The long-anticipated Canada Games is over, and it was quite the experience for the Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club’s three local skiers: Marlie Molinaro, Maeve MacLeod, Ruby Serrouya and Alexandra Luxmoore. They were selected from over 70 eligible female skiers in British Columbia. Ruby, Maeve and Alexandra are grade 12 classmates at Revelstoke Secondary, and Marlie is in her second year at the University of Calgary.
The local ski racers qualified for the Canada Games back in early January at the BC Cup #1 in Whistler.
The Canada Games took place from February 18, 2023, to March 5, 2023. Revelstoke Nordic skiers competed in the second week of events. The 2023 Canada Games Each event had over 60 skiers participating from across Canada, with all races held at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park at Brookvale, PEI.
Canada Games cross-country skiing events were for skiers 19 years old and younger. Revelstoke athlete, Ruby Serrouya, not only qualified against much older skiers but also raced well each day at Canada Games in a field of skiers that were most often two to three years older than her. Additionally, Maeve MacLeod battled sickness while posting some impressive results until she was too sick to compete. Maeve is starting to feel better and has rejoined her teammates as they prepare for the National Championships next week in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
It has been a gruelly but inspirational week of racing at the Canada Winter Games, with Revelstoke local skiers loving the conditions, terrain and social aspects of the games, but they faced more than the normal challenges of ski racing, notably arriving on a red-eye flight and then dealing with a four-hour time zone change. Once the team got settled, they worked hard to achieve some fantastic results. The highlight was the relay result, where British Columbia won gold after a fast-paced 20-kilometre race where the top three podium places were hotly contested right down to the finish line.
