Updated Athletic Information

To all Saint Francis Student-Athletes and Families,

I am writing to offer the latest developments with our sports programs here at Saint Francis High School.  As a father of two high school student-athletes myself, I know the past eleven months have been challenging for all of us. Thank you all for your patience and support as we continue to work hard with our league, section, county and state offices to resume athletic activities this school year.

With the lifting of the regional stay at home order this past week, the question for all of us is:  What does this mean for my sport potentially having a season this school year?  As we referenced on December 18, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) shared a general outline (CIF Proposed Plan) along with sport specific directions (CIF Proposed Guidelines by Sport) for the return of athletics tied to the colored tier our county is in at any given time.

The three sports leagues in which Saint Francis Athletics participates are working on or have published a return-to-play plan for all our sports.  (see links below)

  • WBAL (girls lacrosse) Document not released yet
  • SCVAL (gymnastics and field hockey)
  • WCAL (cross country, football, water polo, volleyball, golf, tennis, swimming and diving, track and field, baseball, softball, soccer, boys lacrosse, basketball and wrestling)

These documents include the most up-to-date information on:

  1. Start dates for official practices and competitions. (note: actual schedules are coming soon)
  2. Dates by which we would "cancel" a season based on tier projections from the county at that time. The purpose in setting cancellation dates is to allow student-athletes to join another sport in the event that their season is unlikely to take place.

The majority of our communication moving forward will be from sport specific coaches (coaching roster) to our student-athletes regarding tryout and practice start dates.

Saint Francis Athletics has developed the following plan which details our return-to-play protocols.

Please note that the CDPH has put in place the restriction that student-athletes can ONLY participate in one stable cohort/team at a time inside or outside of school. For example, a student-athlete cannot participate in a club volleyball cohort at the same time they are participating in a Saint Francis cohort. This is a change from what our expectation was at the start of the school year.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding this restriction, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Teams that are not "in season" can continue athletic conditioning and training sessions, as we have done all year.

We know these times have been very challenging and trying on all of us.  We are hopeful that these plans will give some clarity for the rest of the school year.  As we all know, county and state guidelines continue to change and we will be here to update you with all the latest information as it relates to Saint Francis Athletics.  We are committed to trying to get as many student-athletes participating this school year as we can in the safest manner possible.

Please continue to follow any other updates on our webpage and our social media handles on Twitter and Instagram.

Thank you and GO Lancers!
