[First off, check Google for Reviews on this business as Yelp will not post clearly all of the Reviews] At the Chosun Black Belt Academy we believe that our lessons go beyond the classroom. We are committed to students learning the tradition of Korean Tae Kwon Do, while at the same time helping them realize their own inner strength. Our mission is to help each of our students become better people by learning the importance of discipline and dedication. We know that these fundamental tenets are not only essential to martial arts, but also to being good community builders and citizens of the world. Martial arts directs us to the path to freedom from normal human limitations, and we look forward to helping you become better physically, mentally and spiritually.

This place has been a God send for my son, it has brought him so much confidence and new skills! The teachers are amazing and truly care about these kids.

I previously reviewed Chosun stating that often new, shy students will not be very encouraged by instructors to participate in their first classes. This left frustrated, sometimes crying parents with kids clinging to them and refusing to go out on the mats. Immediately after my review, that changed. The instructors now gently but persistently encourage new students into the mats to participate. They have also made it known that parents can sit to the side of the class on the mat if their child needs them close for the first class or two. Usually, the kids acclimate quickly and enjoy themselves. No more crying parents when previously there was at least one every few months.
My child enjoys Chosun and is growing in the areas of confidence, respect, and discipline, along with the other students in class, which is great to see.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thanks for taking a moment to leave us your perspective. We understand your point of view, however, handling situations when a child does not want to come on to the floor can be a little tricky. We would never force a child to participate if they don't want to, yet parents want their children to join so we try to encourage them, then even allow parents to come with them on the floor. This usually works, although it may take several classes for the child to feel brave enough to do it on their own. We have seen SO many success stories allowing this procedure to happen. At the same time, we need to balance how much time we spend trying to get a shy child on the floor without taking away teaching time and attention to the children already on the floor. Ultimately, it is up to the parents to determine whether our program is right for their child and how much to “push” to get the child to come out. We encourage every single student here to the best of our abilities, but we want everyone here to also have fun.
To clarify on the reviews so that it does not sound like a lack of integrity, although we LOVE positive reviews and ask folks to give us a review, we would never “buy” a review. The $80 uniform (or $50 credit) is a REFERRAL reward if a friend of a student signs up at our school. It’s our way of saying “Thank you” for someone spreading the word about what we do here. We do also ask for an opportunity to “fix things” if someone does not feel like they can give us a positive review. Since I’m not sure who you are, please get in contact with me directly and I’d be happy to speak with you about any issues you personally have encountered that we might help with.
Thanks again for your feedback, and hopefully, we can impress you even more in the future.
Best,
Master PSep 15, 2022Previous reviewMy child is in the Little Ninjas program at Chosun. Overall, the program has been okay. A few notes, though...
To anyone signing up through the Franklin Recreation Department's once-a-week classes for 6 weeks- The new kids are in the same class as students who have been studying taekwondo for a while. That's fine, kids learn quickly by watching other kids. But if your child is a little shy, it can be intimidating for them to step out on the mats and join the group. When we started, the instructor helped gently guide the new kids onto the mat and get them interested. Recently, there have been new kids who sit out the whole first class or two because the instructors don't do more than ask once or twice if they want to join the class. They seem content to take a strict approach and if the child doesn't show enthusiasm, they let them cling to their parent outside of the mat and not participate at all. It's really unfortunate because it's not a free class and the parents just want their kids to have fun. I see a parent break down and cry every couple months because their child won't participate and some instructors don't give much encouragement or assistance.
Continuing the program after the recreation department intro course, it's a 2-day-per-week commitment. (Side note: You'll get a free uniform when you sign up for the full classes.)
The Little Ninjas course teaches basic kicks, stances, punches, blocks, some taekwondo vocabulary, and respect. They "test" for a new colored stripe belt every 10-12 weeks. Each belt + test costs $40-70.
Also, for full transparency, the owner encourages positive reviews with rewards like a free special $80 uniform or a $50 credit to your Chosun account. (Obviously not for this review.)
