This Girl Can

This Girl Can has been a national campaign that Sheffield Students’ Union has been taking part in for a few years now. Amazing work done by previous Sports Officers such as Flo and Sarah has meant that opportunities for women in sport at Sheffield has grown and developed. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to further empower women to get involved in Sport and an active lifestyle. Following on from an incredible year of sport for women, with the football and netball world cup being so successful this summer there has never been a better time to truly demonstrate that women in sport should not be forgotten about. It is evident that female sport is still overshadowed by mainstream male sports, and that we are still a long way away from equality in sport. The aim of this campaign is to discuss the different barriers that women face with involvement and stigma and how as a student movement we can contribute to breaking those barriers. Also to offer confidence building sessions for women in all areas from free weight lifting to trying a new sport as part of a diverse female only give it a go programme.
