Aquatic Facilities

The 2018-19 campaign marked the West Virginia University swimming and diving team’s final season competing in the WVU Natatorium, which has served as the home of WVU since 1975. The Mountaineers celebrated the final competition in the Natatorium on January 12, 2019, when WVU defeated TCU, 441-156, in a Big 12 dual meet. Following the victory, alumni joined the current team on the pool deck for a final singing of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” circling the competition pool.

In 2019-20, the WVU swimming and diving teams moved into their new home at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park, a brand new, state-of-the-art facility that opened in the fall of 2019. Initial planning for the new complex began in the fall of 2015, when nine public entities, including West Virginia University, committed to collaborate in building a state-of-the-art aquatic and track complex at Mylan Park.

Recognizing the need for an Olympicsized, 50-meter pool, the community and WVU worked together to make this possible. A $48 million facility, the Aquatic and Track Complex at Mylan Park is a community facility for all ages. It now serves as the home to WVU’s swimming and diving, cross country and track and field teams. Construction began on the complex in August 2017.

The aquatic facility is approximately 75,000 square-feet with a 50-meter competition pool and seating for 1,200 spectators. The aquatic center will include a diving pool and tower, a warming pool, therapeutic pool, a family water park, an outdoor sun deck, two wet classrooms, a cardio fitness room, training space, locker rooms and multipurpose rooms for meetings and special occasions.

In the team’s inaugural season at the Aquatic Center, the Mountaineers hosted nine home meets, including the 2020 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship and the 2020 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, both of which came to Morgantown for the first time in program history.

IN THE Spotlight

Choosing to become a Mountaineer studentathlete is special.

Without a professional sports team in the state, West Virginia residents and fans throughout the region love West Virginia University athletics.

The Mountaineers have the unique opportunity to represent themselves, their teammates and their University to news media, alumni, friends, family and the general public. The interaction with these groups is also part of their educational process.

A PROGRAM championship

Year in and year out, the West Virginia University swimming and diving teams compete at a high level in hopes of obtaining the ultimate program goals of sending student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, as well as finishing at the top of the conference championship.

West Virginia broke five school records during the 2021 campaign, including a pair of records during the Big 12 Championships. The Mountaineers earned 11 total medals, including four silver and seven bronze at Conference Championships.

WVU qualified eight divers at the 2021 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships. Jacob Cardinal Tremblay made his second consecutive NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship appearance, while Owen Johns, Jake Low and PJ Lenz made their first appearance. The four divers qualified for NCAA Championships marked the first time in program history that multiple divers competed at a single championship.

Senior, David Dixon, earned his bid to Nationals for the fourth consecutive season, becoming the first Mountaineer from the men’s team to do so. Dixon earned a 12th-place finish in the 200 butterfly to earn Honorable Mention All-American honors, becoming the 36th All-American and the 27th different Mountaineer from the men’s team to earn All-American status.

David Dixon represented WVU at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Swimming Trials, competing in the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.

With past success to celebrate and large goals for the future, WVU will continue to make the push toward training promising student-athletes into national contenders.

BIG 12 Conference

West Virginia enters its 10th season in one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences, whose focus is on stability, strength and success.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby’s leadership among the 10 member schools continues to foster national recognition in the conference in academics and athletics.

Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 37 million people. More than 4,200 studentathletes from across the United States and around the world compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Big 12 Conference.

The Big 12 is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success.

Whether in the pool, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and meet officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

The Big 12 has served as a home to nearly 100 individual National Champions over the years, as well as multiple Team National Champions.

ADMISSION AND APPLICATION TIMELINE

Our test-optional policy means that students can apply for undergraduate admission without an ACT or SAT score. However, we do encourage that students submit scores if available and offer the option to submit after receiving a decision. WVU superscores and offers multiple options for submitting test scores. Applications are processed beginning Aug. 15 for admission the following fall. WVU has a rolling admissions policy, and there is no official application deadline. For graduate admission, each graduate program sets its own admissions requirements and deadlines.

16TH SEASON AT WEST VIRGINIA

A pair of program records were broken during the season, including sophomore William Mullen’s record-breaking performance at Big 12s in the men’s 1650. Mullen touched the wall in 15:21.57 topping a 39-year record set by Craig Cooper in 1983. Additionally, fifth-year Ana Zortea broke the women’s 100 back, as she bested Amelie Currat’s time of 53.50 (2018), by touching in 53.41.

Riggs’ teams have continuously excelled in the classroom and the 2021-22 season was no different. WVU had three swimmers, and two divers, be named as 2022 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Recipients – seniors Josh Madzy and Abigail Riggs, and junior Conrad Molinaro. Thirty-five Mountaineers were named to the 2022 Academic All-Big 12 Swimming & Diving Team; 29 were named to the first team and two student-athletes earned the honor with a 4.0 GPA.

Riggs continues to lead his teams outside of the pool as both squads were named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) during the fall 2020 and the spring 2021 semesters. Alongside the CSCAA honors, 40 Mountaineers were named to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Swimming and Diving Team; of those 40, 34 were named to the first team and eight student-athletes earned the honor with a 4.0 GPA, the most among other Big 12 schools. Additionally, Kayla Gagnon and Ryan Van Wyk, were named recipients of the 2021 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement award.

