tion of riding opportunities to browse through – as well as plenty of inspiration. Once you’ve spotted your ideal holiday, book directly with the venue itself through the app, rather than via a middleman such as a travel agent.

East and South America, Iceland, and India. If you want to stay closer to home, there are plenty of UK options too.

With travel back on the agenda, a horse-riding holiday is a brilliant way of combining sightseeing with learning a new skill. Whether you’re looking for a chance to find your inner cowboy or want to enjoy exploring Europe’s rural countryside, seeing the world on horseback is an experience like no other.

Wherever you want to travel, holidays on horseback are becoming more popular across the world, and with many also offering the chance to engage with farming, herding, and rural culture, it’s a great travelling alternative that will leave even the non-rider with some expertise and knowledge, as well as happy memories of your time away.

These days, it’s simple to book all kinds of accommodation and transport with just a click of the mouse, so wouldn’t it be great to be able to do that when it comes to arranging the perfect horsey holiday? The good news is that now you can.

A new app called Cavago brings together horse-mad vacationers and equestrian establishments to create tailor-made holidays that need not break the bank. The process is simple. Decide what kind of holiday you are looking for, and where, and then visit the Cavago app, there you will find a wide selec-

One of the advantages of this direct-booking method is that you can have so much more flexibility, especially as you can easily communicate with your holiday hosts in advance to ask any queries you might have, make changes, or put in special requests. In that way, there will be no nasty surprises when you arrive and equally, your hosts will already know something about you and your individual requirements.

The app has so much to offer. You can plan and book your equestrian experiences with establishments anywhere in the world. From an estancia in Uruguay offering polo lessons, to an Irish castle where cross country jumps challenge even the most well-heeled horse lover, there are hundreds of destinations where you can enjoy horseback riding. You don’t have to be an expert to saddle up at stunning equestrian-friendly locations around the world. Many welcome beginners, children, and more experienced riders to mount up and explore.

The first thing to consider is who is going. Is it a holiday of a lifetime with like-minded friends to be spent solely in the saddle or are you taking the non-horsey other half or family members? Luxury accommodation or happy to be in less salubrious surroundings? All the establishments have their full details listed on the app.

Destinations are just as exciting as the activities, with holidays in locations as diverse as Mongolia and South Africa, the Middle

With the Cavago app, finding a location and booking your time away couldn’t be easier, and, with thoughts turning to the coming holiday season there’s no better time than the present to start planning your next big adventure.

Why not make your events this year more glamourous, treat yourself to that glass of champagne sprinkled with a bit of luxury, indulge in those extra special chocolates at the sweet stand, or go that extra mile and book yourself into the events accommodation.

The Badminton Retreat, launched in 2019, was heralded a resounding success with 100’s of resident guests and day visitors enjoying the luxury glamping facilities, bar and restaurant situated close to the action on the edge of the cross-country course at Huntsman’s Close.

“We start planning for the next year almost straight after we’ve packed and cleared everything off site for the current one!” says Emily. “We have a de-brief with all the team to identify any issues that might have arisen, what worked well, what could be improved upon, feed back received from guests, and what we can add for the next time. There’s a tremendous amount to organise behind the scenes and we are dedicated to making it a really special experience for guests and visitors alike.”

Barny heads the team that build the Retreat village which takes around a month of long days and hard work. “It’s pretty full on for about four to five weeks but we have a great team with us, and the reward is the beaming faces of guests when they arrive” he grins, “we now have quite a few returning guests both from the UK and abroad, who were very quick to book up for this year, so that’s really great!”

Emily, but their determination and resilience saw them through, and 2022 was another great success. “We still have a way to go to recover from the effect the pandemic had on business, but it’s all looking really positive. Bookings are up on last year and we are very close to selling out of several of the accommodation options. We’ve just opened up bookings for the Retreat Restaurant (run by Tarr Farm Inn) for day visitors, and we were completely packed out in the evenings last year!”

The Retreat is very much a family run business founded by husband and wife team Barny and Emily Lee. Emily (nee MacKenzie) competed several times at Badminton during

HOE GRANGE HOLIDAYS

Imagine waking up every morning to the sight of your horse grazing in the paddock outside your cabin window. The Pennine Bridleway and High Peak Trail are easily accessible through the fields, just 500 metres from the farmyard, providing miles of safe off-road riding.

Bring your horse on holiday and in addition to the local bridlepaths, you can ride over 250 acres of privately owned farmland, (depending on weather conditions and cropping). Imagine cantering across the undulating open fields.

Holidays with your horse provide a great opportunity to get your horse really fit and increase stamina

OUR SUGGESTIONS FOR 2023:

The Iberian peninsula where you can mix riding with beach holidays. There are many small private riding centres that combine training with trekking if you really want to immerse yourself in the horse world. Attractions such as the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art are a must see.

The United Arab Emirates offer magical desert and beach rides on the beautiful Arabian horses that they are famed for. Mix

this up with a luxury hotel and a bit of retail therapy and you cover all bases. Further afield you can unwind in the remote Patagonian Wilderness and take part in the annual cattle round up with the Chilean Gauchos.

Looking for somewhere a little closer to home then consider a staycation with a difference. Short breaks in some of the UK’s most beautiful counties offer limitless riding opportunities. Why not try falconry from horseback in Dartmoor or swing a polo mallet aboard a feisty hi goal pony or even take a leisurely meander through the parkland of a country house hotel followed up by afternoon tea!

THE SCOTTISH EQUESTRIAN HOTEL

What better way to spend your Summer getaway then to visit The Scottish Equestrian Hotel in Lanark. Situated in one of the most beautiful and accessible areas of Scotland, just 40 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports. They’re surrounded by fabulous walks, great golf courses, mountain biking tracks and amazing history. Whatever you want to do, be it riding holidays and leisure you’re sure to find it here.

TOP TIPS:

Always be up front about your level of riding, there is nothing worse than being over horsed, you may also need to give weight and height details for everyone in your party, so be truthful as the horses need to be suitable.

Make sure to take your own riding kit if you want to be comfortable. Safety hats are not necessarily provided or considered essential in many countries so take your own if in doubt.

Riding leggings are the ideal cross over item for an active holiday, taking you from a morning yoga session to hours in the saddle.

Eventing is a sport in which this country excels; Britain is currently the Olympic and European champion and Yasmin Ingham, who will be competing at Badminton, is the reigning world champion, plus England is also a world centre for international riders: the current world number one in the sport, Tim Price from New Zealand, is based here.

Badminton 2023 promises to be a memorable weekend, as it coincides with the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen

The first day of dressage will be on Friday (May 5). There will be a break in the middle of the second day of dressage (Saturday, May 6) so that everyone can watch the Coronation on the big screens. EVENTING EXPLAINED

Badminton Horse Trials is one of the toughest and most exciting equestrian events – the pinnacle of the worldwide horse trials calendar.

COMPETITION LEVEL

The Air Ambulances UK is the chosen charity of the year, this organisation which provides such a crucial service, particularly in the countryside and in horse sport. Pop along to their stand to enjoy the helicopter simulator.

Horses and riders complete the competition over 4 days, each day consisting of a different discipline. Horses and riders must first complete a dressage test on day 1 or 2, demonstrating Obedience, Discipline, Accuracy and Elegance. On day 3 they need to prove their fitness, athleticism and stamina by tackling a 4 mile cross country course jumping solid man-made and natural obstacles within a set time. Finally, on day 4, the competitors must complete a course of show jumps designed to test their agility and accuracy, again within a given time, to demonstrate soundness and the ability to recover.

