Bell-ringing in Yealmpton

St Bartholomew’s Church Bell Ringing Competition : Saturday 3rd June

Would you like to get involved and help to keep this wonderful tradition alive in our village?

Our tower has been selected to hold our local Deanery Ringing Competition at 3pm for about 2 to 3 hours. This is the start of a three part competition for the Champions of Devon. The second part will take place in South Devon and the final will be between the Winners of South Devon and North Devon at a given tower.

We will hopefully be entering a team, but we are finding this more difficult these days due to a lack of bell ringers. So if anyone would like to learn or if you are a bell ringer who has just moved in to the village, we would be very pleased to see you any Thursday evening from 7.30 – 9pm.

This is a very friendly tower and you would be made very welcome.

NB: We will be ringing for the King’s Coronation on May 6th

“I love the Shibashi experience, so worthwhile in terms of looser limbs, breathing, social and quite the laugh on occasions too! What not to like? Well done you for bringing us all together, we’re all benefitting from your passion (yours and Rachel’s). Thank you both.”

From a Qigong Practice participant

Qigong (pronounced Chi Gung) is a form of moving T’ai Chi that is practised all over the world by millions of people of all ages and abilities. The benefits are felt after only a few regular sessions. Members of our group have been meeting weekly in Stray Park since the end of lockdown. Up to 20 persons arrive at the park, coming from all directions including those from neighbouring villages. Sessions start with a range of gentle mobilising and stretching exercises. The aim is to improve awareness from the top of the head (the Bai Hui) to the bottom of the feet (the Yong Quan). Sometimes, the movements are typical of the sort of warm up exercises that you will see in the gym, but they are always slow and gentle and precisely executed within a range that is manageable for each individual. A great advantage of the activities undertaken during our one hour session is that each person is able to adjust their practice in a way that can be

achieved comfortably. In time, individuals find that both their range of movements and their enjoyment increase.

Joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments are all designed to keep moving. When we move, bending, turning, rolling, spiralling and stretching our limbs we challenge our balance and improve our core strength. Recently, our preliminary warm up sessions have included some sinuous limb and spinal movements called Silk Reeling and Snake Coiling. In themselves these actions loosen up stiff, tight parts that benefit from simple, gentle and repetitive movements.

The particular form of Qigong that we practise in Yealmpton is called Shibashi (a Chinese word meaning 18). There are 18 exercises in a complete Qigong Set. An important benefit arises from focussing on one’s breathing during each movement. One’s breath should be gentle, slow, smooth and even. The aim is to regulate the timing and depth of one’s breath so that six repetitions of each form take one minute. And with a total of 18 forms one set of Qigong Shibashi will take 18 minutes. Although the movements themselves are very precise they are not difficult.

The real benefits of Qigong Shibashi are realised when during one’s practice (in our group or individually at home) all movements are slow, precise, purposeful and flowing, breathing at the appropriate rate and using a technique called Dan Tien Breathing. Attending to one’s breath and breathing is recognised to have many benefits that not only include improved lung function but also may calm the busy mind. Ultimately when one is able to focus one’s breathing one may experience one of the

12 Qigong Sessions in Yealmpton

benefits of meditation and mindfulness. Those who practise Qigong Shibashi in this way report a calm and untroubled state of mind.

If you would like to experience T’ai Chi Qigong in Yealmpton you will need to join a beginners’ group. You will not be able to just turn up to a regular session unless you have been to one or more beginners’ sessions where you will have learned some dos and don’ts as well as the basics of practising Qigong effectively and safely. Beginners’ sessions take place occasionally and when there are enough interested persons to form a beginners’ group. If you are interested in attending a beginners’ session you may contact me via email.

This is a reconstruction of a painted scroll known as the Daoyin Tu. The original silk scroll is dated 168 BCE and shows coloured drawings of 44 figures in standing and sitting postures performing Daoyin (guiding and pulling) exercises. It is believed to be the earliest physical exercise chart in the world. Today, over 2,000 years later we still use similar charts here in the Yealmpton T’ai Chi Qigong Shibashi groups to inform our practice!

Yealmpton Community Association News

Writing this on a cold, crisp April morning, it is hard to imagine the warmer days of May have arrived; but I’m staying optimistic that we will enjoy all the bank holidays in the sunshine!

Thursday May 4th sees the District and Parish Council Elections take place at the Community Centre, it is usually a busy day at the Centre especially around School drop off / pick up. It would be best to avoid these times to vote, if you can at all. Remember also that this year you will require valid photographic ID in order to register your vote. More information can be found on the SHDC Website. Following on from that major event in the diary we have another one!Sunday 7th May Yealmpton will be having its very own STREET PARTY! It’s a party for the whole of Yealmpton, young and old near or far. Please come along and celebrate the King’s Coronation 12 8pm on Market Street, where there will be live singing, music and much much more.

Are your children craving more creative time? Then Spacefruit Art Club might be just what they need...

Local artist, Becky Crawford, will be running exciting 2D and 3D Mixed Media Art Workshops in Newton Ferrers from May. Over the past year Becky has been running after school Art Clubs at Newton Ferrers and Sparkwell schools and will now be opening these to the public. She says “The children who have been attending Art Club so far have all come away with amazing pieces of art and have all felt incredibly proud of themselves.” “The workshops will cover drawing and painting to collage and clay and everything in between! We will look at examples of artists work at the start of the sessions for inspiration. Some projects will last one session but others may be spread out over 2 or 3 so please check diaries before booking. The first workshop is to make a clay head with hollow horns to stick found objects into…” Even in the very best of schools, art has had to be squeezed to a minimum which means that those children who thrive on creativity and imagination are lacking in their education. Art also provides a healthy means of self expression.

The workshops are suitable for children aged 7 and up, although under 7s are also welcome when accompanied by an adult. Selected Saturday afternoons and dates during the summer holidays will be available to book via Becky’s website www.myspacefruit.com . For more details and to book please go to Shop and Art Workshops. More dates will be added so please add yourself to the mailing list to be kept informed.

At Café Church the aim is to explore life’s issues from a Christian faith perspective in a relaxed café atmosphere. It is centred on the belief that everyone’s experience of coming to church should be enjoyable and welcoming.

Café Church was a church movement in the 1990’s which pioneered a new way to gather and build community. It became very popular and attracted people who would not think about coming to a traditional church service. Now many churches throughout the UK regularly use this model as a ‘fresh expression’ of what it is to be church. It is simply taking what you enjoy about going to a café – sitting together, eating and drinking, talking and sharing – and shaping worship around this.

At Yealmpton Community Methodist Church, we are excited to be holding ‘Café Church’

style services once a month – the next being Sunday 2nd April at 10.15am for 10.30.

On arrival you’ll see the church laid out to look more like a café space, with tables and chairs and refreshments being served. There will be prayers and sung worship, with words projected on a screen. We look at the Bible together, and then have a go at answering questions on our tables. It is not about who knows the most – but rather sharing our thoughts and ideas, as we believe everyone has something to offer. Sometimes we will play a game or have a quiz – we want to have fun together, as well as offer a space where all can learn together and grow closer to understanding the love of Jesus. We hope that those not part of our fellowship may feel this service could be one that is worth a try! You will be most welcome and we look forward to making your friendship.