2019-20

In more than a decade at West Virginia University, Vic Riggs has helped the WVU swimming and diving program climb to national prominence. With an academic support system designed around the swimming and diving program, Riggs, who enters his 16th season at the helm in 2022-23, has built a team that continues to be recognized nationally for success in the classroom.

Throughout his coaching tenure at WVU, Riggs has coached 35 NCAA qualifiers, 15 NCAA All-Americans, 19 Academic AllAmericans, eight Big 12 Scholar-Athletes of the Year and 18 Olympic Trials qualifiers.

LAST SEASON

Riggs and his teams spent their third season at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park and played host to the 2022 Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships for the second time in school history. The 2021-22 campaign was highlighted by fifth-year David Dixon earning his fifth-consecutive NCAA bid, the only Mountaineer in program history to do so.

At the conference meet, in total, the Mountaineers combined to earn 13 medals, including one gold, four silvers and eight bronze. Nine members of the team earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team, while 24 were recognized on the All-Big 12 Second Team.

2020-21

Riggs’ led West Virginia to another successful season, despite being shortened, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Big 12 Championships, the men earned their sixth consecutive second-place finish, while the women finished fourth. Additionally, nine Mountaineers earned a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team, while 19 were recognized on the All-Big 12 Second Team.

Emily Haimes, Harna Minezawa, Jacqueline McCutchan and Jordan Buechler earned silver in the 200 freestyle relay, at Big 12’s, setting a new program record of 1:31.05. Including the 200 free relay, WVU collected 11 medals at the conference meet, including four silver and seven bronze.

The season was highlighted by senior David Dixon earning a bid to the 2021 NCAA Swimming Championships for the fourth consecutive season, becoming the first Mountaineer from the men’s team to do so. At NCAA’s, he finished 12th-place in the 200 butterfly to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors. Additionally, Dixon represented WVU at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Swimming Trials, competing in the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter IM.

It was a historical season for the Mountaineers in 2019-20, as Riggs’ squad moved into its new home at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park, hosting nine home events during the inaugural season. From the team’s first home, mid-season invitational – the WVU Invitational – to the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship’s first-ever visit to Morgantown, the Mountaineers made the most of their first season in the new facility.

At the Big 12 Championship, the men’s team finished second, while the women placed fifth. Riggs’ teams collected 11 total medals at the conference meet, including five silver and six bronze. Twelve members of the squad were named to the All-Big 12 First Team.

Although the 2019-20 postseason was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, four members of the men’s team qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships, including two swimmers in junior David Dixon and freshman Hunter Armstrong. After the cancellation of the championships, the CSCAA Board of Directors altered the selection criteria for All-American distinction; thus, Dixon and Armstrong, along with divers Jacob Cardinal Tremblay and Nick Cover, were selected to the 2020 All-America Team. The honors were the first for Riggs’ team since 2014.

In addition to their success in the pool, 31 Mountaineers were named to the 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Team, with seven student-athletes earning the distinction with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages. Additionally, seniors Ryan Kelly and Jack Portmann were named recipients of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, and the two squads were named CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams in the fall.

2018-19

The men earned their fourth consecutive second-place finish at the 2019 Big 12 Championship, while the women finished in third. The season was highlighted by sophomore David Dixon winning a pair of Big 12 individual championships.

Dixon collected victories in the 100 and 200 butterfly to become the first Mountaineer since 2014 to win multiple titles at the event. He earned All-Big 12 First Team honors for his performance. The Richmond, Virginia, native was one of seven Mountaineer swimmers to earn the honor, while 12 others were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. In all, WVU combined to earn two gold, nine silver and 10 bronze medals at the conference meet.

Three swimmers qualified for the 2019 NCAA Championships, as Dixon and Jake Armstrong represented the men and Morgan Bullock represented the women.

Not only were Riggs’ Mountaineers successful in the pool last season, but they also enjoyed plenty of success in the classroom. Junior Ryan Kelly was named the Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year, marking the fifth consecutive season and the sixth time in seven years WVU has won the conference honor in men’s or women’s swimming and diving. Additionally, 29 Mountaineers landed on the Academic AllBig 12 Team, including 23 on the first team. WVU was once again named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team in 2018-19.

2017-18

Whether it was in the pool or out, West Virginia had a plenty to look back on in 2017-18. The Mountaineers earned a pair of second-place team finishes at the 2018 Big 12 Championship, which included juniors Jake Armstrong and Tristen Di Sibio registering individual conference championships.

Armstrong successfully defended his 100 breaststroke title with a finals time of 52.59 after breaking the school record in the event during prelims (52.11). For Di Sibio, he took home gold in the 200 breaststroke, winning in a time of 1:56.00. The duo’s accomplishments marked the first time since 2014 that WVU won multiple Big 12 titles in the same season.

Under Riggs’ leadership, WVU sent a total of five swimmers to the NCAA Championships. Junior Emma Harris and sophomore Morgan Bullock represented the women’s team, the squad’s first national qualifiers since 2013, while Armstrong and Di Sibio were joined by freshman David Dixon for the men.

Armstrong and Bullock went on to grab honorable mention All-America honors at the national meets. Armstrong placed 14th overall in the 100 breaststroke (52.69), while Bullock finished 15th in the 200 butterfly (1:54.77).