The order of starting is the same for the dressage and cross country test and will be fixed by draw. On the last day competitors will be required to jump in reverse order.

International horse trials are given a star grading according to their level of difficulty. The higher the grade, or number of stars, the more complex and physically demanding the competition becomes. Badminton is a 5 star event, the highest grade and one of only 6 such events in the world. Badminton is the oldest (1949) and is generally regarded as the most prestigious event. Both horses and riders must qualify in order to compete at Badminton. Qualification can take a number of years to achieve.

HORSE INSPECTION

Before the competition starts each horse is ‘trotted up’ in front of an inspection panel consisting of a vet and the Ground Jury (judges) to ensure the horse is healthy, sound and fit to compete. This is called the First Inspection and takes place on the Wednesday afternoon.

Badminton 2022

Laura Collett realised a childhood dream as she won Badminton Horse Trials, presented by Mars Equestrian, after a superb performance on Karen Bartlett and Keith Scott’s London 52. Laura’s finishing score of 21.4 — she added a mere 0.4 of a show jumping time penalty to her dressage mark — is a record completion score for Badminton.

It was the first British one-two-three since Pippa Funnell led William Fox-Pitt and Leslie Law 20 years ago in 2002, and Laura Collett revealed that Pippa’s win on Supreme Rock had been her childhood inspiration. ‘I was going round the cross-country on my aunt’s shoulders and I wanted to be Pippa Funnell winning Badminton,’ she said.

When Laura entered the arena, she had the luxury of a fence in hand over Ros, but

the pressure was huge. ‘That horse is amazing,’ she said of her Tokyo Olympic gold medallist. ‘He jumped his socks off. I couldn’t see a distance anywhere but he just got higher and higher.’

After a gap of three years, support for the event was huge. One hundred and eighty thousand visitors attended over the four days, and the many tradestands did a roaring trade, delighted to be back.

‘It was everything I could have wished for,’ said Event Director Jane Tuckwell. ‘Lots of happy people, fantastic result, wonderful sponsors in our presenting partner Mars Equestrian and our official partner Lifesource BP, it’s a dream come true. Bring on 2023.’

Olympic gold medallist and reigning Badminton champion Laura Collett is an ambassador for Bloomfields and recently took delivery of her exquisite Bloomfields Professional. “The team at Bloomfields have been brilliant to work with,” she said. “Nothing has been too much trouble for them. The quality of my new lorry is exceptional and I can’t wait to get out competing in it.”

The company, a family business, began in 2005 when its founder, Dean Moody, built his first horsebox at his parents’ house, Bloomfield, in Nottinghamshire. It now builds up to 10 new horseboxes per week from its large Worksop factory, supplying equestrian clients world wide while still retaining the personal touch. During the Badminton weekend, former dual winner and international rider William Fox-Pitt will take delivery of his new lorry. Both William and Laura will be visiting the Bloomfields Horseboxes stand for signing and photo opportunities.

“We are delighted to be part of such a high-profile event as Badminton,” said Helen Moody, Director of Bloomfields Horseboxes Ltd. ‘ We are very excited to be launching one of our new models at the show, along with showcasing a range of our smaller horseboxes from 3.5 – 5T. We have always aspired to be sponsors at Badminton Horse trials, and could not be happier to be a part of the show for 2023.’

“We are delighted to welcome Bloomfields to Badminton,” said Horse Trials Director Jane Tuckwell. “They already have connections with some of the top riders and should be in for a great weekend.”

Unleash A CALM CANINE

We hear from The Dog Trust’s Director of Canine Behaviour and Research, Dr Rachel Casey with advice on Dog Behaviour and Bite Prevention

It’s estimated that there are over 13 million dogs in the UK, and the overwhelming majority live harmoniously with their families, and play a positive role in the lives of their owners. In a recent survey by Dogs Trust, more than eight in ten dog owners said spending time with their dog, such as playing with them or taking them for a walk, made them feel more positive, and

around the same number said their dog was important to their mental health.

However, recent reports from police forces from around the UK indicate an increase in the number of reported dog related incidents, including dog bites. This is a concern to everyone working in the dog welfare sector, and one that Dogs Trust is taking seriously.

There isn’t a simple answer as to why

incidences are increasing. The data can be difficult to interpret because the population of dogs in the UK has increased significantly over the last few years, so the number of incidents is also likely to have increased in line with that. The increase in purchase of puppies over the pandemic may also be a factor. During COVID-19 lockdowns owners found it more difficult to adequately socialise and train their dogs. They weren’t able to easily mix with other people or dogs, have visitors to the house, travel to new places, or help their puppy experience the range of normal life experiences. Dogs acquired in lockdown are now reaching adolescence when any behavioural signs tend to come to a head, so it is feasible that one of the consequences of the lockdown is an increase in undesired behaviours. In addition, some

Fantasia Lycra Hat Covers

data sources include all ‘dog related injuries’, which might include being knocked over by a dog or being scratched. Plus, not all bite injuries happen through aggression. Some arise due to accidents during play, and a puppy mouthing a small child or elderly person might result in a hospital admission. Regardless, the increase in reported incidents is a worrying trend.

FEAR OR ANXIETY

The causes of dog bites are complex. One thing we are sure of, however, is that aggression in dogs most often starts as a behavioural response to fear or anxiety. Any dog can act aggressively if they feel worried about something, particularly if they can’t get away. Aggressive responses then become established where dogs learn that their behaviour ‘works’ to avoid the situations they are worried about. The best way to prevent aggression is therefore to teach dogs to be confident and relaxed about the various things they are likely to come across in everyday life. That is why Dogs Trust advocates prevention as the best long-term solution to dog bites.

Preventing aggression starts with puppies. Dogs need teaching from an early age how to cope with the complexities of the modern domestic world. Early life socialisation means not only getting puppies used to all the aspects of domestic life they are likely to come across later in life – but making sure these first experiences are positive ones. A calm positive first experience of new situations will help avoid later problems.

TRAINING

Another important aspect for prevention problems is putting time into positively training dogs and teaching them some basic life skills, such as coming back when called, walking calmly on a lead and settling down when we’re busy. While ideally this would be started with a puppy, dogs can learn at any age: it is never too late to start training with your dog. When we talk to owners about training, they sometimes think they don’t need to train their dog, or worry that its unpleasant or difficult. But it’s not about coercion or making dogs do things they don’t want to do; training dogs should always be fun and result in stronger bonds between dogs and owners, with the added benefit of preventing the later development of problems. Dogs Trust’s Dog School provides dog owners with access to fun,

reward-based training, and helps owners to read their dog’s behaviour and to teach them skills that will enable them to cope with day-to-day events. If there isn’t a Dog School in your area, find a trainer who uses reward based methods only and be consistent; as a mixture of methods and approach may cause confusion and anxiety for the dog. Avoid trainers who use coercive methods as this can increase fear and aggression risk.

SPOT THE WARNING SIGNS

It’s also important to be able to recognise when things are going wrong and seeking help early. Dog owners should be able to spot the early warning signs that they are worried before a situation escalates. Dogs don’t speak our language so we need to learn to “speak dog” and understand subtle changes in their body language. Ears going

back, tension in their body, or their tail tucked under are all signs that they are uncomfortable. More obvious signs if they cannot escape something that worries them might be pulling away, crouching down, rolling right over or growling. If you notice any of these signs move your dog away from the situation, or take the situation away from the dog.

MANS BEST FRIEND

It’s so much easier to treat problems in the early stages than to change a more established behaviour. It is human nature to sometimes ignore something that is manageable or hope that it gets better on its own, but generally if you don’t proactively address a problem, things are likely to progress. Speak to your vet who can rule out any health issues, such as a source of pain, that may be causing changes in behaviour,

and they will also be able to refer you to a qualified behaviorist.

