Club History

Mid Northern Rugby Club

Mid Northern Rugby Club was founded in 1962 by the amalgamation of the Towai-Maromaku and the Hukerenui rugby clubs. In the early 1900’s there were separate Towai, Marumaku and Hukerenui clubs. Towai and Maromaku combined in 1957 when a strip of Bay of Islands territory was ceded to the Whangarei Union. The newly amalgamated Mid Northen club played in scarlet jersey and socks and were named The Scarlet Runners. Northern United won the 1965 championship title with an unbeaten record, took the 1968 title and won the 1970 title, again with an unbeaten record. Their success during the 1960’s and 1970’s is hardly surprising considering they had Ken, Brian and Sid Going and Joe Morgan, all All Blacks, plus many North Auckland representative players.