The 2017-18 season also provided the men’s first undefeated dual-meet campaign since 2006-07. On the women’s side, the Mountaineers finished a perfect 2-0 in conference action, including the program’s first victory over Iowa State. Additionally, the two teams combined to break 15 school and six pool records during the 2017-18 season.

WVU again excelled academically. as both teams earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors. For the sixth consecutive season, the Mountaineers also garnered Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, as seniors Amelie Currat and James Koval were awarded the distinction. Currat, along with junior Marah Bieger, also was selected for the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12’s highest academic conference honor.

2016-17

West Virginia saw records fall and a championship won in the 2016-17 season. Headlined by Armstrong’s win in the men’s 100 breaststroke, the Mountaineers claimed one gold medal, 11 silver medals and eight bronze medals at the 2017 Big 12 Championship. In all, 11 members of the swimming and diving teams were named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while 14 others earned second-team recognition. The performances were good enough to push the WVU men to a second-place finish at the conference meet, while the women finished fourth.

Armstrong’s victory marked the sixth Big 12 men’s title and 10th overall since joining the conference in 2013. His time of 53.09 was the second-fastest in program history in the event at the time.

The Mountaineers also tallied a pair of broken records over the course of the year. First, senior Emma Skelley broke the WVU pool record in the 1,650 free at Big 12 vs. Big East Weekend on Oct. 15, 2016. Skelley earned a time of 16:56.11, the best at the WVU Natatorium.

At the Big 12 Championship, sophomore Emma Harris broke the WVU school record in the 200 breast. She earned a time of 2:12.37 in the event.

Away from the pool, WVU swimming and diving had another strong year in the classroom. Both teams earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team accolades and 21 Mountaineers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team. Currat was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and was honored with the Big 12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Additionally, senior Nathan Howells and Koval earned the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Award for their strong work academically.

2015-16

Whether it was succeeding academically, winning a Big 12 title while setting a new Big 12 Championship record or breaking multiple WVU school and pool records, Riggs coached the WVU men’s and women’s teams to a high degree. Four members of the men’s team qualified to compete at the 2016 Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Nebraska. WVU graduate

Bryce Bohman, seniors Andrew Marsh, Max Spencer and junior Nate Carr raced in a total of nine events at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

For the first time in program history, a Mountaineer set a new Big 12 Championship record as Marsh set the mark in the 100 backstroke with a 45.41, taking home the gold medal at the championship meet. Marsh also set a WVU school record in the 100 butterfly, with a prelim time of 46.59 to advance him to the A final. Eighteen Mountaineers earned medals at the four-day championship with eight All-Big 12 First Team performances and 12 All-Big 12 Second Team honors. Riggs coached the Mountaineer men to a second-place finish at the 2016 Big 12 Championship, posting their best finish at the conference championship since joining the Big 12. The women’s squad added a fourth-place finish.

For the second consecutive year, Marsh qualified to compete at the NCAA Men’s

Swimming and Diving Championships. He met qualifying time standards in three events, the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle.

Academically, junior Nathan Howells was named the 2015-16 Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Howells also was named to the 2016 Academic All-District At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The honor was the first for Howells and the sixth award in program history for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at the time. Additionally, 24 members of the team were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Team.

The women’s team earned Scholar All-America Team honors by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) during the fall and spring semesters. Additionally, Taylor Gill of the women’s team was named a recipient of the First Team Academic Momentum Award by the Scholar Baller® program in conjunction with the National Consortium of Academics and Sports (NCAS). She was the first member of the Mountaineer swimming and diving team to receive the Academic Momentum Award. The award recognizes student-athletes who have shown momentous improvements throughout their collegiate careers.

2014-15

The 2014-15 season saw many accomplishments on both the WVU men’s and women’s squads. Riggs coached the men to a third-place finish in the Big 12 Conference and the women to a fourthplace finish. With a team goal of making it back to the NCAA Championships, Tim Squires and Marsh helped accomplish that with successful individual campaigns. Marsh, a junior, qualified in three events, while senior Squires qualified in two events for his second consecutive NCAA appearance.

Fourteen Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 honors at the 2015 Big 12 Championship, including the school-record-setting men’s 400-yard relay team of Marsh, Carr, Ross Glegg and Squires.

In the classroom, the Mountaineers had 26 swimmers and divers earn Academic All-Big 12 honors, nine were earned Scholar All-America accolades by the CSCAA and four were named Academic All-Americans by CoSIDA.

The WVU women’s swimming and diving team recorded the highest GPA in the Big 12 Conference among all swimming and diving programs, for the secondconsecutive year. The Mountaineers also were the only program in the Big 12 to have a 4.0 student-athlete from the men’s and women’s team.

2013-14

In 2013-14, Riggs oversaw perhaps the greatest individual student-athlete performance in a single season in program history. Senior Bryce Bohman became just the second men’s swimmer in WVU history to earn First Team All-America honors at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Bohman set three individual school records (100 back, 200 back, 100 fly), was named the Big 12 Male Swimmer of the Year and earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honors.

Riggs coached the men to a 23rd overall finish at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. He also helped Squires earn Big 12 Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet honors and coached nine student-athletes to CSCAA Individual Scholar All-America recognitions.

His endless devotion to academic success was evident as the women’s team posted the highest team GPA in the Big 12 Conference. The men’s and women’s squad together garnered CSCAA Scholar AllAmerica distinctions.