PREVENTION

The other important factor in prevention is knowing your dog. Look for signs when they might be worried by something, and make sure you help them by managing the environment to prevent escalation. For example, many dogs might be worried about people coming to the door and preventing aggression in this circumstance could be as simple as keeping them behind a door or baby gate when deliveries arrive. In the longer term, a behaviourist can help you teach them that people coming to the door is a good thing – but it is also important for safety to manage the problem in the short term. The other important aspect for safety is careful monitoring when dogs are with children. No matter how well behaved your dog is, never leave them alone with children and always carefully monitor their interactions so you can intervene before worrying situations escalate.

Where there are sadly incidents of dog bites, there is very often a focus on the breed of the dog involved. We know from a wider range of research studies that breed has very little influence on the risk of aggression: any breed of dog could learn to show aggression given the right circumstances. This focus on breed has led to calls from some corners to increase the number and types of dogs covered by the Breed Specific sections of the Dangerous Dogs Act. While there are parts of the Act that, importantly, protect the public from dogs who are dangerously out of control, the UK’s biggest welfare and veterinary organisations, including Dogs Trust, disagree with Breed Specific Legislation. We believe that simply adding more dogs to the list, and judging behaviour purely on how a dog looks, isn’t working. Instead, we would like to see the law replaced with legislation that better protects public safety and dog welfare, and allows better education to keep people safe around dogs while allowing early intervention to help dogs with behavioural concerns.

RENOVATE OR DECORATE?

It’s really important to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Take some time to consider what you want to change and why. Do you need more space? Are you looking to modernize your home? Do you want to create a specific atmosphere or style? Understanding your goals will help you to prioritize and plan your project effectively. Once you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, it’s time to start thinking about the practicalities. Budget is one of the most important considerations. Be realistic about what you can afford and be prepared to make compromises if necessary. It’s also important to factor in any additional costs such as planning permission, building regulations, and professional fees.

THINK BIG

If you’re considering a big project like an extension, it’s worth investing in the services of an architect or designer. They will be able to help you with planning, design and project management. A good architect or designer will also be able to advise on how to make the most of the available space and ensure that the finished result is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

When it comes to smaller projects like redecoration, you may be able to tackle the job yourself. However, it’s still important to plan carefully and ensure that you have all the necessary tools and materials before you get started. If you’re unsure about any aspect

Renovating your home can be an exciting and daunting prospect. The chance to update your living space, improve your quality of life and potentially increase the value of your property.
Whether you’re considering a big project like an extension or a smaller project like redecoration, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get started.

of the project, don’t be afraid to seek advice from a professional.

One of the key benefits of renovating your home is that you can tailor it to your specific needs and tastes. If you’re looking to create a specific atmosphere or style, it’s worth spending some time researching different options. There are plenty of resources available online, from interior design blogs to social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. You can also seek inspiration from magazines, TV shows, and diy stores.

SOURCING MATERIALS

Another important factor to consider is the practicality of your project. If you have young children or pets, for example, you may need to think carefully about materials and finishes that are durable and easy to clean. Similarly, if you’re planning a renovation with a view to selling your home in the future, it’s worth considering what potential buyers are likely to be looking for. This might include features like a modern kitchen, a well-designed bathroom or plenty of storage space.

When it comes to actually carrying out the renovation work, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, it’s important to be realistic about timescales. Renovation work can often take longer than expected, so it’s

important to plan for any potential delays. It’s also worth being prepared for disruption to your daily routine. Renovations can be messy and noisy, so it’s worth considering alternative living arrangements if necessary.

Communication is also key. If you’re working with a team of professionals, make sure that everyone is clear about what is expected of them and when. Keep lines of communication open and be prepared to be flexible if necessary.

Finally, it’s worth remembering that renovating your home is a process, not a quick fix. Be prepared to invest time, effort and money into your project, but also be prepared to reap the rewards in the long term. Renovating your home can be a great way to improve your quality of life and create a space that truly reflects your personality and tastes.Putting the renovation and building work aside, aesthetically your finished projects look all comes down to detail and personal choice. This is your home so decor should reflect your personality and make you feel comfortable and happy. Considering functionality of your décor is something that quite often can get forgotten but should also be considered. For example, a decorative mirror not only adds style to your home but can also make a room appear more spacious.

TOP TIPS

PAINT

The right paint colour can transform a room, making it feel brighter and more spacious, or darker and more cosy. Consider the natural light in the room, as well as the mood you want to create.

Neutral colours are a safe option and work well in any room. However, if you want to add a pop of colour, consider using an accent wall to add interest to a room without overwhelming it. Glossy finishes reflect light and are easy to clean, making them a good option for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. However, they can also highlight imperfections on walls. Matte or eggshell finishes are better for hiding imperfections but can be more challenging to clean.

COLOUR AND PATTERNS:

Choosing the right colour and patterns for your home decor can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of your home. Neutral colours such as beige, grey, and white create a calm and soothing atmosphere, while brighter colours such as blue, green, and yellow can create a more energetic and livelier feel. Patterns can also add interest and texture to your decor. However, it’s essential to choose patterns that complement each other and don’t clash. Mixing different patterns can be challenging, so if you’re not sure, stick to one or two patterns in a room.

MATERIALS

When selecting materials, it’s essential to consider the purpose of the room. For example, hardwood floors may be beautiful in a living room, but they may not be practical in a bathroom where moisture can damagwe them. It’s also essential to consider the maintenance requirements of each material. For example, granite countertops may look beautiful, but they require regular sealing to prevent stains.

FURNITURE

When picking furniture for your new home, it’s essential to consider both style and functionality. Start by measuring the rooms and doorways to ensure that the furniture you choose will fit. Consider your lifestyle and how you use each room to determine the type of furniture you need. Invest in high-quality, durable pieces that will last for years to come. Choose a colour palette that complements your décor.

HANDS ON LEARNING

In addition to formal education, there are many opportunities for hands-on experience with horses. Volunteer work at local stables or horse rescues can provide valuable experience in horse care and handling. Horse riding lessons are another way to learn about horses, as they often include instruction on proper care and handling of horses.

For those who prefer to learn from the comfort of their own home, there are many online resources available. Websites, blogs and social media groups dedicated to horses can provide a wealth of information on horse care and welfare.

It is important to note that equine education is an ongoing process. There is always more to learn, and new research and techniques are continually being developed. Therefore, it is essential for horse enthusiasts to stay up-to-date on the latest information and developments in equine care and welfare.

Horse shows, competitions and other equestrian events are a significant part of the horse industry. However, these events

can also be stressful and even harmful for horses if they are not conducted with proper care and welfare in mind. Therefore, it is important for those involved in the equestrian community to prioritise the well-being of the horses. This includes proper care before, during and after events, as well as monitoring the welfare of the horses and taking action if necessary. Education on equine welfare should be a mandatory component of any equestrian event, and those who cannot meet welfare standards should be held accountable.

DIVERSITY

A variety of courses can offer supporting knowledge to the equine criteria, for example agricultural courses. Agriculture is the backbone of many economies worldwide, and as such, there is a high demand for professionals in the field. Crop cultivation, livestock farming, and farm management all have crossover elements that aid the knowledge base needed to properly care for horses.

One of the benefits of agricultural courses is that they offer hands-on training, which enables students to develop practical skills

that they can apply in real-world scenarios. Learners are taught about the different types of crops, animal breeds, and soil types, among other agricultural aspects, to ensure that they have a comprehensive understanding of the field.

