Wolfshead Field Archers th 11 June 2017 Wolfshead Field Archers welcomed 58 archers to what was our first summer shoot for several years. Thank you all for coming. Hopefully you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you again. The weather was mostly good but it wouldn't have been a proper Wolfshead shoot if there hadn't been a shower during the raffle and award of medals at the end of the day. Many favourable comments were received on the steps and bridges that have been built to improve accessibility around the course. Thanks to all those who put in the effort to get things completed in time for the shoot. Further course developments, along with new 3D rd targets will be in place for our shoot on 3 September. Thanks also to the kitchen staff who were kept busy all day providing hot drinks and snacks, and to the course marshals. Is there any chance you could print a list of clubs who do/don't allow crossbows as I always seem to be emailing clubs before I can book only to find that they don't allow crossbows. If there was a definitive list it would make XB archers' shooting so much easier. Margaret Rickard Hello all clubs & shoot organisers! In response to this letter, would you like to let us know for you to let us know if your clubs do/do not allow crossbows? I shall begin including this information if/when it comes in on the Events Calendar and/or begin compiling a list if enough information comes in. Thanks for reading! 55

NEW FEATURE: \"ARCHERY ON THE BIG SCREEN\" Throughout the decades, Hollywood has had more than just a passing interest in archery. The studios have churned out hundreds of films (some good and some quite forgettable) featuring bows and arrows in some form or other. In the future issues of FAN UK we will be reminding you of some of these, while also dredging up some you will have definitely never heard of! \"ARCHERY ON THE BIG SCREEN\" No. 6 \"RAMBO II - FIRST BLOOD\" (USA, 1985) It’s comic book stuff on the big screen! Stallone doing what he does best – taking on all of the bad guys and winning through in the end in his usual fashion. The plot is very predictable – Rambo is sent on a secret mission to release POWs out of Vietnam and encounters the usual mayhem. He faces a brutal Vietnamese officer who is aided and abetted by a renegade Russian colonel. Lots of explosions and action but Rambo, amazingly, is somehow indestructible! This time, in addition to usual array of portable guns of various sizes, he charges about with his trusty compound bow dispatching anyone he sees as a threat. All good fun! Black Arrow FAC Sunday 11th June 2017 ~ Report by Cherrie Peabody & Photographs by Ru Lochlea ~ After a very wet week we managed to get everything ready for our open shoot. There were a few boggy areas around the wood but generally the ground had stood up well to the weather. Sadly we had several cancellations in the morning and 6 didn't turn up or even send a message afterwards! Anyway - on to the positives, we welcomed 89 archers who all arrived in good spirits. We started the day with the customary bacon or sausage butty and a cuppa and after some juggling with the groups we got everyone on their pegs for 10.30 am. It was a 40 target course - shoot through with 2 catering stops. On the menu were hot dogs, chilli, etc. along with a lovely variety of homemade cakes. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we heard plenty of laughter around the wood. We had some challenging shots which everyone tackled with optimism and the comments we were hearing were very favourable. The raffle prizes included some of Mike's 'magic mushrooms' (targets!) … they were a sought after prize. A big thank you to all who came along, thank you for all your comments and thank you to all our members for their hard work to enable the event to take place. FAN UK invites you to meet Purbeck Archers! My name is Kenn Duffield and I am Promotions officer for Purbeck Archers (PA). Purbeck Archers have stepped in to replace the Belvedere Bowmen’s field shoot that was scheduled for the 15th October 2017. Purbeck Archers are a small to middling club with about 50 members but with a very keen crowd of field archers. We enjoy promoting all types of archery putting on have-a-go days all round Dorset. As is always the case we have a hard-core of members that do most of the work, it’s a good job we enjoy it so much. As this is our first ever field shoot we are keen to let the field archers out there know that Purbeck Archers have taken over in place of Belvedere Bowmen who recently folded due to a number of common factors that affect all clubs. Having shot many comps between us throughout the SW, including the South West Challenge and the 3D Nationals, we hope that we have garnered a bit knowledge that will allow us to put on a great shoot. We are very keen to provide a good replacement for the Belvedere shoot and part of that is getting all of you regular archers to us on the day. Fill in the application form (on page 61) and get it back to us. We would love to have you. Picture 2: Shooting Ground 64

