Men's Lacrosse: Cadets sidelined in non-conference bout by early Panther run

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team endured their first defeat of the season, dropping a 17-7 decision to Plymouth State University in a non-conference showdown on Sabine Field on Wednesday evening.

Six different Cadets logged goals in the tilt, paced by a pair of scores from Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.).  Duncan Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.), Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.), Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.), Matthew Hannon (Milford, N.H.) and Christian Rainis (Wynantskill, N.Y.) all tallied a goal apiece to round out the effort.

The Panthers struck early and fast, ripping off six-straight goals to open up the first quarter, with half of them coming on man-up opportunities.  The Cadets found momentum to end the opening frame, as Fleury and Rainis drilled home Norwich's first points in less than 30 seconds of each other.

Facing a man-down opportunity, Mason McMahon (Norwich, Conn.) connected with Hannon just minutes into the second quarter to bring Norwich back within three, 6-3, but three-straight from Plymouth State neutralized the Cadet run.  A man-up goal from Seidel to close the half was answered by another six-goal spurt by the Panthers in the third stanza.

Norwich outscored Plymouth State, 3-2, in the fourth courtesy of goals from Johnston, Seidel, and Youngclaus, with Matt Meehan (Norfolk, Mass.) dishing out helpers on the final two tallies.

The Cadets finished 17-24 on clears, while scooping up 25 ground balls and winning 10 face offs.  Norwich capitalized on a pair of extra man chances, but could not overcome the stellar play of Owen McNichols between the pipes, who logged 10 saves in over 55 minutes of play for Plymouth State.  Thomas Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) tallied 17 saves himself for the Cadets.

Norwich will close the week with a Saturday, Mar. 2 duel against the United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m., before traveling for their annual spring break trip to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday, Mar. 6 for a 5:00 p.m. showdown.