If you are interested in an equine or agricultural career, spend some time online researching the many options to find the ideal course for you, be it online, classroom or hands-on learning.

Fabric Fabulous

Have you updated your spring and summer wardrobe lately? You may not have to, if you have a go-to jeans collection. It goes without saying that classic jeans are always in fashion.

CLASSIC BLUE JEANS

The traditional indigo colour is a firm favourite, and this year the look is predicted to be a simple one – blue jeans, a white T shirt and a checked shirt. The Bottega Veneta spring 2023 runway show previewed the look with Kate Moss modelling it, with the outfit being described as ‘casual comfort’; something equestrian and countryside enthusiasts know all about.

This simple outfit is certainly a more low-key look that we have come to expect from the high-end fashion designers. With the nation learning to cope with financial constraints, elite brands are perhaps embracing a more discreet look in 2023. A ‘quiet luxury’, as Vogue magazine described; or ‘forever pieces, expertly executed’, as the fashion bible proposed, ahead of this season.

WE HAVE THE FRENCH TO THANK

Those of us who are carefully following fashion trends may be wearing our jeans low-slung, to expose the base of the spine, this spring - this 90s trend is set to make a comeback. But we have to say, this look does not work well when filling haynets or riding horses. A high-waisted pair seems infinitely more practical?

As you pull on your trusted jeans (or stretchy denim breeches!), do you give a thought to the material itself?

Levi Strauss may get the kudos for inventing jeans, but we actually have the French to thank for denim. This popular cotton twill fabric has a long and interesting

(breeches crossed with leggings) making an awkward and somewhat optimistic leap into the horsey vernacular in recent years.

FAB FRINGING

Fringing is back with a vengeance. Designers like Victoria Beckham, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen have all included it in their collections this season; Ms. Beckham’s fringed bags are especially desirable. The trend-setting detailing has been used in fashion for hundreds of years, however; it can actually be traced back to ancient cultures, such as the Egyptians and Greeks, who used fringing to decorate garments and accessories like headdresses. In medieval Europe, fringing was often used to decorate the edges of cloaks and other outerwear; so while we often associate fringing with the ‘flapper girl’ outfits from the 1920s, the style actually goes back centuries.

Fringed dresses, skirts, and shawls were popular among flappers, the daring dancers and socialites of the 1920s, as the movement of the threads added to the sensation of movement

LOVELY LACE

Have you noticed all the beautiful, lace-embellished ladies-wear on the high street this spring? The delicate, ornamental fabric has a long and fascinating history in fashion, dating back to the 16th century. It was first developed in Italy, and became popular among the wealthy and fashionable. The production of lace was a labour-intensive process that involved weaving together thin threads of silk, linen, or cotton into complex patterns; during the 17th and 18th centuries, lace became increasingly popular in Europe, and it was used to create decorative garments for the aristocracy. Lace was often used to embellish dresses, coats, and accessories, and it was an important symbol of wealth and status.

In the 19th century, advances in technology made it possible to produce lace on a larger scale, and it became more widely available to people of all social classes.

Lace continued to be a popular fashion accessory throughout the 20th century, and it was often used to create elegant evening wear and bridal gowns. In the 21st century, lace has been embraced by a new generation of designers who have used it to create bold, contemporary designs. This year, the lace dress is the item to be seen in, in a single, bold colour.

and freedom. In the 1960s and 1970s, fringing became popular again as part of a hippy, bohemian style. Boho fashion, as we refer to it now, is all about freedom, individuality, and self-expression, and fringing was often used on accessories like bags and belts. It continues to come around in cycles, and in 2023, the trend is back again. Any material goes, but to avoid being a oneseason wonder, look out for something that goes with your capsule wardrobe, and is of good quality; such as a modestly-fringed handbag in a brown hue.

CROCHETING

Like lace detailing, crochet has hit the high street stores as a ‘cute’, boho style that is reminiscent of the 1970s. Crochet elements add a handmade, artisanal feel to fashion. Brands including Hermès, Isabel Marant and Marine Serre have included it this season, commonly in muted tones, but in avant-garde styles. Crochet is a type of needlework that involves using a hook to create a fabric from yarn; it is used to add texture and a sense of handmade quirkiness to garments and accessories, particularly in bohemian and retro-inspired styles. Crochet tops, dresses, skirts, and even swimwear (Missoni’s barelythere, colourful crochet bikinis, which retail just shy of £400, are reportedly popular with the holidaying jet-set), can add a playful and whimsical touch to one’s wardrobe.

If you’re into accessories, crochet can also be found in accessories such as hats, scarves, bags, and jewellery in 2023. These pieces often feature intricate patterns and unique designs that showcase the skill of the crochet artist, so this is a great way to find a special item, and choose an investment piece. Crochet can of course be combined with other materials such as leather or silk to create stunning looks.

METALLIC ACCENTS & CHAINMAIL

Another popular trend this spring is metallic accents. Metalwork can be used in various ways to create eye-catching and unique designs. This season, we will see embellishments such as metal studs and rings added to clothing such as leather jackets and denim to create a tough and edgy look. Metalwork is also popular this spring on jewellery pieces incorporated into clothing, such as metal chains attached to garments, creating a bold and luxurious look. This season, designers including Paco Rabanne, Burberry and Stella McCartney have all used metalwork as an overlay to outfits, giving an almost armour-like feel, to add some interest to a plain outfit.

Now, if the low rise jeans we mentioned previously fill you with horror, you may not like their accompanying look - body bling. The body chain – a long, layered necklace that can reach as low as the belly, to accompany anything from a basic t-shirt to a little black dress – is back. With a nod to traditional crochet using thread, ‘metallic crochet’ is also reportedly something to look out for – a chainmail accessory without the delicacy and cost of actual crochet that is made from yarn.

These metallic, jangly accessories may not be the most practical apparel for tending to your horses, or even walking the dog; but for those of us who enjoy getting dressed up to go out, the metallic trend will certainly make you stand out this spring.

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

If you’re an animal lover, you’ll know how heart-breaking it is to see pets being mistreated or abandoned. Fortunately, there are many charities in the UK that work tirelessly to rescue and rehome animals in need. we’ve taken a closer look at how these charities operate, and explore some of the ways you can get involved in helping to improve the welfare of animals.

One of the main ways in which animal charities help pets is by providing temporary homes for them. This is particularly important for pets that have been abandoned or abused, as they often require special care and attention before they can be

rehomed. Charities have dedicated animal centres where pets can receive the care they need while waiting for their forever homes. This includes medical treatment, behavioural training, and plenty of love and attention from staff and volunteers.

If you have some spare time, volunteering at an animal charity can be a rewarding way to help out. Many charities rely on volunteers to help with tasks such as feeding and walking pets, cleaning out cages and kennels, and socialising

with animals to help them become more comfortable around humans. Volunteering is a great way to learn more about animal welfare and to make a real difference in the lives of pets in need. Plus, spending time with animals can be incredibly therapeutic and can help to reduce stress and anxiety.

Donating items is another way in which you can help animal charities. Many charities are in need of items such as pet food, blankets, toys, and cleaning supplies. You can find out what items are needed by checking the charity’s website or by getting in touch with them directly. Donating items is a great way to help out even if you don’t have much spare time or money to give.

Of course, donating money is always appreciated too. Charities rely on donations to fund their operations, including providing medical treatment and care for pets, as well as maintaining their animal centres. Donating money can be a great way to make a meaningful difference in the lives of pets in

need. Even small donations can add up over time and make a real impact.

