Worthing High School PE Newsletter July 2016 ACTIV8 DAY 2016 Worthing High School held its annual Activ8 Day on Friday 15th July. Worthing High school sport leaders and past year 11 students were in at 7am to help the PE department set up. 40 tutor groups, representing each of the four communities, took part in a carousel of activities including bench ball, softball, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, handball, tennis, table tennis, tchoukball, basketball, dodge ball, nerf and football. Tutor groups were looking to earn as many points as they could for their community through team work, participation, effort and competition. There was a real sense of community ethos throughout the school which created a great atmosphere for students and staff.

YEAR 10 STUDENTS REPRESENT WEST SUSSEX AT SUSSEX SCHOOLS FINALS James Lund and Alex Hopkins were both chosen to represent West Sussex South at the Sussex County Schools Athletics finals at K2 in Crawley on June 4th. Both James and Alex were chosen following their success in their respective events at the Worthing District athletics meeting in April. James won the 100m event and Alex won the 400m against some tough opposition. At K2, James recorded a time of 11.62 seconds coming 4th overall, whilst Alex posted a personal best of 55.78 to come 5th overall. Well done to both of you and we look forward to watching your progress over the next year.
SAILING SUCCESS FOR GEORGE LEAN Six years ago, I joined Worthing Sailing Club and learnt how to sail Bugs. Since then I have progressed to being able to single-handedly sail a Laser Pico. In 2013 I won the clubs Junior Sailor of the Year trophy. This year I have been crewing for various people, learning to sail on a Dart 18. Back in May I was approached by an adult club member who had seen me sailing. He was looking for crew for the Dart 18 National championships to be held later that month and wanted me to sail with him. It didn’t take me long to say yes… and then I had to ask mum and dad if I could go! The weekend was an amazing experience. The sun was out but it was very windy out on the solent. Four days of sailing was exhausting but this fantastic opportunity resulted in us coming 5th out of 64 boats. Coming home with a trophy after my first major competition was amazing. I can’t wait for the next race! 4
HARLEQUINS RUGBY TRIALS FOR JAMES MAY James May in Year 7 has been playing rugby for seven years and is a member of WRFC U12 first team. James has played on the wing and centre but now prefers the 2nd Row. This year his Worthing team have won the National U12 Land Rover Cup, won the Brighton Festival, Worthing ‘A’ and Pulborough rugby tournaments. They were runners-up in the Wimborne tournament whilst on tour and were also runners-up in the Sussex U12 League. To top off an extraordinary year on the rugby pitch, James was invited to trial with Harlequins earlier this month. We look forward to following his success during the upcoming rugby season. Well done James!

MOTORSPORT HONOUR
Congratulations to both Ben and James Colburn who have been invited by Lord March this week to race at the Goodwood Revival in September. Both students will be racing in the St Marys Trophy Austin A30/ A35’s. This event is something which is renowned worldwide and will have 100,000 spectators attend over the 3 day event. Many of the top racing drivers and celebrities will be attending. This will be the pinnacle of both James and Bens racing career so far. We are all so proud of both students here at Worthing High school and wish them both well in their bright motorsport futures.

MAXTED TENNIS STARS IN THE MAKING Lui Maxted 7 HBLE, is a promising young tennis star destined for great achievements in pursuit of his dream to become a professional player. Lui first picked up a tennis racquet when he was three years old and loved to hit a ball against the wall for hours, demonstrating impressive hand-eye coordination at such a young age. It wasn’t long before he found himself on the tennis court, exhibiting a natural talent for the sport and catching the eye of the coaching team at the West Worthing Tennis & Squash Club. He embarked on a programme of individual and group tennis lessons at the club that helped develop his skills and mindset, enabling him to start competing in local tournaments by the age of 5. Lui has a formidable forehand and a naturally gifted single-handed backhand, likened by many to an early Richard Gasquet, although he is also trying to develop the penetrating power seen by the likes of Stan Wawrinka which no doubt will come with time as he grows and matures physically. Lui continues to follow a comprehensive weekly programme of tennis training and strength & conditioning sessions, scheduled around his school timetable, with weekends dedicated to intensive training periods or tournament matches. The commitment required stretches beyond hours spent on the court or in the gym, as Lui must also be mindful of the food he eats and he is learning the importance and impact of diet on his physical and mental performance. Lui travels the country for competitions and has achieved many successes in local, regional and national events, the most recent being Runner Up in the National Grade 2 Clay Court event in Buckinghamshire. He has also recently represented Sussex in the County Cup tournament for his own age group (12u) and also the older 14u age group. Sussex was 2nd place in both events, narrowly losing out in thrilling 10 point tie-break shoot outs on both occasions.
Lui is currently ranked No.7 in Great Britain for 12u and No.1 in Sussex (No.2 for 14u), but is always looking to improve, being partly motivated by his older brother Kai, who is a former student at Worthing High. Kai is 16 years old and has just completed his GCSEs at Bedes School in Hailsham, having joined there in 2014 after gaining a sports scholarship for Tennis. Kai is currently No. 5 in Great Britain for 16u, No. 30 for 18u and No. 95 for Mens – only 94 places below Andy Murray! He is No. 1 in Sussex for all age groups, is a regular member of the 18u and Men’s County Cup teams and has also represented Great Britain as a junior. Kai is an inspiration to Lui with his dedication, commitment and self discipline especially when having to juggle GCSE revision with his competition schedule these past few months. Kai recently reached the Quarter Final of a British Tour event in Bournemouth (beating a world ranked player along the way) and won a Grade 2 National in Hertfordshire (and 18u Doubles event), whilst also fitting in 5 hours of revision each day of the tournaments. Lui will continue to follow his dream and is grateful to the teaching staff at Worthing High and in particular Mrs Dickinson, who is always supportive when he requests occasional time off school for his Tennis and helping him to keep on top of school work by providing additional material in advance where possible. 6
YEAR 5 TASTER MORNINGS Over the last four weeks the PE department has welcomed students and their parents/ carers to experience a fun filled activity morning at WHS. It was an absolute pleasure to meet everyone who attended one of the taster sessions. Well done to all who visited Worthing High School, we hope you enjoyed yourself!