2012-13

The 2012-13 season was a banner year for academics within the swimming and diving teams.

Eighteen Mountaineers were named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Team. Among those honored, three in the entire conference were nominated with a 4.00 grade point average, all West Virginia student-athletes –David Palley, Sloan Storie and Jenelle Zee.

Palley and Zee also were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 2 At-Large Teams, while Liam McLaughlin was named the inaugural Big 12 Swimming and Diving Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year.

At WVU’s first Big 12 Championships, the women’s team finished second and the men’s team finished third. Rachael Burnett earned the Big 12’s Most Outstanding Swimmer award, winning the 200 free, 500 free and 1,650 free. Mandie Nugent added a win in the 200 fly during the championships. The men’s squad took first in the 400 medley relay and second in the 200 medley relay, while Christopher Brill took second in the 200 breast and third in the 100 breast. Ross Glegg added a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 free and 200 free.

THE BIG EAST YEARS

Riggs had his most successful season as a head coach in 2011-12, leading the women and men to third- and fourth-place finishes at the Big East Championships. For his efforts, he was named the Big East Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year. The team placed 15 members on the all-conference squad with Burnett and Nugent leading the way with seven top-three finishes for the women, while Taylor Camp had three for the men. Burnett was named the Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmer.

Four different women earned a total of seven honorable mention All-America honors at the NCAA Championships as the team placed 26th. Burnett, Nugent, Kata Fodor and Danielle Smith finished 16th in the 800 free relay. Burnett earned the honor twice more, finishing 14th in the 500 free and 11th in the 1650 free, while Nugent took ninth in the 200 fly.

Riggs also sent eight swimmers to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, the most ever from WVU. The Mountaineers were represented in 15 different events during the Trials.

In total, 10 school records, three pool records and five Big East records were broken with Burnett leading the way, slashing four individual and two relay records.

COACHING RECORDS

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY SWIMMING & DIVING

Both squads continued success in the 2010-11 season with the women finishing third at the Big East Championships, while the men finished in fourth place. A total of six school records were broken throughout the season, one being a Big East record.

For the men, Jared Goldthorpe broke the 200 back school record with a 10th-place finish in the NCAA Championships to earn honorable mention All-America status.

The women’s squad saw Burnett and Nugent named the co-Big East Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmers at the Big East Championships. Burnett took wins in both the 500 free and 400 IM at the championships, while finishing sixth in the 200 fly. Nugent won the 200 fly on the final day of competition after setting a new Big East and school record time of 1:56.64 in the preliminary session. Nugent also finished second in the 100 fly and fourth in the 500 free.

The women’s squad earned CSCAA AllAcademic Team honors with Andrews and Callaway being named CSCAA Scholar AllAmericans in 2009 and 2010, while Lindsey Largo and Ashley Malik earned the honor in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

The men’s team was named an AllAcademic Team for the spring 2010 and spring 2011 term. Individually, Brandon Robinson was named a CSCAA Scholar AllAmerican in 2010, while Pablo Marmolejo earned the honor in 2009.

Riggs had an astonishing season in 2009-10, with the women breaking three Big East records, 12 school records and three pools records, while the men broke four school records and two pool records.

At the NCAA Championships, Burnett, Andrews, Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell earned honorable mention AllAmerica honors with their 15th-place finish in the 400 free relay.

Andrews, Burnett, Callaway, Goldthorpe, Nugent and George Farquhar were all individual Big East champions as well.

In 2008-09, there were 11 school records broken for the women’s team and five for the men. The women also sent three athletes to the NCAA Championships, with Michael Walker representing the men, finishing the 400 IM with honorable mention All-America honors. Andrews, Callaway, Largo and Walker were all Big East champions, with Callaway being named women’s Big East Most Outstanding Swimmer at the meet.

The 2008-09 recruiting class also was a best for Riggs and his staff, as the men’s class was ranked 17th nationally and the women 24th.

The Magazine Academic All-American Third Team honors during the 2008-09 season.

In 2007-08, Riggs’ first season, the West Virginia women’s team broke 12 team, three pool and one Big East record. They also had three individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. On the men’s side, the squad broke four pool, three team records and three Big East records, while Kevin Donohue became a First Team AllAmerican. Donohue placed fifth in the 100 breast at the NCAA Championships and helped the Mountaineers to a 33rd place overall finish.

Riggs guided the team to third- and fourth-place finishes at the Big East Championships as well. The Mountaineers had nine individual champions and two relay champions.

Throughout his coaching career, Riggs has coached numerous U.S. National and NCAA Qualifiers, along with 12 Olympic medalists.

SUCCESS AS AN ASSISTANT

Riggs came to West Virginia from Georgia, where he served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs in 2006-07. There, Riggs assisted in daily workouts and designed and implemented the sprint program, while also assisting with the meet lineups.

Prior to his stint at Georgia, Riggs coached at USC under Mark Schubert, guiding numerous Trojan sprinters and breaststrokers to All-America recognition.

In his first year at USC, he worked closely with the distance and mid-distance freestyle and 400 IM athletes. Riggs helped guide Erik Vendt, Kaitlin Sandeno, Lindsay Benko and Kalyn Keller to Olympic berths for their respective 2004 Olympic teams. He also was the recruiting coordinator at USC.

