PLYMOUTH College fencer Ben Andrews continued his fine form by winning a title at the British Fencing National Championships.

Andrews, who has just moved up into the under-20 age category, claimed gold in Nottingham after a remarkable run of results in the poule rounds the direct elimination fights.

The 17-year-old won all of his six poule fights in the junior men’s epee competition to be seeded joint second and gaining a bye before going into the direct elimination rounds in the table of 64.

He then won 15-8, 15-10, 15-8 to reach the final against Great Britain team-mate Josh Willcox, of Knightsbridge Fencing Club.

In a nail-biting final, Andrews recovered from five points down to take a 15-9 victory.

That success followed on from winning individual and team silver medals at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship in July.

He is now embarking on his first of three years in the under-20 category. To start that with a British title could be a key moment in his career.
