Ahead of the 24 Hour Jukebox for Teenage Cancer Trust starting on Absolute Radio this morning, ever-genial Manic Street Preachers legend Nicky Wire caught up with Bush & Richie for a quick pep talk last night.

Manic Street Preachers will be performing three live songs – ‘Orwellian’ and ‘Complicated Illusions’ from Number 1 album ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ and timeless classic ‘A Design For Life’ – bright and early tomorrow morning (1st October) as Bush & Richie’s marathon show heads towards its finale.

Nicky told Bush & Richie it’s a “pleasure” to be taking part, saying: “We've got to studio ourselves so it’s always good to use it.

“It's been a frantic couple of weeks to be honest, we're sort of getting back into the groove, releasing records, touring, doing stuff, so it feels quite old fashioned.”

Asked by Richie if he has any culinary or snack tips for the show, Nicky imparted some sage crisp butty advice.

“When it comes to cooking, we are talking crisp sandwiches with me. I am the worst unreconstructed cook in the world,” Nicky said.

“The ideal (crisp butty) is to get a crusty roll, hollow out the crusty roll, shove the crisps in and then crush it... and it’s magic!”

Bush then joked: “If I see Richie making holes in big lumps of bread at the halfway stage of the Jukebox, we’ve got problems!”

Asked what’s the longest Manic Street Preachers have spent in each others’ company in one go, Nicky said: “We've done about 18 hours on a bus together, 18/20 hours and then sleeping overnight and stuff. So, we’ve spent a lot of intimate time together! I'm sure you'll get through it.”

Nicky also agreed with Bush that it’s important to be comfortable in silence with each other, saying: “You’re a man after my own heart, because it's the key to so many things in life. The ability just to shut up. Let's not beat around (the bush) here.”

Commenting on the ‘A Design For Life’ performance, Nicky told Bush & Richie he hopes it gives them a boost.

“Yeah, we’re gonna slip in ‘A Design For Life’,” Nicky said. “I think because it just always gives us a bit of energy as much as everyone else, and you might need it! It’s sort of like a modern-day national anthem of Wales.”
