Extra training opportunities for our young adult participants…

Starting this week and continuing to the term's end, we are providing our Young Adults program participants the option of an additional 30 minutes of class focusing on forms (kata) relative to each coloured belt level [see schedule below].

Thursdays from 645-715PM at the School of Arts, students at specific levels (or higher) are invited to stay and be instructed on assessment material. This is being offered free of charge, and students are encouraged to attend and further their development.

A karate dojo isn't a place to practice karate - it is a place to learn karate. To get the most out of training, students should practice karate outside the dojo so when they attend classes, they can learn more karate.

Schedule..

Make up classes

We've had some wild weather this term and it has affected us all differently.

Karate Classes will continue UNLESS you receive a text or email.

If you've changed either since joining, please update this with us.

We encourage students who CANT make it to classes due to FLOODING (or COVID) to feel free to attend make-up classes at our other dojo. We have classes Monday in Cooroy and Thursday in Eumundi.

If you have concerns or questions, please communicate with us.

5 years in Eumundi...

Back in December 2016, Eumundi was introduced to a unique combat and healing art. Peter and Stephanie delivered a free event at Eumundi’s quaint blue CWA hall and welcomed many locals of varying ages and abilities to experience this powerful synthesis of personal development and self-protection.

Half a decade on, Karate Community can proudly say how blessed we are to continue supporting our local community. We now teach out of the School of Arts Hall in Eumundi and the Cooroy Memorial Hall where they run eight classes per week.

To say “thanks” to our ongoing and supportive members, Peter and Steph hosted a ‘5 year anniversary party’. Karate students past and present, and their families came to celebrate. It was a fantastic turnout where we could all get together and celebrate the years of successful training and community togetherness.

This fun-filled event boasted a BBQ sausage sizzle, games (parents vs kids), and awards recognising long-time members and those who were outstanding karateka (practitioners) in 2021.

Highlights of the day included the [in]famous Knife Throwing comp (100% safe!), samurai noodle battle, escaping the rope handcuffs and a raffle draw including many awesome prizes. There was a craft and board games zone, totem tennis and equipment spread out for fun-making in between activities and socialising.

Certificates were handed out for those who have trained since Karate Community first opened their doors in Eumundi, recognising their half a decade milestone. Recipients of the "High 5 certificates” were:

Aaron, Xander, Zac, Josif, Laura, Noah, Kobi, Sol and Zavier.

This year also acknowledges an incredible 10-year milestone, the aptly named "Ten-acious certificate”, awarded to the well-deserved sensei Stephanie. Her dedication to karate, insightful coaching and behind the scenes operations is appreciated by all.

2021 high achievers received the "Sensei-tional award" for each class group:

Eddie (prep), Kaea and Declan (junior), Jack (junior+), Jess (young adult) and Isabella (adult).

A raffle draw was held with all prizes donated by local businesses, with all proceeds going towards funding this free event. Karate Community thanks: Terella Brewing – Head Brewer, Brandt Bamford; the Imperial Hotel – General Manager, Paul Thomas; and Suncoast Healing and Yoga – Jen Crowcombe, for their generous contributions.

Karate Community also thanks EDCA, ECCO, EDHA, ECC and everyone who has supported our karate obsession over the years. Peter and Stephanie count themselves blessed to be a part of such an incredible community.

Kumite program about to kick off...

I have been receiving feedback from students wanting more practical combat experience in class.

Kumite (sparring) is a great way to pressure test techniques, gauge where skill levels are, help fortify emotional and physical resilience, and learn how to overcome confrontation and conflict.

While Kumite is essentially fighting one another, it is also about developing positive communication pathways and relationship building.

“… Kumite is like having a conversation”

Ohtsuka Tadahiko O’sensei

To ensure participant safety and manage risk involved with combat, we will be ordering students of our young adult and adult programs protective equipment.

Each student will be provided with:

  • Elite85 leather sparring gloves 7oz

  • EVA foam Shin and instep guards

  • WKF approved Groin or Ovary guard

  • Karate Community Carry Bag

We are offering a special discount on “Sparring Sets” for current members in term 2.

Normally $155

Special Offer $120* [SAVE $35]

Students will be invoiced for sparring gear before the end of term 1 to ensure they have protective gear for term 2 start.

To further enhance student safety, Karate Community will be providing high quality Dipped Foam Chest Protectors for participants to use during kumite sessions.

Protective equipment, like uniforms, will need to be brought to all classes.

If you already have protective equipment, please bring it to class to be approved by Sensei Peter.

Let's arm our young with the confidence they need to battle each wonderful day.

*Offer expires 3/4/2022

We will miss you, Kyan Pennell...

My heart broke at the end of January with the tragic news that we have lost one of our dear karate youth.

Kyan, 12, was intelligent, funny, courageous, shy and had a beautiful energy. He had trained in karate for nearly a year and after 6 months he finally let me help tie his belt.

He was a white light, and the world is a little dimmer without him. Ian , Amanda and Lauryn have our deepest sympathies.

Shed a tear with me, and remember this wonderful young man. “The Project” covered this story.

We created a Go Fund Me account to help out during this difficult time. Money raised went to support funeral and bereavement costs, and ensure the family can take the time they need to grieve and heal.

A message from Amanda and Ian.

“Kyan Pennell, 12, died tragically on the 31st of January 2022, in a freak accident at our home.

He had been self-learning piano off YouTube for 7 months, we didn't realise how good he'd become. He had committed 35 classical pieces to memory, and was teaching himself to read, write and compose music. He was neurodiverse and a self-diagnosed synesthete.

I found a short, handwritten, unfinished composition, which I shared in an open call out on Facebook (original post) to see if anyone could play it. Responses came in and we were able to hear what our son was composing, painful and beautiful at once.

We are asking all musicians, humbly, to play and complete Kyan’s unfinished piece, and submit it here. We will never know what he saw in his mind’s eye, so all versions are giving us insight into what could have been. He did tell us that many people have to die to become famous, well, my beautiful boy, here we are... #playforkyan”