SIMPLY DANCE 2016
On Thursday 14th April Worthing High School’s annual dance show, Simply Dance returned to Worthing Pavilion for the fifth year running. Again like previous years the evening was a huge success with over 250 students participating in the evening from Worthing High School, The Vale, Thomas A Becket Junior School, Heene C of E Primary School and Thomas A Becket Infant School. The performers met at 3.30pm as they eagerly waited for their final rehearsal onstage before the doors opened at 6.00pm, for over 600 people to take to their seats to enjoy the many performances included in the evening. The evening consisted of twenty dance performances, each showing a different style, genre and theme. The evening was a brilliant success and enjoyed by all.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS 2016
At the start of the term athletes from Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 competed in the annual Worthing District Athletics Meet at Worthing Leisure Centre. As always the standard of competition was very high and students from Worthing High School recorded some very notable victories:
James Lund (Year 10) won Gold in the 100m final, 200m final and 4 x 100m Relay final. As a result, James was selected to represent the area once again at the Sussex School Annual Athletics meet at the K2 Arena in Crawley. Alex Hopkins (Year 10) won Bronze in the 400m final and the time he recorded was sufficiently quick enough for him to be selected for Sussex Schools. As a result of their dominance in the 4 x 100m final, the entire Worthing High School KS4 boys relay team were also put forward for Sussex Schools. Kobe Whitford (Year 8) burst on to the sprinting scene this year and on his first attempt gained Silver in both the 100m final and 200m final. As a result he too booked himself a place at Sussex Schools. Jack Hall (Year 9) won Bronze in the 400m final. A noticeable performance from Georgia Dean (Year 8) in a multitude of disciplines won her much praise from the staff and students alike. Georgia qualified, in her first appearance for Worthing High School at the District meet, for all finals in which she competed only just failing to medal. A stand out all round performance, well done. The Key Stage 4 boys’ team came 3rd overall in the competition out of 12 schools, a great inclusive performance.
Overall it was a fantastic day enjoyed by all, with all the students performing extremely well demonstrating a first rate attitude, total dedication and comradery.

STEYNING NOVICES 2016 Another fantastic day in June at Steyning Novices for the athletes from Year 7, 8 and 9. The stunning weather was complimented by the stunning performances on offer from all year groups competing in a number of different disciplines. However, the hot and humid conditions did not deter the students from Worthing High School many of whom were keen to repeat their excellent performances at the District meet earlier in the term and really announce their arrival on the Worthing school athletics circuit. Again the students did not disappoint and again they put on an awesome display of speed, power and endurance to record some fantastic victories.
Sophie Cole (Year 7) won Gold in the girls Javelin. Kobe Whitford (Year 8) continued his recent good form in winning Gold in the boys 100m, 200m and the 4 x 100m relay. Sam Williamson (Year 8) won Gold in the boys Shot Putt. The Year 8 boys relay team (Ryan Leah, Marley Miranda Marshall, Joe Nerval, Kobe Whitford) won Gold. Dieter Forster (Year 7) only just missed out on a medal, finishing a very impressive 4th in both the Discus and Shot Putt Georgia Dean (Year 8) continued where she left off at the district athletics meet earlier in the year with an awe inspiring display competing in the 200m (where she gained a Silver in the final), the very demanding 1500m, the long jump as well assisting the Year 8 girls relay team through to the 4 x 100m final where they came a well-deserved 4th overall. The Year 8 boys came a credible 3rd overall in the competition out of 12 schools.
Overall, it was another fantastic day with our students and another breath taking display of guts, determination and resilience from all of the athletes from Worthing High School, a huge well done to all those who competed on an extremely hot and humid afternoon. 11
SUSSEX CRICKET DISABILITY DAY
Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 volunteered on Monday 16th May at the Sussex Cricket Foundation Disability Day. The day saw over 400 participants from schools and adult centres on the outfield at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, taking part in an array of cricket activities. ‘The Cricket Factory’ was also on site with their specialist equipment which proved a real hit with the participants.
Students from Worthing High school were involved in supporting coaches and running their own mini stations on the day. Students were superb throughout the day, and really engaged in the event. Feedback from coaches and the organisations who attended has been glowing and they have represented the school very well.