If you’re interested in adopting a pet, animal charities can be a great place to start. Not only will you be providing a loving home for a pet in need, but you’ll also be supporting the charity’s work in rescuing and rehoming animals. Many charities have a variety of pets available for adoption, from cats and dogs to rabbits, guinea pigs, and even horses. Before adopting a pet, it’s important to make sure that you’re ready for the responsibility and that you have the time and resources to provide the care they need.

Another way in which you can support animal welfare is by spreading awareness. Many people are simply unaware of the issues faced by animals in the UK, or of the work being done by charities to help them. By sharing information about animal welfare on social media, talking to friends and family, or even just wearing a t-shirt with a pro-animal message, you can help to raise

awareness and encourage others to get involved in supporting animal charities.

It’s worth noting that animal welfare isn’t just about rescuing and rehoming pets. It’s also about ensuring that animals are treated with respect and dignity throughout their lives. This includes advocating for stronger animal welfare laws, and supporting initiatives that promote responsible pet ownership. By doing so, we can help to prevent pets from ending up in shelters in the first place, and ensure that all animals are treated with the care and respect they deserve.

REHOMING A HORSE

Equine Charities are even more involved than other animalw charities, with the rehoming process involving several steps. First, the horses are evaluated to determine their temperament, health, and behaviour. This information is used to match the horse with a suitable adopter. Potential adopters are vetted to ensure that they are able to provide an adiquate, safe, and appropriate home for

Air Ambulances UK is the official national charity that champions, supports and represents the lifesaving work, of air ambulance wcharities, enabling them to save the lives of even more people who suddenly experience a life-threatening injury or medical emergency every day across the UK.

the horse. This may include a home visit, reference checks, and an application process.

Many equine charities also work hard to educate the public about responsible ownership. This could be reducing costs, without compromising the animals welfare, promoting proper nutrition, exercise, regular veterinary care, but also your intent for the horse or pony in your life. Are they broken, ridden, or being taken on as a pet. This is something that needs to be considered when rehoming. By educating the public about these issues, this will help to reduce the number of horses or ponies being returned to welfare centres.

ADOPT, DON’T SHOP

Once a suitable adopter has been found and the horse is placed in their care, many charities provide ongoing support and resources to ensure that the transition is successful. This can be anything from training to veterinary care. Some horse charities will offer a loan contract, this means that the charity will continue to own the horse or pony, but the loaner will take on the animal as their own and will be required to be financially responsible for its upkeep. If for any reason the charity feels the animal being loaned is at any sort of risk, the loan contract can be ceased, and the horse or pony will therefore be returned to the charity.

The number of homeless animals far exceeds the capacity of many shelters, leading to overcrowding and overburdened staff. This can lead to reduced quality of care and increased stress and illness among the animals. Many people are not prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership, and may not have the time, resources, or knowledge to provide proper care for an animal. This can lead to animals being returned to shelters or abandoned, which can be heart-breaking for both the animal and the shelter staff.

We can all play our part in helping all Charities be it a rehoming, Welfare, mental health, disability or rescue service, this can be done by making a financial donation, leaving a legacy donation or by simply volunteering your time.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary is looking for experienced horse owners with room in their hearts and homes to rehome a rescued pony.

Due to the nature of Redwings’ recent welfare work, many of the ponies available to rehome are cobs and native type ponies between 12hh and 13.2hh. They are commonly available to rehome as unbacked projects, where their Guardians take on their ridden training, or as non-ridden companions.

In 2022, Redwings rehomed 154 of their rescued horses and ponies, a record number for the charity, including Redwings Olga.

Olga was just a foal when she arrived at Redwings with her mum, in 2014. Redwings offered a home to a large number of ponies who had been found sick and emaciated. The ponies were found standing in deep mud with a lack of clean fresh water, and most had no food at all.

In April 2022, Olga found a home with Guardian Sarah in Suffolk and, as their story shows, rehoming a rescued horse not only allowed Olga the chance to form a special one-to-one bond in her home, but also helped Sarah through

the toughest time for any horse owner. Sarah had two horses, Connie and Comet. Aged 26, Comet’s health was sadly starting to deteriorate so Sarah approached Redwings looking for a companion.

Sarah said:

“ It was a heart-breaking time, but I knew I didn’t want Connie to be left alone. We had the home check, and the Redwings Field Officer was very understanding of our situation. We visited Redwings Caldecott in Norfolk and met two ponies. I would have happily had them both but Olga stood out to us with her amazing blue eyes, both slightly different. We could see she was a little character so we asked if she could come home with us.

“ We gradually introduced all the ponies over the fence and gave Olga the stable name Lily.

Once Comet passed, we integrated Connie with Lily, and I just don’t know what we would have done without her. She has helped to heal our hearts.

“ Lily is always pleased to see us, whinnying when we go to the stables or field and always meeting me at the gate. She loves a groom, especially under her neck.

“ There’s a window between her and Connie’s stables so they can see each other, and they groom each other through it. Lily even mirrors Connie’s routine in the stable, standing in the same places, which really made me smile the first day I noticed it.

“ I miss Comet terribly, but Lily has helped hugely. She is an absolute sweetheart. We feel honoured to have her in our lives and so grateful to Redwings for letting us have her, and for being so kind and understanding in our situation.”

THE WORLD’S OLDEST HORSE CHARITY

For over 130 years our Home of Rest for Horses has specialised in providing retirement and respite for working horses and ponies. These hard-working equine public servants have served our nation in the Police, the Army or with charities such as Riding for the Disabled. We also provide sanctuary to horses, ponies and donkeys who have suffered from cruelty or neglect and who are in desperate need of specialist treatment and care.

It is at our Home of Rest for Horses that we demonstrate best practice and deliver professional training in horse care and welfare. We have invested in funding veterinary research that has led to major advances in horse care. This training and research helps develop the knowledge and skills needed to improve the care, welfare and quality of life of all horses.

From our very first day on 10th May 1886 we have relied entirely on donations from the general public to support our work. With your help, we can give these animals the life and retirement that they truly deserve.

Professional glitter tattoos & stencils for horses, ponies and a range of stylish equine accessories

Until now, traditional quartermarking has taken time and been very limited with the designs available. More recent developments in paint and gel products have increased creativity, but often with disappointing results as they are unable to give a crisp and detailed finish and can appear as a thick crust. Glamourati has developed a quartermarking process which allows intricate designs, logos and text to be easily applied to horses using a specially formulated adhesive, glitter

and stencil. The unique and patentpending method of application means that no artistic skill is required and all manner of designs can easily be applied to short-haired or clipped horses and last up to 2 weeks.

Glamourati’s ‘glitter tattoos for horses’ were launched after careful research, development, testing and positive feedback. The product made its debut appearance at the ESUK Grassroots

unaffiliated championships at Arena UK, where horses and their riders headed into the ring to sparkle in front of the Horse & Country TV cameras.

Glamourati’s glitter quartermarking kits start at £19.99 and include everything you need to decorate your horse or pony with full instructions. Kits, accessories, stencils and custom designs are available for home application from www.glamouratiuk.co.uk

Matching rider kits are also available – perfect for horse-loving children and teenagers to display their passion with sparkle and flair. As well as this being a fun and decorative product, we can convert most logos and team names into the special adhesive stencils we use, allowing quartermarking to effectively become ‘quartermarketing’

PREPARING FOR YOUR DISCIPLINE

Horse riding is a fun and challenging sport that requires discipline, dedication, and a lot of hard work. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting out, it’s essential to prepare yourself and your horse properly before entering any competition or event.