THE CLUB YEARS

Riggs previously served two years as head coach and owner of the Gator Swim Club in Gainesville, Florida. He also served as head coach for the U.S. National Distance Camp in 2000 and 2002.

From 1995-2001, Riggs and his wife, Renee, directed the Nellie Gail Saddleback Valley Gators, coaching novice to Olympiclevel swimmers. Among the athletes Riggs coached during that time was the USC AllAmerican Kaitlin Sandeno, who was a part of the 800 free relay that won a gold medal and broke a world record at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Riggs also served as the age group head coach at Saddleback Valley Aquatics in Lake Forest, California, from 1991-95. He was an assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino from 1990-91 and served as head agegroup coach for Riverside Aquatics in that time. He began his coaching career as the senior assistant at Fullerton Area Sports Team (FAST) in 1989.

PRIOR TO COACHING

Riggs competed at California-Berkeley, earning All-America honors in 1986 and swam on Cal’s second-place NCAA team. He was ranked seventh in the world in the 1,500 free and ninth in the 400 free in 1985. He was in the top 25 in the world in both events in 1984.

A 1985 World University Games participant for the U.S., he was an Olympic Trials qualifier in 1984 and 1988. He was a 28-time qualifier for the U.S. Senior Nationals from 1983-89 and won a junior national title in 1982.

PERSONAL

Riggs and his wife, Renee, have four daughters: Abigail, Kathryn and twins Caroline and Irene.

RICK WEST

Rick West enters his second year as Associate Head Men’s Swimming coach and eighth year with WVU. West assists head coach Vic Riggs in all aspects of the program, including day-to-day operations, recruiting and academics.

During his eight years with West Virginia, West has seen 30 program records and one Big 12 Swimming Championship record, had 12 NCAA Championship qualifiers, seven Big 12 individual champions, six AllAmericans and five Olympic Trial qualifiers. He’s led the team through major milestones – David Dixon became the first Mountaineer to earn five consecutive bids

COACHING EXPERIENCE:

Additionally, West has contributed to the academic success of the Mountaineers as well. The team has had over six Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement recipients, five Big 12 Swimming & Diving Scholar Athletes of the Year, the women have had 29 consecutive semesters of being recognized as a CSCAA Scholar All-America team, while the men have had 10 consecutive semesters, and countless All-Big 12 Scholar Athletes.

Before he was hired in 2015, West was a volunteer coach with the team from 2012-15.

Prior to his time in Morgantown, West served as head coach, as well as Aquatics Director, at Wheeling Jesuit from 2001-02 and 2007-12. He was responsible for the organization, compliance, budgeting and recruiting for the NCAA Division II program in the Appalachian Swimming Conference and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 2002, 2010 and 2011, West was awarded Appalachian Swimming Conference Men’s Coach of the Year.

As an assistant coach at Pitt in 200304, he assisted in coaching the Panthers to their eighth consecutive men’s Big East Conference championship, their 19th title in 22 years. He helped coach the men’s team to the most dual-meet wins (14) in the university’s history in 2003, and he helped the women’s team reach its first winning dual-meet record in four seasons (8-6).

At Duquesne in 2002-03, West led the Dukes to their first ever Atlantic 10 champion swimmer in the school’s 26-year history as head coach. Prior to working with the Dukes, he was an assistant men’s swimming coach at Ohio State in 2002. West was responsible for the recruiting process including scouting, contacting prospects and implementing a thorough follow-up plan for the incoming opportunities.

West attended West Liberty, earning a Bachelor of Arts in education in 1997. In 2010, he received a master’s degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia University. Dr. West received his Doctorate in Education from WVU in Coaching and Teaching studies in 2021, his dissertation focused on the Barrier to Volunteerism for Division I Coaches.

He and his wife, Sarah, have four children, Carleigh, Sydney, Quinton and Alec.

LAUREN CASSANO

Lauren Cassano enters her first season as the women’s associate head coach with West Virginia University’s Swimming Team.

Cassano spent last season as the assistant swim coach at Saint Francis University. Under her guidance, a pool record and long-standing school record fell as she helped develop an NEC Rookie and multiple NEC Players of the Week. While coaching at SFU, Cassano oversaw the progression and execution of the sprint and distance IM training groups working on the development of body mechanics for maintaining shoulder health, increasing mobility and overall strength. Understanding the importance of believing in yourself, she worked to lay a foundation of confidence training for the Red Flash swimmers.

The Venetia, Pennsylvania, native also supported the University’s academics for her Student Athletes. The Red Flash were able to maintain their success in the classroom as well. As a team, the swimmers held a GPA of 3.5 for the year, with 8 women achieving a 4.0 GPA. SFU Swimming was awarded the highest percentage of athletes on the North East Conference (NEC) Honor Roll with 88.4% as well as a continued 100% graduation rate.

While there, Coach Cassano signed 6 incoming highly ranked freshman, built up the recruiting platform, assisted with travel plans, budgets, and meet origination.

Prior to SFU, Cassano was the assistant swim coach at Allegheny College for two seasons. While there, the Gators achieved their highest North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) standing in recent years for both the women and men, third & sixth respectively. The women broke the 400-freestyle relay record and multiple athletes were named NCAC Athlete of the Week.

Academically, while under Cassano’s guidance, the men and women Gators achieved high honors, 3.5 and 3.7, respectively. Ten (10) athletes were named to the 2020 Honor Roll and a total of 16 for 2021.