CRACKIT What is Crackit? A group of 14 students commit to attend a 2 hour a week after school club for 6 weeks. Each week, the first hour is spent playing Tennis with West Worthing Tennis club. The second hour is spent with a Design agency Pleece and Co who supports the students to design characters related to Tennis which will be used to brand team Tennis Rackets and T shirts.
A number of students from year 7 and 8 were selected to take part in a 6 week project called Crackit, following an invitation from Future Proof CIC. They had designed an innovative programme for secondary students aiming to link Design and Technology and Sport in an interesting way. Worthing High School was chosen as the pilot school for West Sussex and the first cohort started in November 2015. Mrs Allibone led the sessions with the input of the two main support partners, West Worthing Tennis Club and Pleece and Co. Students were spilt into two teams of seven. All team members contributed to designing and playing tennis each week. Team captains for the first Tennis Crackit cohort were Daniel Vassiliou and Sophie Cole. The sixth week is a celebration with play offs against each team and a formal Tennis tea to which all parents were invited. This was such a successful project we are now coming to the end of Crackit 4. We are hoping to start the next sessions of Crackit Cricket in October 2016 for the new year 7s.

SCOTT STROTTEN SHOOTING FOR THE STARS Year 8 student Scott Strotten has only been smallbore shooting competitively for three years but has recently become the Sussex County Under 16 and Under 21 champion, held at Chichester Rifle Club during May. The last time a minor won both the county titles was in 2010. Scott, in Year 8, has made the Sussex county junior team for the last two years and has represented British scouting at the junior International match at Bisley. Scott currently holds the Worthing and West Sussex long range junior titles at 50m and 100yds, as well as the short range title at 25yds. To top that all off, Scott is also the Scout national rifle champion. Scott said “I really enjoy my shooting and am very happy with my achievements so far. One day I would like to shoot for GB and at the Olympics too.� Well done Scott, we look forward to hearing about your next successes!
UNDER 15 GIRLS CRICKET The U15 girls cricket team have enjoyed a competitive summer cricket season and have shown some excellent skills in the field. Their batting, bowling and fielding have all improved and they have been enjoying the game whilst posting some good scores and limiting the opposition at the same time. Well done to all those involved this season .

WHS CRICKET ACADEMY
Worthing High School Cricket Academy in partnership with Sussex cricket foundation Year 5 and 6 students from Vale, Downsbrook, Thomas A Becket, and Durrington Middle attended. Students were taught by Worthing High School Year 9 PE students, developing their cricket skills, completing in a carousel of activities. In the afternoon students participated in a tournament where the Sussex’s mascot ‘Sid the Shark’ joined in with the fun. Excellent cricket was on display all day. Students played in a round robin tournament throughout the afternoon. Vale 2 and TAB finished joint on points however TAB were victorious with a greater number of runs scored. TAB were crowned ‘Worthing High Schools academy cricket tournament winners’ for the third year running. Sid the shark presented all students with a certificate and the winners with medals. Worthing High School is already looking forward to the tournament next year.

U12 BOYS CRICKET The Y7 boys have trained hard this season but due to the inconsistent weather, have had little opportunity to demonstrate their skills on the pitch. The team have an abundance of potential and we all look forward to watching them deliver over the next few seasons. Well done to all those involved this season.

YEAR 7 GIRLS ROUNDERS Following a fantastic season of wins, the year 7 rounders girls got through to the League finals at Chatsmore on Tuesday 21st June. They played Sion in the semi-final and beat them by half a rounder. In the final, they played Rydon and lost by the narrowest of margins, another half rounder! They have been brilliant all season and their enthusiasm and keenness has been infectious. Well done to all the girls involved this season .

PE PRESENTATION EVENING 2016 Worthing High School’s PE Achievement Evening took placed on Wednesday 13th July. The guest speaker this year was Tim Prendergast, Paralympic Gold Medallist 2004 800m track. The PE department were proud to reward those students who have represented the school so successfully this academic year.
