Northern Cocks is an LGBT+ social badminton club based in Manchester. We pride ourselves on being inclusive of all abilities and we have a wide range of skill levels at the club. We also focus on welcoming beginners and completely new players to the sport. There is no need to book onto a session, just turn up.

Northern Cocks LGBTQI+ Badminton Club Manchester isn’t just a gay mans club, we cater for the entire rainbow community and our allies. You may see LGBT+, LGBTQI+ or even LGBTQQIP2SAA on our branding, website, and social media. But whichever acronym you see, be assured that we welcome everyone! Tracey explains the origins of the Northern Cocks brand. Quote Tracey – I came up with the name Northern Cocks. Northern represents us as a proud northern club, and affiliates us with our fellow Northern LGBT+ sports clubs. Cocks as a noun is a term of endearment used by the people of Manchester and is conveniently also an abbreviation of shuttlecock! While the club had small beginnings back in 2013, it wasn’t until 2019 when be became established as an official club. Our roots were, and still are, focussed on creating a friendly, welcoming club to everyone across the LGBT+ community. We are proud to offer the friendliest badminton club in Manchester!
Timings and Location
We currently play at Moss Side Leisure Centre, Moss Lane East, Manchester M15 5NN. There is a secure underground car park which is free of charge.
Mondays 6-8pm
Saturdays 3-5pm
Extra session added, every Thursday from the 6th April 2023 at the National Cycling Centre, Stuart Street, Manchester, M11 4DQ. 6-8pm
Pricing + Membership
First session is free!
Come along to a session and try it out. The first session is free, and we have rackets to lend for your first few sessions, so you can try out some social badminton before any commitment.
After the first free session, pricing is as follows…
- Members – £3 per session
- Non-Members – £5 per session
- Membership – £20 per year
Membership also gets you priority when signing up for tournaments, some social events and any other activity which is limited in numbers.
Socials
Northern Cocks LGBT+ Badminton Club is primarily a social club. We organise regular and varied social activities off the badminton courts!
These include regular cinema and theatre trips, quizzes, sporting activities, board game nights and drinks in the village. We are certain that some of the social activities will be of interest to you, and we are always more than happy to take requests on future events!
Northern Cocks LGBT+ Badminton Club Ethos
Northern Cocks was created to provide a social and friendly LGBT+ badminton club for Manchester.
The club ethos at time of creation still stands, and along with providing a safe space for the LGBT+ people of Manchester to come and play badminton, we also stand for the following.
- Everybody is welcome, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation.
- Every member should be always treated with respect.
- There is no skill level requirement – the club is open to the full spectrum of skill level.
- Fun is always the priority.
- There is no pressure to compete. We are first and foremost a social club.
- Safety on court is more important than winning a point.
- Everyone takes turns in game rotation, ensuring a fair an equal participation level for all.
- If you notice players have been waiting longer than you for a game, invite them to go on court.
- Nobody should be made to feel inadequate – skill levels are often blended on court.