Coach Cassano contributed with roles in recruitment, fundraising and the organization of Learn to Swim.

Before entering into the collegiate level of swim coaching, Cassano spent four years as a strength and conditioning coach with UPMC Sports Performance under the direction of one of the top sports performance experts, who has worked with numerous Division I and professional athletes.

Cassano oversaw the evaluation, production, progression, and execution of all training plans for high school prospects and collegiate level athletic training. This included training for top performance, injury prevention and return to play.

Lauren graduated from Grove City College in 2015 as a decorated Student Athlete with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science.

Ranked 10th in NCAA Division III, she earned four-time All-American Consideration, was a four-year letter winner, four-year All-Conference and President Athletic Conference (PAC) Champion in the 100 and 200 backstroke and a two-time PAC Champion 200 IM. She broke school records in the 100 and 200 backstroke, contributed to the 400 medley relay school record as well as the pool records for the 200 freestyle and medley relays.

Cassano was named Captain her senior season.

DAVID DIXON

David Dixon enters his first season as an assistant coach with West Virginia University’s Swimming Team.

The Richmond, Virginia, native joins the WVU staff after spending the last five seasons as a member of the Mountaineer swimming and diving team. Prior to joining the Mountaineers’ coaching staff, Dixon was the assistant coach of Club Mountaineer Aquatics, where he led a group of high school-aged athletes, created specific practice plans to reach their goals and assisted in the running of meets.

Dixon graduated from West Virginia in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise psychology and a bachelor’s degree in athletic coaching education.

A three-time Big 12 Conference champion and an NCAA All-American, Dixon became the only Mountaineer in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in five consecutive seasons. Additionally, he is the current record holder for the men’s 200yard butterfly (1:41.59) and sits in the No. 2 spot for the men’s 100 fly (46.65) and the 200 individual medley (1:45.47).

Karla Helder enters her third season as the head diving coach of the West Virginia University swimming and diving team.

During Helder’s second year with WVU, she had seven divers qualify for the 2021 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships –seniors Camille Burt, PJ Lenz and Nick Cover, juniors Marian Tiemeier and Owen Johns, and freshmen Sarah Krusinski and Glenn Eloriaga. Lenz’ second-consecutive NCAA Championships bid highlighted the 2021-22 campaign.

At the 2022 Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships, WVU had two divers earn All-Big 12 First Team Honors, while six earned second team recognition. Lenz took him silver on men’s platform and went on to finish second at Zones.

Out of the diving well, Helder continued to lead her team to success inside the classroom. Two senior divers, Lenz and Burt, were named as 2022 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Recipients.

Helder led the Mountaineers to success during her first year at WVU. Four divers qualified for the 2021 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, this marked the first time in program history that multiple divers competed at a single championship. Jacob Cardinal Tremblay made his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships; while Jake Lowe (Sr.), Owen Johns (So.) and PJ Lenz (Jr.) qualified for their first time.

West Virginia broke five program records during the 2021 campaign, four of which were a part of Helder’s diving team. PJ Lenz earned a pair of records during his 2021 campaign, scoring a 377.00 on men’s platform at the Big 12 Championships and a 398.98 on 3-meter to open the season at Pitt. Freshman, Sara Haggerty, earned a spot in the record books on women’s platform notching a score of 269.33.

Academically, the Mountaineers were also a success. Both squads were named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams during the 2020-21 season. Forty studentathletes were named to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Swimming & Diving teams; six divers were named to first team and two were recognized on second team.

Helder arrived in Morgantown in August after serving as the diving coach at San Jose State from 2018-20. While coaching at SJSU, Helder led every diver to personal-best scores on 1-meter and 3-meter springboard. During this time, she also served as the assistant diving coach and development coach for the Santa Clara Diving Club, where she facilitated meet management, diver progress reports, recruiting videos and parent communication.

Prior to her time with the Spartans, Helder spent 12 seasons as the diving coach at Buffalo, where she was instrumental in developing a strong diving program that featured school records for both the men’s and women’s teams. While at UB, she coached an Eastern College Athletics Conference (ECAC) men’s individual champion and two All-MidAmerican Conference divers, including 13 regional qualifiers.

Helder coached a pair of Bulls to qualify for the NCAA championships for the first time in the program’s history and led the school’s only diver to compete at the Olympic Trials.

A two-time NCAA Division II National Diving Coach of the Year, Helder also spent nine seasons at the University of California at Davis, where she coached four national champions and 36 All-Americans. She was named the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003, while also earning the conference’s 2001 Women’s Diving Coach of the Year award. Helder also has earned quite a few national and world diving titles herself, most recently at the 2008 U.S. Master’s Nationals, where she won her age group events, setting two new American records in the process, breaking her own records set in 2004. In May 2008, she traveled to Perth, Australia, for the World Master’s Diving Championships, where she won a pair of gold medals and broke both the 1-meter and 3-meter world records in her age group (50-54).

A graduate of California State University, Chico, Helder earned a Bachelor of Arts in physical education with a minor is psychology in 1982. During her college career, she was an NCAA Division I AllAmerican and Academic All-American status, a two-time Division II individual national champion and a member of a Division II national championship team under coach Pete Accardy at CSU Northbridge.