The first step to preparing for your horse discipline is to understand the requirements of your chosen discipline. Different disciplines require different skills, equipment, and techniques, so it’s important to do your research and learn as much as you can about your chosen discipline. Some of the most popular horse disciplines in the UK include dressage, show jumping, eventing, and endurance riding, each with its own unique set of rules and challenges.

Now you know your disciplines requirements, it’s time to invest in the proper equipment. This includes everything from the right type of saddle and bridle to protective gear for both you and your horse. Good quality equipment is essential for both safety and performance, so don’t skimp on this step. Make sure you have everything you need well in advance of any competitions or

events.

A well-planned training schedule is essential for preparation. This should include a combination of both physical and mental training for both you and your horse. A good training plan should be progressive and challenging, but also realistic and achievable. Consider working with a qualified trainer or coach to help you develop a training plan that meets your specific needs and goals.

Fitness is key for both you and your horse, this means paying attention to your own fitness levels as well as your horse’s. Incorporate regular exercise into your routine, including cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Make sure your horse is also getting enough exercise, both in the form of riding and other physical activities such as turnout and lunging.

Before you can excel at your chosen

discipline, you need to master the basics. This includes everything from proper grooming and horse care to basic riding techniques such as position, balance, and control. Don’t overlook the importance of the basics, as they form the foundation for more advanced skills and techniques.

In addition to physical fitness and skill, developing a mental edge is essential for success. This means staying focused,

confident, and mentally prepared both during training and competition. Practice techniques such as visualization, positive self-talk, and goal setting to help you stay mentally sharp and focused.

Proper nutrition is always important for both you and your horse, Make sure you’re getting enough of the right nutrients to fuel your training and performance; you could consider working with a qualified nutritionist or dietician to help you develop a healthy eating plan. Don’t overlook the importance of proper nutrition for your horse as well, including feeding a balanced diet and providing access to clean water and high-quality forage.

Rest and recovery are just as important as training. Making sure you’re getting enough sleep and taking rest days to allow your body and mind to recover from training. This will also apply to your horse. Make sure you are both getting enough quality rest and recovery time between workouts and competitions, also ensuring that the rest time is in a comfortable environment for your horse be it in the field or stable.

If a horse is stabled after exercise, you may

want to consider which bedding/flooring choice offers the most support and comfort. There are many options from rubber matting, straw, shavings and pellets, which all offer a variety of benefits. For example, Strawmax designed to combine the best of loose straw and wood pellets – the two most popular types of bedding after purpose-made shavings. Straw pellets are rated by equine industry experts as more absorbent than wood pellets and last longer.

They muck out easily with little waste, which dramatically reduces the muckheap, and they compost in just a few weeks. Strawmax is made from 100% natural, locally sourced high-quality straw, and it combines all the equine health benefits you would expect from Bedmax shavings, along with exceptional ease of use, economy and convenience. Owners who have used it have praised its very high levels of absorbency and low levels of dust, and its long life and low wastage, offering an ideal choice of bedding for your horses stable.

Finally, it’s important to remember that good horsemanship is essential when owning and looking after horses in any horse

discipline. Treat your fellow owners and their horses with respect and kindness, ensuring you enjoy your sport to its max.

STRAWMAX

6-8 bags of STRAWMAX make a full bed 20-24cms deep in a standard 12 x 12 stable.

A bucket of water per bag will swell them to 3 x volume but still leave them super absorbent to soak up urine. Maintaining anoptimum bed should only require about 1 bag per week.

Feeding for a change in workload

For most horses the move from the colder, darker winter months to the longer days of spring and summer can mean an increase in work and for their owners signals the start of the competition season. With many owners improving their horse’s fitness in preparation for busy weekends out and about at shows, it is important to assess what they are fed and look at what adjustments can be made to provide a good start to build from throughout the year.

Allen & Page Nutritionist Sarah Day MSc discusses what to take into consideration when feeding for a change in work.

Whilst our first instinct when increasing our horse’s workload is to immediately change their feed it can be helpful to keep them on their current diet and ensure the amount fed would still provide a balanced diet including vitamins and minerals. As you do more with your horse you may find they struggle with enough energy as you do more with them. It is important to be aware that initially your horse’s lack of energy could be due to a lack of

fitness, and this shouldn’t call for an immediate dramatic change in feed. Give them chance to regain their fitness before looking to adapt their diet.

As you build their fitness and increase their work it is important to look at the type of energy the feed provides and understand the type of energy they need. Starch and sugar are quick release energy sources that are quickly digested and absorbed. For some horses this type of energy can be helpful if they are economic with their energy, however for others these ingredients can cause a sudden peak in blood sugar levels, which could cause fizzy behaviour sometimes seen when feeding a traditional cereal-based feed. Quick release energy sources could be helpful for horses needing short sharp bursts of energy such as Showjumpers or those competing in Pony Club games. Fibre and oil ingredients are digested at a slower rate and provide more constant slow-release energy sources which can help provide ‘focused’ energy for your horse, ideal for those competing in One Day Events or taking part in an Endurance ride.

Our Barley & Molasses Free Range has the added benefit that it can be thought of as a ‘stepping stone range, where depending on your horse’s body weight and energy

For more information on feeding visit www.allenandpage.com or call our friendly and helpful nutrition helpline on 01362 822 902

requirements they can move and up down within the range. For example, if you fed a lower energy feed through the winter, such as Fast Fibre, due to your horse’s reduced workload they could take a ‘step’ up to Cool & Collected for additional energy as they do more through spring and summer.

If your horse’s workload reduced through winter their muscle tone may have naturally declined as they’ve not been using their muscles in the same way. Alongside providing sufficient energy levels it is important to note how much protein and the quality of the protein the feed provides. Protein quality is determined by amino acid content; higher quality proteins provide a better range of necessary amino acids; beans and linseed are good sources of high-quality protein. Protein is important in the diet of the horse to provide building blocks for structures within the body, in particular muscle. It is important to remember muscle can only develop alongside correct exercise. Our Muscle & Focus is a performance feed providing slow-release stamina-type energy for harder working horses that contains a good level of high-quality protein sources to help with topline and muscle development and maintenance, alongside plenty of gut support too.

LEADING A HORSE TO WATER

Sandra Murphy BSc (Hons) Equine Sports Science, discusses how to keep your horse hydrated.

Equine Nutritional Hydrotherapy is a system that allows uptake of adequate hydration using good quality fibre nutrition to balance body fluids. It allows the horse to take on the fluid in large amounts safely, efficiently, voluntarily and non-invasively. Most ENH diets replace the traditional grain-based feeding systems by using traditional forage in various forms from soaked hay to soaked forage pellets to the new innovative concept of a complete liquid fibre diet or liquid fibre drinks for horses.

EXTREME HOT WEATHER

If practical, provide your horse with shelter in the heat of the day and if possible keep them in during the day and put them out at night when it is much cooler and there are fewer flies about. Horses that are old or sick may require some special management, however, the young, dark-coloured, unclipped, and overweight need not struggle if they are kept well hydrated by way of ENH, to increase the availability of fluid which will support good thermoregulation.

Young, dark-coloured, or unclipped horses do not have performance issues or die in the wild because the temperature rises, they will naturally seek shade or shelter from the sun in some way. They will only struggle if their body fluid balance is low and therefore they are not able to regulate their temperature effectively. Sweating is a necessary function that horses use to cool down as it allows evaporation of moisture from the surface of the skin, however, to produce sweat, horses need to possess adequate fluid within the body for this function to work effectively, therefore being optimally hydrated allows the horse to utilise this natural function.

