It was a busy weekend for the Edinburgh University Archery Club. Saturday took off with the Whitburn Archers 2.4k Challenge in Sunderland, where EUAC rounded up a wealth of medals. On Sunday, at the Beiter Hit-Miss Tournament in Norwich, Guy Matzkin and his teammate Rebecca Blewett won silver at the Second Flight.
Zoë Horseman from the Edinburgh University Weightlifting Club placed 1st at the British U23 Weightlifting Championships. The race for gold was a hard fought battle between Zoë and two other talented female weightlifters.
This past weekend Edinburgh University Surfing Club were down in Newquay competing in the BUCS 2016 events. The boys managed to get through to the second round whilst Lucy Mead progressed to the quarter finals.
Edinburgh University Ultimate Frisbee got off to a winning start to the season against Stirling. A great 15-1 win saw Ben Wilson named man of the match, topping the stats in both offence and defence. Preparations are now underway for Edinburgh University Ultimate, as in a month’s time they will face the tough opposition of Glasgow University.
Wednesday saw a big match for the Women’s Lacrosse Club’s first team. Edinburgh had a tough defence, however it was not enough to stop Durham’s continual attacking pressure which saw them prevail 10-2. The 3s played Aberdeen 1s away. Edinburgh’s defence put up a great fight against Aberdeen’s settled attack. Even with EUWLC’s smooth transitioning of the ball up the pitch, the 3s couldn’t quite find the win, succumbing 25-5.
Saturday, 15 October saw the normal chaos of Saturday mornings return for Edinburgh University Netball Club, with five BUCS matches played. The day was kicked off by Edinburgh University Netball Club 3s who won 38-33 against Stirling 1s in a highly competitive match. The 5s fell victim to an extremely unlucky 30-29 loss away against Aberdeen 2s in their first game of the season. In the second home match of the day, EUNC 4s took on Dundee 2s. It was a tight game until the very end but Edinburgh fought hard to take the win 53-49. The 2s had a very strong start to the season on Saturday against Heriot-Watt by holding their own in every area of the court, running out comfortable 59-24 runners. Finally, EUNC 1s took on Strathclyde 1s in their first BUCS match of the season. After going four years unbeaten in Scottish 1A, EUNC 1s are looking to maintain their performance this year and after a tough match EUNC 1s’ campaign is off to a winning 53-39 start.
Edinburgh University Men’s Hockey Club 1’s continued their 100 per cent record in the BUCS Premier League B, North Conference, with a hard fought 1-0 win over Newcastle. The fixture between Edinburgh University 4s and Edinburgh University 3s created a tense and exciting game. Robbing the 4s of what would have been a memorable win, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Finally, the 5s opened their BUCS campaign with a solid 4-0 victory over Aberdeen 3s.
It was another extremely close match for the Edinburgh University Men’s Basketball 1s this week, having won by just four points, 58-54. Women’s 1s had a tough game against Northumbria. There were moments of good basketball for the 1s but they just couldn’t find the win, falling 78-40. There was brighter news for the Men and Women’s 2s. The Men’s 2s recorded a 68-38 victory against a strong St Andrews side and remain first in the Scottish 1A League. The Women’s 2s, having scooped a win against Aberdeen University 51-36, are also placed first in their Scottish 1A League.
Edinburgh University Women’s Football Club 2’s faced the tough opposition of St Andrews 1s on Wednesday. The 2s battled hard for each other until the final whistle but lost 5-0 to highly determined opposition. EUWFC 1s faced Stirling 1s under the stadium lights of Peffermill. The game started off with both teams threatening, with neither breaking the deadlock. The final whistle saw a 2-0 win for the 1s as they continue to defend their Scottish 1A League title.
