDS competition held at Airbus in July.