EXTREME COLD WEATHER

Mother nature provides a horse with a double-layered insulating, waterproof fur coat in the winter, however, it is best to also provide your horse with some type of shelter from the extreme cold, wind, rain and snow. This

VETS - HYDRATION

may come in the form of a stable, field shelter, overhanging trees or a rug. However, rugs should be used only when necessary as rugs can cause more problems if they are used in excess.

A horse can generate a lot of heat whilst eating hay/haylage as bacteria in the cecum ferments the fibre, therefore if a horse is eating adlib in his field, or in his stable, he will generate adequate warmth for him to be comfortable, a light weight stable rug may be used as the horse’s natural movement is restricted, but if he is rugged up too much, he will be unable to cool down and may sweat constantly under his rugs in an effort to cool himself down, however, this sweat cannot evaporate therefore his thermoregulation function cannot work and he could suffer heat stroke. Clipping horses in the winter means that you can work up a sweat but the horse can dry off a lot quicker reducing the risk of the horses getting cold, however, this is one very good reason to use rugs as their natural coats have been removed.

Rugging, therefore, needs to be appropriate to the conditions, however, it must be remembered that horses are able to withstand far lower temperatures than we can and therefore when we are ‘feeling cold’ it does not mean that the horse is ‘feeling cold’ and they can tolerate much lower temperatures for a lot longer.

Dehydration can be a big problem in the winter as fresh grass at 15% dry matter, is being replaced by conserved forage such as hay and haylage at 85% dry matter. It takes on average 15 litres of saliva to masticate and swallow 7 kg of hay, so if water troughs are frozen over and water is difficult to obtain, you can see why this could become a problem. If a horse is dehydrated and cannot produce enough saliva, then he may well stop eating because he cannot swallow, this may reduce the heat generated from the cecum and the horse may get cold and also may become prone to colic. There is an advantage to feeding an ENH diet in the winter and this is not only to get more good quality forage in but it can also be fed with warm water, making it more appetising to the horse and encouraging more uptake of fluid

ACCLIMATISATION TO HOT WEATHER CONDITIONS

It is best to avoid training in the midday sun, training is best carried out in the early morning or later in the evening, however, if you have to train or compete in extreme heat, make sure your horses are not carrying a deficit of hydration. 

You can use ENH diets before, during and after training or competing. If ENH diets are used on a daily basis, the body fluids can be kept to an optimum with no deficits being carried over. However, because of their liquid nature immediate replacement of body fluids is possible without the need to deplete the essential body fluid. ENH diets can be fed to horses safely prior to being loaded onto transport to provide natural fuel and hydration to replace any body fluid used whilst travelling therefore on arrival the horse has not depleted its body fluids. As much as 10 – 15 ltrs can be fed before travelling to ensure that the horse arrives at the venue in top condition without any loss of body weight.

TRAVELLING

Horses can lose between 3 – 6 ltrs (3 – 6 kg) of body fluid per hour whilst travelling this could mean up to 24 ltrs on a 4-hour journey. There are many ways of increasing uptake of fluid such as soaking hay, or more old-fashioned and strange methods such as using electrolytes daily or the night before, or even trying to get a horse to drink through a hole in an inner tube stretched over a bucket!

It is therefore very important for performance that horses are not depleted of body fluids as they would be at a distinct disadvantage if not fully recovered prior to competing. Horses are given up to 10 ltrs of an ENH diet prior to departure and again during a travelling to arrive at their venue with minimal depletion and any recovery required from travelling is quick and efficient when offered a liquid ration on arrival.

WARMING UP

Once your horse is fully hydrated then warming up can be carried out as usual, however, limit the time spent warming up to conserve energy for the actual competition. If the horse is on an ENH diet then it will have adequate fluid and nutrients to replace the

electrolytes lost in sweat and the fluid lost from its body and the advantage of being on an ENH diet is that fluid can be replaced after warming up and throughout the day, easily and efficiently.

COMPETING

If your horse is fully hydrated, then a lack of performance due to dehydration is not an issue, therefore there is no need to accept that your horses may not achieve the same performance levels as they are used to. Horses that are not fully hydrated or those who are carrying over hydration deficits (dehydration) may lack performance but horses on ENH diets have an advantage in

this respect.

Feeding a daily ENH ration allows optimum hydration and can be topped up at any time during competition. Bearing in mind also that horses should be grazing for 16hrs per day, ENH diets also supplies the bacteria in the cecum with a constant flow of good fibre nutrition throughout the day, keeping the digestive system functioning efficiently and healthily.

WATER

Fresh water should always be available, that goes without saying, however, the difficulty in getting horses to drink when they need it has been a century-old problem. 

Horse psychology means that they may not take up fluid when under stress as they are prey animals, which could mean whilst travel or at competitions when they need it the most, we just haven’t been able to get enough in. This is mainly due to their very strong ‘fight or flight instinct which is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system.

Flavouring water or adding apples may not overcome this instinct as it is still water and may only be taken in small amounts to quench the animal’s thirst and not to replenish the animal’s physiological requirements. The old method of adding electrolytes to the water may have an effect; however, horses are reluctant to drink water with a high concentration of salts dissolved in it. However, ENH works with the horse’s very powerful instinct to forage which overrides the thirst response

governed by the sympathetic nervous system which does allow them to graze on the move. Therefore as ENH works as a forage source rather than a drink, it uses highly palatable fibre (which carries large amounts of fluid) to encourage voluntary uptake of fluid to not only quench the thirst but also balance the body fluids very quickly efficiently and safely. That is why 98% of horses will uptake ENH diets where ever and whenever it is offered which puts you in control of fluid uptake.

COOLING DOWN

The most effective way to cool down is to use mid to cold water to hose down or to ‘slosh’ on the horse, however, the effective use of cooling fans and misting machines have become the norm at some top performance events or in hot climates. However making sure the horse has enough hydration in the first place by providing an ENH diet before it is necessary helps to preload fluid into the digestive

system, allowing the horse to regulate its own thermoregulation from within which is natural and extremely important.

Traditionally, after strenuous exercise horses should be offered a period of time to reduce heavy breathing before being offered large amounts of cold water as this may cause the horse to go into shock and free water may flood the system, however, ENH diets can be offered relatively quickly only approximately 20% is free water to quench thirst whereas about 80% is attached to soluble fibre so passes safely further into the digestive system to increase the hindgut reservoir. This allows the horse the ability to draw upon this reservoir for thermoregulation from within as well as cooling down on the outside helping to reduce the body temperature and lower the heart rate safely aiding a faster recovery.

Don’t let the extreme weather ruin your performance, this new concept is at the cutting edge of progress and should be embraced as the new way forward for natural equine nutrition and hydration.

Helping both you and your horse!

At Devon Haylage, we strive to do our absolute best for both horses and their owners by producing a forage that ticks everyone’s boxes! After all, a healthy horse starts with forage and a healthy horse means a happy owner!

devonhaylage.co.uk 01404 813100

How can Devon Haylage help my horse to perform at its best?

When we look in more detail into how haylage can help all horses, we can see that it’s not just about the dust free qualities.

1. The feeding of haylage on a long-term basis rather than switching to haylage when needed (e.g. at an event or when respiratory problems do occur), can help to prevent any respiratory issues from occurring in the first place. Some respiratory issues could go undetected but may be affecting the horse ‘beneath the surface’ and only come to light once clinical signs are seen.

2. Haylage is a slow-release feed and so can help to sustain energy levels when you really need them for example during periods of extra exertion at events or on long rides. The reliance on hard feed for adequate energy levels can be reduced thus reducing excitable behaviour.

3. During the excitability of an event or show, some horses may be reluctant to eat hay. The act of chewing has been shown to be relaxing, especially if the

horse can eat with a low head carriage. Our haylage is very appealing and tempting to picky eaters. A relaxed horse is a happy horse, and a happy horse performs well!

