RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

The first day of the above old-estab-lished meeting was held in beautiful weather, the grounds being in splendid order end the attendance constituting about a record. Before the racing commenced the president of the club cautioned the jockeye as to their riding. The racing throughout the day was very interesting. Good fields in severaj of the events made speculation brisk. The starting of Mr Perriam was exceptionally good, and the officials carried out their duties well. The amount put through the machine was larger than last year's figures, being £1653 as against £1637. An unfortunate accident occurred in the Lowburn Handicap through Roundabout falling in the straight and bringing down Nikolski. The former had to be destroyed. WAIKOUAITI RACES. The annual meeting of the Waikouaiti Racing Club was held on the Domain, course on January 2. There w* a large attendance, imany people taking the opportunity of a run by train to this always popular and well-eonduoted meeting. ine local band was present, and played during the afternoon. The course was a trine soft, owing to the rain of the previous day, and at the bends was somewhat troublesome, though it must be remarked that +he state of th°, ground was not blamed forthe mishaps that occurred. The totahsator investments for the day totalled £3313, or an advance of £487 on the amount d«alt with last tear. Nine bookmakers phert their calling, at a fee of £lO 10s eacn. There were two spills during the day. Hawksbury Maid fell in the first race, and late in the afternoon Alto came down in.the Hawksbury Handicap, bringing Red Morn down also." An inquiry into the latter accident was held bv the stewards, but the evidence showed that no blame was attachable to anyone. Alto, it seems, crossed her legs and fell. Red Morn falling over her. Both Humphries (rider of Bolt from the Blue) and Barclay (rider of Red Morn* said that no blame could be imputed, to the rider of Alto. The stewards agreed that it was a,n accident, and no further action was taken. In anoher case a jockey was called before the stewards for alleged misconduct, but the evidence went m his favour. In the Welter Rae, rider of Vagranee, was fined £1 for breaking the tapes Owners and others have complained before today of the state of .the north bend, and yesterday's mishap is not the first that has occurred there. Fortunately, none of the riders who fell was severely injured, though Barclay got a few nasty bruises. After a false start, the quartet were despatched in a straggling manner, Rosette and Speculate losing about half a dozen lengths. Vagrance and Lady de Vere got away pretty well together, but after goingtwo" furlongs Vagrance took the lead, and maintained it to the end, winning by three lengths from Lady d© Vere, who just managed to get second place from Speculate, who came fast in the straight, by a length.
