In the past week, the Edinburgh University Kickboxing Club (EUKBC) had the most successful National University Kickboxing Championships ever. 15 competitors travelled to the University of Leeds to compete against over 150 participants from 15 universities. Six EUKBC fighters progressed into the finals.
In the Beginners Lightweight Category, it came down to an all-Edinburgh final between Melanie Ovens and Anne-Charlotte Douard, with Ovens just scraping the title. Rex Winslow achieved first place for Edinburgh in the Beginners Middleweight Category. Seher Ackrim also won first place, in the Intermediate Lightweight Category, for the first time, and finally, first place in the Advanced Middleweight Category also went to Edinburgh as EUKBC president Michaela Sophie retained her title in convincing fashion.
The Edinburgh University Badminton Club 4s were back in action recently and drew 6-6 in a thriller against the University of Aberdeen’s 2s. It was a close-fought match with many of the games going all the way to three sets.
Edinburgh University Archery Club members Hope Greenwood and Sarah Prieels both competed in the European Indoor Archery Championships.
Prieels won silver whilst also coming away with the distinction of being the first in the ‘Ladies Compound’ category to shoot a score of 300/300.
Edinburgh University Boating Club attended the Women’s Head of River on the Tideway in London. This year was the largest ever event with over 300 boats competing. With the women’s 1s eight’s original goal being to place in the top 10, they did extremely well by playing 8th overall and coming 4th out of the university crews. The women’s 2s eight placed an excellent 38th. This is the highest that the second eight has ever finished at the competition. The novice eight placed 112th, finishing 4th in the University Academic category.
Edinburgh University Ultimate Frisbee Club women’s team headed over to St Andrews for the Women’s Outdoor Regionals. Having won the tournament last year, Edinburgh went in as the first seed. It had a very successful outcome as they only conceded seven points throughout the whole day, and achieved a stunning 13-0 win in the final against the University of Aberdeen. They now set their sights on Division One Nationals next month.
Edinburgh University Trampolining Club (EUTC) attended their last Scottish league competition of the year recently. The club are on record as stating they are proud of everyone who competed in Stirling and throughout the year. It proved to be quite the haul for the club with Eilidh Grant grabbing 2nd in the Elite ladies, while Jasmine Feingold went one better to claim 1st in the Intervanced ladies. Elsewhere Matt Angelides secured 2nd in the Advanced men category, while Angelides also won the Advanced men’s shield. Julian Douglas, meanwhile, finished up in a creditable 3rd in the Elite men’s standings.
Not to be denied, Andrew Huston secured an impressive 2nd in the Intermediate mens, as Amanda Kass came 1st and Guusje Ubachs 3rd in level one tumbling respectively. These outstanding results were enough to hand EUTC second place in the overall standings. Despite this achievement, they were unable to retain the League Cup for a third successive year, as the University of Stirling Trampoline and Gymnastics club just pipped them to the crown.
