16 players competed in today’s qualifier at the Wetlands Golf Course for the one qualifying spot and two alternate spots in the 2023 U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier to be held at Martis Camp in Truckee, California. Tee times began this morning at 7:30 AM off the 1st tee. The final group finished way ahead of pace at 12:30 PM. The course played to a par 72 at 6,725 yards.
In today’s qualifier, Stephen Marland of Houston, Texas, showcased a strong performance, carding an impressive two-under par 70. The leaderboard after the 18-hole qualifier featured a three-way tie at two-under between Stephen Marland, Eric Lavespere, and Frank Brame. A playoff on the par 4 18th hole of the Wetlands Golf Course ensued, with Brame falling short and becoming the second alternate. This left Marland and Lavespere to battle on hole 10, also a par 4, for the coveted qualifying spot.
In a gripping showdown, Marland clinched victory with a birdie on hole 10, securing his official qualification for the event in Truckee, California. Marland’s remarkable round included five birdies and three bogeys, earning him the distinction of low round medalist.
Eric Lavespere claimed the first alternate position, displaying his skills with 6 birdies and 4 bogeys. Frank Brame, on the other hand, emerged as the second alternate, completing his round with three birdies and a bogey while maintaining a bogey-free front-nine.
Marland will now advance to the 2023 U.S. Senior Amateur Golf Championship, to be conducted at on August 21st – 26th, 2023.