Following her successful college career, the Suisun, California, native was inducted into the Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.

2022-23 SEASON PREVIEW

VETERANS LEADING THE WAY

For the sixth consecutive season, the Mountaineers are fortunate to have a double-digit member senior class. A total of 16 senior swimmers and divers (seven men, nine women) are prepared to provide team leadership and set the tone both in and out of the pool.

Diver Owen Johns and swimmer David Snider lead the way for the Mountaineer men; Johns is a three-time NCAA Zones A qualifier and has been recognized twice as All-Big 12 Second Team, while Snider qualified for USA Swimming’s 2022 Phillips 66 National meet in July 2022. Jonathan Bennett, Zach Boley, Conrad Molinaro, Jack Saum and Roberts Zemturis round out the men’s senior class.

On the women’s side, diver Marian Tiemeier and swimmers Jaqueline McCutchan and Harna Minezawa lead the way for WVU. All three were All-Big 12 Second Team during the 2021-22 season, while Tiemeier is a three-time NCAA Zones A qualifier and looks for to qualify for her fourth-consecutive year. Meredith Bolinger, Ginger Hansen, Mathilde Kaelbel, Tatum Peyerl, Anne-Elaine Tiller and Sarah Young complete the women’s senior class.

In addition to a well-rounded senior class, WVU is fortunate to have talent in its junior and sophomore classes as well, including juniors Justin Heimes, who took home two bronze medals at the 2022 Big 12 Championships, and William Mullen, who set a program record in the 1650 to earn All-Big 12 First Team. Juniors

Joe Schaefer, Roanoke Shirk and Brendan Williams all secured All-Big 12 Second Team during the 2021-22 season, along with sophomore’s Glenn Eloriaga, Zhenya Ingram, Reilly Keaney and Jake Young.

After gaining a new home in 2019, a shortened 2020 season due to COVID-19, the Mountaineers are ready to carry the momentum from last season into 2022-23 campaign.

Last season, WVU tallied a pair of program records, including junior William Mullen’s record-breaking performance in the men’s 1650. Mullen topped a 39-year-standing record, previously set by Craig Cooper in 1983, with a time of 15:21.57. Additionally, transfer and fifth-year Ana Zortea set a new program record in the women’s 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 53.41.

In total, the Mountaineers combined to earn 13 medals at the 2022 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, including one gold, four silvers and eight bronze. The men’s team earned a third-place finish and the women’s squad finished fourth at the conference meet.

Behind the momentum from last season and the additions to this year’s squad, West Virginia is looking ahead to 2022-23.

Junior Paige Dressel and sophomore Mia Walters lead the pack for the women after both secured bronze at Conference meet last season, while Walters’ classmate, Emily Knorr earned All-Big 12 First Team honors. Sophomores Miranda Kirtley, juniors Lauren Musbach and Abby Reardon were recognized as All-Big 12 Second Team last season, also, sophomore diver Sarah Krusinski qualified for her first NCAA Zones A meet and earned All-Big 12 Second Team.

NEWCOMERS ON THE BLOCKS AND BOARDS

Twenty-two newcomers from across the country and around the globe join coach Vic Riggs and his Mountaineer swimming and diving teams in Morgantown this season. With just two transfer student-athletes, 20 freshmen are set to begin their college careers at WVU.

“The incoming men’s and women’s classes are two of our strongest in recent years,” Riggs said. “The staff did a great job of identifying strong individuals and building those connections with

them about WVU and our program. During the recruiting process, it became very apparent that they all share the same values of passion, integrity and commitment that we are looking for to improve our program.”

Lilly Culp joins the 2022-23 squad from University of Illinois Chicago, while Olivia Busch, Mia Cheatwood, Peyton Day, Elysabeth Grossman, Alyssa Heffelfinger, Makena Malkemus, Gabriela Martin, Mackenzie Pagett, Kaylee Price, Bella Reynolds, Abigail Sullivan and Ada Szwabinska complete the freshman class on the women’s side.

For the men, Danny Berlitz joins the Mountaineers from the University of Michigan, while Maverick Bray, Patrick Burke, Jamin Harlan, Adam McDonald, Maxwell Nielsen, Alvaro Santiago, Christian Simpson and Christian Torres are set to begin their collegiate careers this season.

2022-23 SCHEDULE

In their fourth season at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park, the Mountaineers are eyeing seven home meets, a U.S. Open meet and other prime opportunities for the squad to carry the momentum from the 2021-22 slate.

WVU opens the fall campaign with three straight home meets, kicking off with the annual Gold-Blue meet on October 1, before hosting the 11th annual West Virginia State Games on Oct. 14-15h, to open the regular season.

The following weekend, the Mountaineers play host to soon-tobe Big 12 Conference member and former Big East foe, Cincinnati on Oct. 21-22 for a two-day dual meet.

WVU kicks off November with a road-trip to State College, Pennsylvania, for a dual meet against Penn State on the 4-5, before the Mountaineers return home to host the third annual WVU Invitational, on Nov. 17-29. Six swimming and diving programs travel to Morgantown for the three-day, mid-season winter invite – including Colgate, Drexel, ECU, Old Dominion, Seton Hall and Villanova.

Following the Invite, qualifying Mountaineers will compete in the USA Swimming’s 2022 Toyota U.S. Open from Nov. 30-December 3, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to wrap up the first half of the season.