Regent Archers Sunday 23rd July 2017 Report by Dave Framingham. Sunday turned out to be a surprise as far as the weather went as rain was forecast from noon. It rained heavily just a few miles away but not on the good people at our shoot! The course was split into two loops which gave archers the chance to pass catering at least once. Many thanks to the catering team for their hard work (the sausages were delicious!). We had a turn out of 77 archers and going by the comments they had a great days shooting. It makes all the hard work we have done in our woods worthwhile. I would like to thank all those who made comments and suggestions about the course. We welcome the feedback so we know what to work on for next time. It was good to welcome some new faces to the shoot and hope to see you all again in January 2018. These bucklers enabled the archer to see the enemy and were light and simple to manoeuvre in combat. They could also be used as a weapon in their own right. A man with a buckler and sword, as our archer has, is a very effective fighting machine once his arrows have been shot. Quite a large lump is left to enable this to be carved and is quite a challenge. The circular shape is drawn on and roughed out. 70

As with all carving, carving the outer is reasonably simple, it is the undercarving involving standing on your head, working upside down, making tools to fit and hanging from the eyelashes that is the hard part. Draig Goch Field Archers Welsh National Champs 8th-9th July 2017 We had a 'moderate' turnout of 120 archers for the 2017 Welsh Champs held at our woods in Rhuallt, North Wales. We persisted with last year's format of 40 targets laid out each day, (38 x 3Ds plus 2 x 2Ds) with the figure of 8 course laid out as all walk backs which enabled us to reverse the direction of the course on the Sunday (and change a few targets, peg positions etc). This year the weather gods favoured us on both days, perfect conditions for shooting what proved to be a challenging but fair Championship course. Our catering staff provided burgers, sandwiches and a selection of cake along with hot and ice-cold drinks. We would like to thank Liz, Sheri and Amanda for all their hard work over the two days. Thanks also to the course layers, who set another testing course over 30 acres and 5.6 km peg to peg. Thanks also to our marshalls who seemed to retrieve a steady stream of arrows throughout the two days and who produced the final results in super fast time! Finally thanks to all those who attended what will probably be our last two-day shoot. By Dave Wilson. Greetings again one and all! A very special welcome to this edition’s very DIFFERENT collection of Robin Hoods and Maid Marians who have now joined other distinguished folk in our FAN UK Hall of Fame, but these folk have something rather special to add!! They say that “lightning never strikes twice in the same place” HOWEVER … here is evidence that it does indeed strike twice and - in the future - perhaps even thrice!! :-) If the concept of “Hoods & Maids” is unfamiliar to you, they are my unique way of celebrating stunning shots (both jammy and pure skill) that only Robin Hood or Maid Marian themselves would’ve been able to pull off. It is also my way of celebrating the shots we all either dream of hitting or are so lucky that they need scoring before they fall out of the target! We all, regardless of age/ability, appear to rack up a couple of these shots so it was also my way of trying to include more people and show off their shots and give them a mention as stars – albeit having stood in a healthy blob of jam or simply from being rather a fine shot. This edition, we welcome these rather special new inductees ... 1. VIV GUTHRIE, nominated by Ray Kay: “I would like to nominate Viv Guthrie of Delamere F.A. for a Maid Marion award after this shot this morning at our twice weekly “Old Farts Challenge”. How the arrow stayed in the target I will never know as there were four others which rattled the target after her shot.” Now, “Lady Viv of Owl Jam” is no ordinary Maid … she can seemingly replicate her astonishing shots at will as the following images indeed confirm!! ;-) Kudos! 84

