Artist Research Mark Hearld

Mark Hearld is a British artist born in 1974, he specialises in lino and lithographic prints, collages and hand painted ceramics. His work specialises in lots of nature and other forms of organic life, the artist studied his work at Glasgow College Art where he further progressed as an artist.

Mark Hearld’s work is very colourful and has lots of collage to layer up his prints, the print on the right has lots of materials most notably the buildings are layered up by newspaper. I like how the artist Mark Hearld uses darker and bigger text of newspaper for darker tones and smaller text for lighter places, this gives it a lighting effect which I like because it makes seem very accurate and realistic with light effect.

Mark Hearld’s work is impressionist however the artist puts in lots of detail such as the fish scales being made up of different collage, I particularly like how the colours look natural and almost look like an authentic fish.

A lot of the colour Mark Hearld uses consists of cool colours, I like this as well because the sky is always dark and night time like blending perfectly with the dark blue’s and greens that fit with the whole nature theme.

A couple of prints that Mark Hearld has made which I aspire to is the print called Salad Days on the left and Starlings on the Shore. I’ll start with Starlings on the Shore because I like how the artist uses the colour black as it’s primary focus however the blue can be made out to be a night sky, I like how the artist uses lots of black to fill up the print because it gives it more mystery and has an ominous but relaxing effect in my opinion. The left print Salad Days is another of my favourites by Mark Hearld not just because I like bunnies but because of the detail he puts into them, the hatching marks put detail into the fur. I also love how the artist uses the switch between the black and brown colours on the left bunny because it shows how well the artist understands the lighting and everything about tone all together.

I aspire myself to Mark Hearld because his work is all related to nature and organic, because I like his work is that I have always been inspired by nature and the wildlife around me. The artist fully gains my attention because I enjoy his work on nature and how he is able to even use collage like newspaper and sparkling dresses, to recreate and capture the beauty of nature and the natural wildlife.

As an artist Mark Hearld uses texture in his work, the texture feels smooth and the surface he works on are layered up with collage like newspaper and fabric.
I relate my own work to Mark Hearld’s because I aspire myself to nature the way he does, I also like the focal points he uses in his prints because it shows the main things I set my attention to likewise the Salad Days print, the main three focuses are the two rabbits and the shed in the background because they make up a lot of the space in the print. I also like the composition of Mark Hearld’s work because there is lots going on. The main focus is the animals in the foreground, then there is the flowers and the forest,  then the sky and last the shed in the background, it shows that a lot is going on in the picture.
