St Enda’s fightback seals final place

Under 15 A Football Championship

Con Magees 4-11 St Enda’s 5-11

St Enda’s staged a brilliant comeback in Thursday evening’s Under 15A Football Championship semi-final against Con Magees Glenravel at Fr Maginn Park, coming from ten points down at one stage in the first half to win in the end by a goal.

In a tremendous game of football, which produced nine goals and twenty two points, Glenravel were flying it in the opening half and twenty six minutes in they led by 3-8 to 1-4. However St Enda’s finished the first half with a flurry with 2-2, to just a single point from the home team and were just a goal behind at the change of ends.

The second half was all St Enda’s and they added three more goals, plus six points to go eleven clear with time almost up, a turnaround of 21 points, and while their hosts produced a finishing spurt which brought them a goal and two points, they came up just short.

Glenravel hit the first five points of the game as they dominated throughout the field with Oisin McKeown, Dairi Higgins, Thomas McLaughlin, Harry Fyfe and Higgins again all firing over. Donal Magee got St Enda’s on the board with a point and Declan Murray added another but further points from Dairi Higgins and Thomas McLaughlin, plus a goal from the same player had them 1-8 to 0-2 in front after thirteen minutes.

A goal from St Enda’s brilliant left half forward Cathair McKenna on 20 minutes was quickly followed by points from Michael McKenna, but Glenravel hit back with two quick goals from Colla Ward and Dairi Higgins to lead by 10 on 26 minutes, but a late barrage which brought goals from Christopher Roberts and Padraig O’Hare cut the gap back to just three at the half time whistle.

Glenravel will wonder how they lost their way so badly in the second half, but after scoring so freely in the first they went 28 minutes without a score. St Enda’s were really on fire and tadded further goals from the elusive Cathair McKenna (2) and Padriag O’Hare put them in charge. They surged on to lead by eight with just minutes remaining, and though the home team finished with a Colla Ward goal and points from Dairi Higgins and Oisin McKeown, St Enda’s had already booked their place in the final against St Brigid’s