4. When a horse chews, saliva is produced acting to buffer the stomach against high acid levels which may become a problem when low levels of fibre are consumed. Fibre is also the essential aspect of all horses’ diets, needed to maintain hind gut health and reduce the risk of ulcers developing.

5. Finally, conveniently packed 20kg bales like Devon Haylage are ideal to take away for shows and events as each bale is cut into four distinct quarters, creates minimal mess and can be stored outside freeing up space in the lorry!

At Devon Haylage, we are dedicated to producing the best possible haylage for your horse with customer satisfaction being paramount. The feeding of our haylage not only

provides your horse with multiple health benefits, but a pallet delivery direct to your yard also makes your life easier. We are pleased to offer very competitively priced direct pallet delivery of 35 bales to most parts of the UK. You can also have a mixture of haylage types on the pallet should you have horses with differing tastes or nutritional requirements. Our haylage is renowned for being of high consistent quality which reduces the worry and inconvenience of dusty batches of hay, whilst ensuring you never run out if frequent trips to a supplier is required. All our haylage types are nutritionally tested every year so you know exactly what you are feeding. By using the mineral ratios provided on the reports, this helps you to formulate bespoke feeding regimes using targeted minerals to get the very best from your horse without the unnecessary use of hard feed. Sugar and starch content in forage is increasingly becoming the focus for many horse owners as they strive to find a quality forage with known levels which can be safely fed to sensitive horses and ponies. Our thorough nutritional testing puts customers’ minds to rest as all our haylage types come in at under 10% combined sugar and starch as fed. Our customers have reported substantial health benefits in their horses with the regular use of our haylage, not to mention the peace of mind a direct delivery brings.

From a business or financial point of view, many of the luxurious home additions that support our interests – e.g. horse riding –surprisingly may not add value. They do however attract a high-end clientele to future house sales, and for the right buyer, can clinch a sale. If you’re in the position to create luxury, interest-based additions to a

It is important if you’re considering buying an equestrian property, essentially a very high-value investment, to understand your outlook on risk, and take advice on the long-term possibilities for your investment. Although purchasing a high value equestrian property may be an option for some, this dream may not be a reality for others. There are still options to suit your needs, such as renting a yard or field, ensuring your vision is not compromised.

The choice between buying or renting not only applies to properties but also your luxury equine items. For example, the option to splurge on your very own horse lorry, means you can modify to meet your personal requirements, adding a living space will increase value to the horse lorry whilst creating an area for you to enjoy whilst out on the round. However, renting a horse lorry for your days out, offers an instant means of travel, but eliminates the additional costs such as upkeep and insurance.

Travelling to an equestrian centre offering cross country courses, show jumps and indoor arenas certainly is a fun filled day out this can be achieved by simply hiring the facilities for your chosen time for a minimal fee, allowing you to pack up and go when

you’re ready, alleviating any maintenance costs. The alternative is to build your own equestrian facilities at home. If you do have enough land to be able to ride, why not build your own cross-country course, arena and

RENTING A YARD – THE PROS

• There are generally fewer upfront costs, e.g. like mortgage fees and stamp duty. (Although deposits will be required).

• Your monthly rental payments should stay fairly stable, unlike non-fixed-rate mortgage payments.

• The landlord generally pays for repairs.

• Renting can be faster than buying, if you want to move to a property quickly, perhaps if your horse’s livery yard has closed down, for example.

• If the property’s value goes down, there’s no risk of losing your investment.

• You may be able to rent a bigger property (e.g. with land and stables) than you could afford to buy.

Manufactured from the highest quality natural rubber, our products provide a safe and comfortable environment for horses.

Enhancing Safety, Comfort & Biosecurity:

EASYFIX Diamond Deluxe Stable Matting

EASYFIX Equine launched a newly designed rubber matting system in early 2022. The patented design is fully sealed to allow for extra biosecurity and combines grip with enhanced comfort.

The seamless design is not only bio secure, hygienic and extremely comfortable, but it also provides the ideal environment for your horse.

It is a uniquely designed rubber matting solution which ensures maximum grip whilst remaining extremely easy to sweep and clean. Traditionally, some stable mats have offered high grip options, however have always been difficult to clean and maintain. This superbly designed mat offers the best of both worlds. Diamond Deluxe Stable Mat and Diamond Top Memory Foam are DLG Certified.

Diamond Deluxe Stable Mat is now also available with an 8mm PU Latex Foam Mattress underneath for additional comfort.

Benefits

 Prevents Injury: When combined with our wall matting system, the Diamond Deluxe prevents cuts, grazes and capped hocks normally associated with concrete floors.

 Aids Rest & Recovery: The matting system creates an optimum environment for rest and recovery from both exercising and injury.

 Hygienic & Bio secure: The rubber mats are bonded to create a fully sealed, hygienic and non-porous floor. The glue used ensures that mats are permanently sealed to the floor and will not lift or move.

 Excellent Grip: Provides an excellent grip under foot when lying down, getting up or rolling over.

 Insulating Effect: The soft rubber provides thermal insulation and an anti-fatigue surface.

 Cost Effective: Huge saving reductions on shavings and straw, as the rubber matting allows you to significantly reduce the amount of bedding that is required and the amount of labour involved.

I have my horse walker installed with EASYFIX Equine horse walker tiles and London 52’s stable has the Diamond Deluxe stable matting fitted.
I am really happy with the products and delighted that London 52 has a comfortable stable to live in

Do you know your payload before you drive to

an event?

It is very easy to overload a 3500kg horsebox, and even a 7500kg one, as most people don’t take into account passengers, tack, water, hay, and these add to the payload considerably.

For example, an empty 3500kg horsebox normally weighs about 2500kg, leaving 1000kg for the driver and passenger, horse, tack, etc. Many of these horseboxes are stalled for two horses, and that can be a big problem. If you are overloaded and have an accident, your insurance will be invalidated and you could be facing a number of offences, both overloading and licence ones. In recent years, the DVSA has found that more than 80% of LCV’s stopped on the roadside on suspicion of overloading, are in fact overweight.

Why Uprating

You have a limited payload capacity and wish to carry an extra horse or equipment. You don’t want to buy a newer, bigger horsebox so you can save money by converting your current vehicle. You want to avoid a large fine by DVSA.

What to do if you are overloaded.

The first thing is to weigh your horsebox FULLY LOADED with your horse(s), tack, water, food, and passengers so that you know where you stand. Remember to weigh each axle individually as you may find that whilst you may be under the Gross Vehicle Weight, you have actually overloaded the rear axle. This is very common in lightweight horseboxes. Fortunately SvTech can help, and is keen to promote its uprating service for lightweight horseboxes (3500kg), whereby the horsebox can gain an extra 200-300kg in payload. This provides vital payload capability when carrying an extra horse and/ or tack and offers peace of mind for the owner.

We can start the ball rolling by asking customers to fill in an enquiry form and send it back with photos of the Horsebox plate, the weight ticket and Registration Document.

SvTech has carried out extensive work and testing on lightweight models and has covered uprates for most lightweight vehicles. It is worth noting that some uprates require modifications or changes to the vehicle’s braking, tyres and/or suspension, for which SvTech provides a simple purpose-built suspension assister kit. This will take between 1-2 hours for you to fit. Your horsebox will then go for a formal inspection to bring it into the ‘Goods’ category, and, depending on the vehicle’s age, may also require fitment of a speed limiter, for which there are one or two options.

Most importantly, vehicles registered after May 2002 must be fitted with manufacturer’s ABS, if going above 3500kg.