WVU kicks off the new year with a trio of dual meets, beginning with the Backyard Brawl in Pittsburgh, Pa. on January 14. The Mountaineers and Pitt will square off for the first time since 2021. The women’s squad continues their road swing with a Big 12 dual meet in Ames, Iowa, against Iowa State on Jan. 21.

To cap off the regular season, WVU’s 16 seniors will be recognized on Jan. 27-28, as the Mountaineers close out their seven-meet homestand, on Senior Day against Villanova.

Postseason begins on February 3-5, as West Virginia hosts the WVU First Chance Meet, providing some Mountaineers their first look at postseason competition prior to the 2023 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Mountaineers travel to Austin, Texas, on Feb. 22-25, for the conference meet, as Texas will play host for the last time. Following Big 12s, the women will have the opportunity to compete at the NCAA Last Chance Meet in Austin, on Feb. 26.

WVU comes back to Morgantown to host one last postseason swimming competition following Big 12’s on March 5, as the NCAA Men’s Last Chance Meet takes place. The following week, West Virginia plays host to the 2023 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships for the second time, with dates to be announced at a later date.

The CSCAA National Invitational is tabbed for March 8-11, in Elkhart, Indiana, before the Mountaineers conclude the season at the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled for March 15-18, while the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships are set for the following weekend, March 22-25. The championships will be held at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Additionally, fifth-year Ana Zortea broke a program record in the women’s 100-yard backstroke, as she bested the previous school record of 53.50 – set by Amelie Currat in 2018 –with a time of 53.41.

E.GORDON GEE, J.D., ED.D

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Recently, the website Great Value Colleges named him the nation’s top university president.

In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the university’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university.

Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and was granted full professorship in 1978.

One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1980, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (20012007). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013.

Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business-Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, and he currently serves on the Board of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain.

Active in many national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio.

In 2011-2012, he was asked by Governor Kasich to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. And he served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Gee presently serves on the council of presidents for the Southern University Research Association and as a member of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration.

Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Gee received the Elite Leadership Academy’s 2020 IMPACT Award, which honors exceptional leaders for self-knowledge, a clear vision and active coaching and mentoring relationships.

A Distinguished Eagle Scout and lifelong Scouting supporter, he has received the Silver Buffalo Award, Scouting’s top honor for adult volunteers. He is the co-author of more than a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Land-Grant Universities for the Future” and “What’s Public About Public Higher Ed?”

Gee’s fiancée is Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is clinical associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and CEO and Founder of Nest Health. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón and they have five children.

WREN BAKER

Wren Baker was named vice president and director of athletics at West Virginia University on Nov. 30, 2022.

WVU’s 13th director of athletics came to Morgantown from the University of North Texas, where he served as the vice president and athletics director since 2016. With previous stops at Missouri, Memphis, Northwest Missouri and Rogers State, Baker holds more than 20 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics.

“I am thrilled to welcome Wren Baker to the West Virginia University family as our new athletic director, and I have no doubt his personality and energy will connect with our student-athletes and coaches, as well as our campus community and alumni,” President E. Gordon Gee said.

At WVU, Baker has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of more than $90 million, approximately 250 employees and nearly 500 student-athletes.

“I am incredibly grateful to President Gee, Rob Alsop, the search committee and Board of Governors for the opportunity to serve as vice president and director of athletics at West Virginia University,” Baker said. “WVU boasts a powerful brand reputation and a storied academic and athletic history.”

At UNT, seven varsity programs (men’s cross country, volleyball, women’s soccer, football, men’s basketball, women’s golf and softball) combined to win 17 conference or division championships during Baker’s tenure, and the overall athletic department’s winning percentage in the last year was the best in the modern era. In 2019, every team achieved a winning season for the first time in school history. He led 18 head coaching searches, and his hires have a combined winning percentage of nearly 70%.

UNT student-athletes excelled in the classroom under Baker’s leadership, posting top APR scores and setting four consecutive department Graduation Success Rate records. Every team recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher with the Spring 2022 department GPA hitting a 3.206 average.

Baker also led record fundraising years at North Texas. The school registered its four best fundraising years in its history, and the overall top five largest gifts at UNT came under Baker’s leadership. He guided North Texas athletics to a school record for fundraising in a single year, nearly doubling the previous department record.

Ticket revenue increased by 125% under Baker, and football attendance grew by 71%, while men’s and women’s basketball crowds grew by more than 60%. Additional achievements at North Texas included a five-year strategic plan, new 20-year facilities master plan and lucrative contracts for multi-media rights, licensing, apparel and equipment.

Originally from Valliant, Oklahoma, Baker earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2001 where he was a member of the honors program. He went on to earn his master’s degree in education leadership from Oklahoma State in 2003. He and his wife, Heather, a Bokchito, Oklahoma, native, have two daughters, Addisyn and Reagan.

FROM I-79: Take the Star City/WVU (mile marker 155) exit and follow signs toward Mylan Park, turning left at the stop sign onto Chaplin Road. Proceed onto Chaplin Road for approximately 1.5 miles, then turn right onto Mylan Park Road, immediately after Mylan Park Elementary. Follow the road up the hill, and veer right when you reach the first turn on your right. Continue up this road and eventually you will reach the parking lot for the Aquatic Center.
