Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits First Home Series of the Season

The Lindenwood baseball team (2-5) split the series with the University of Mary (2-2) after Monday's doubleheaders.  The Lions won the first game 3-1, but dropped game two by a final of 11-8 at Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

GAME ONE OVERVIEW
Ryan O'Connell pitched a pure game on the bump for the Lions, as the offense provided run support in the bottom of the second inning.  Calvin Nowak continued to generate runs early in the season, as he brought Jayce Maag and Sam Kissane in to score on a single up the middle.  Kolby Schulte drove in the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field.

O'Connell allowed just one run in the top of the fourth inning, but tossed a complete game in the first game of the doubleheader.  Lindenwood scored three runs on just two hits, but stayed patient at the plate to draw eight walks in the seven-inning game.

GAME ONE LEADERS
Ryan O'Connell (7.0 IP, 5 K, 6 H 1 ER)
Calvin Nowak (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB)
Sam Kissane (0-for-1, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 SB)

GAME TWO OVERVIEW
The Marauders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the second game.  The Lions struggled at the plate, but the pitching staff kept the game within reach.  After surrendering a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, Genesis Nunez began the bottom half with a triple to left center.  Schulte drove in Nunez on a sacrifice fly, but the scoring stopped at just one.

Nowak added two more RBI in the bottom of the seventh, after his triple made it a two-run deficit.  Schulte drove in Nowak on a single through the left side, making it a 5-4 ballgame.  The Marauders got back three runs in the top of the eight, but Lindenwood stayed strong at the dish.

The Lions generated just one hit in the bottom of the eighth, but took advantage of shaky pitching by the Marauders.  Lindenwood compiled four runs in the frame to tie the game at 8-8 heading into the final inning of play.  The Lions surrendered three unearned runs in the top of the ninth, resulting in the 11-8 loss to close out the series.