2. TONY BOONE, also nominated by Ray Kay: “I don’t want to be greedy but the ‘Old Farts’ seem to be getting the hang of this Hoods and Maids Award. Could I please nominate our Club Captain, Tony Boone, for the attached shot achieved at this morning’s ‘Old Farts Challenge’?” Greetings again one and all! A very special welcome to this edition’s very DIFFERENT Arise, “Lord Tony of Back Scratching”!! No ordinary If the concept of “Hoods & Maids” is unfamiliar to you, they are my unique way Hood yet of celebrating stunning shots (both jammy and pure skill) that only Robin Hood or one we Maid Marian themselves would’ve been able to pull off. It is also my way of celebrating salute!! ;-) the shots we all either dream of hitting or are so lucky that they need scoring before they fall out of the target! We all, regardless of age/ability, appear to rack up a couple of these shots so it was also my way of trying to include more people and albeit having stood in a healthy 3. CHRIS RUMMERY, 3rd nominee of Ray Kay: “I would like to nominate another of the ‘Old Farts’ following last weeks challenges. My shooting partner Chris Rummery managed two shots both worthy of the title whereas I still can't find the right level of \"jam\". On the first shot at the wolf Chris was heading for a lost arrow when a pine tree intervened throwing the arrow into the animal's ear for a 16! On the second shot there was the familiar sound of arrow on wood. As we approached the target - another jammy shot with the arrow having perforated the hessian of the deer's leg before embedding itself in the support for another 16!” Welcome to the fold “Sir Rummery the is no ordinary Maid … she can seemingly replicate her Double-Jammy”!! We bow down to your superior skills! 4. RON PICKERING of Pines Park Archers, nominated by Hels @ FAN UK: “I am nominating Ron for this truly unusual and spectacular shot. It is one thing to ’scab a jammy’ in this day & age but to have the skill and magic within in you that allows you to ‘talk to the animals’, moreover to catch your arrows, but so much so that they can do so with their mouths! You are a legend good sir, with also an award named after you for other arrow skill!!” ;-) Finally, we welcome Sir Ron of Pickering - the 3D whisperer and all round inspiration to us all!!!! ;-) 85

Overton Black Arrows: Annual open field shoot (By Steve, Treasurer.) Hidden in a fold in the Hampshire hills, above the village of Kingsclere and next to the famous Watership Down, \"Overton Black Arrows\" hosted their annual Open Field Archery competition, this year combined with both the Hampshire and English Field Archery Championships. The course was split between two areas … \"The Warren\" - a deep bowl in the side of White Hill which held 16 targets, all shot up, down or across the steep inclines. Perhaps the trickiest shot was 60m downhill at an angle of 45 degrees. Another eight targets were placed in the adjacent woods; made tricky by the low light and deceptive slopes. The courses set here are widely recognised to be amongst the most challenging field courses in the country. The location is incredibly picturesque - although close to a village, there are no facilities, with the valley providing camping for participants. The Black Arrows ran a catering tent in conjunction with a local Scouts group providing hot food, drinks, cakes, fruit & even complimentary ice lollies during the blisteringly hot Saturday afternoon. 88

Overton Black Arrows: Seventy-four archers attended the event with many bow styles: American flatbow, Barebow, Compound, Compound Barebow, Longbow, Recurve and Traditional were all represented. The archers’ ages ranged from under fifteen to over seventy-seven and some of the British Field team attended to help prepare for the European competitions later in the year. The joy of field archery is tackling a new course with a group of archers often shooting very different styles - there are so many ways to approach estimating distances, sighting and shooting that it is impossible to leave without gaining valuable tips from fellow archers. Club President Peter Turner and Lady Paramount and club secretary Jo Bevis presented the medals (results below) with a special mention to Phoebe Rose (U15 Barebow) who achieved a new national record of 570. Shoot Reports & Clubs’ Location Directory In response to feedback from one of our readers, who asked if it was possible to let readers know roughly where the clubs featured in the shoot reports are, we have decided to add this feature. The reader said that as the photos and shots in the reports look interesting, it’s frustrating thinking “I’d love to go there” and not actually knowing how close (or not) they are. FAN UK agreed! So - here is a list of the clubs featured in all previous editions of the magazine thus far, as well as the clubs advertising their forthcoming shoots and those who have already asked for their information to be shared, with their general locations for your perusal. Thanks again to Mike Schofield for this terrific suggestion! :-) I have also included the locations of the clubs shown in the wonderful photographs throughout the magazine.
