Trio learn Champions League opponents The draw for the Round of 16 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League was made on Monday. Former England international Karen Carney, who was a winner of the competiition in 2007 with Arsenal, made the draw along with UEFA’s Head of Women’s Football, Nadine Kessler. The eight sides with the highest cofficients were seeded and placed in a separate pot from the unseeded teams. One team was drawn from each pot, then placed in a second pot with the first team picked out at home in the opening leg. No club could meet a team from their own association. Of the sixteen teams involved in the draw, Olympique Lyonnais have been in this round in all eleven seasons since its introduction, as they chase a record seventh title and fifth in a row. The first leg of their tie will make them the first club to reach 100 games in the competition. VfL Wolfsburg and Arsenal are the other former winners involved, while Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain and Fortuna Hjorring are past finalists. FC Minsk are the first Belarusian side to compete in this round; their previous best run came when they lost to Barcelona in the 2016-17 Round of 32. Along with Minsk, FC Twente, Breidablik and BIIK-Kazygurt began in the qualifying round - four teams is the most since 2010-11, the last year that all national runners-up (including from the top nations) started in qualifying. As for the draw, two of the three remaining British teams will be at home in their respective first legs. Manchester City will be up against familiar opponents in the shape of Atletico Madrid, whose side is likely to contain former City striker Toni Duggan, as well as goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal, who left Arsenal at the end of last season. Atlético knocked out City in the Round of 32 last season, the first time and so far only time that City have failed to make the semi finals in three entries. Glasgow City meanwhile will play host to Brondby in the first leg of their tie. Scott Booth’s side are one round away from emulating their best ever run in the competition but the Danish Champions will be a tough obstacle for them. Brondby were knocked out at this stage last season but have got as far as the semi finals on three occasions in the past, including in 2007 when they were beaten by Arsenal. Arsenal themselves will be away in the first leg of their tie, against SK Slavia Praha, who were the conquerors of Hibernian in the previous round. Slavia reached the quarter finals for the third time last season and are experienced European campaigners. UEFA has also announced that the 2021 Champions League Final will be played at Gamla Ullevi, Gothenburg, but there is bad news for Scotland in that they will only have one team competing next season, having fallen out of the 12 highest ranking nations. Russia have suffered the same but the Netherlands and Kazakhstan will have two teams in next season’s competition. UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 16 draw (ties to be played on 16/17 October): Glasgow City FC (SCO) v Brøndby IF (DEN) FC Barcelona (ESP) v FC Minsk (BLR) WFC BIIK-Kazygurt (KAZ) v FC Bayern München (GER) Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) v Fortuna Hjørring (DEN) Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) v Breidablik (ISL) VfL Wolfsburg (GER) v FC Twente (NED) SK Slavia Praha (CZE) v Arsenal Women FC (ENG) Manchester City (ENG) v Club Atlético de Madrid (ESP)

Leafe fall to Worthing Whyteleafe 0 Worthing Ladies 1 Worthing claimed a Women's FA Cup Second Round Qualifying berth and a visit to Wycombe Wanderers after a single goal away victory over London & South East Regional League side Whyteleafe in their delayed tie. A very evenly contested match of good quality was settled by a Sara Tubby header twenty minutes from time, but Worthing had to survive a late barrage of pressure in order to secure the win. The visiting South East Counties League Premier Division leaders created the better chances in a tight first half. 'Leafe keeper Daniella Mitchell had to be alert to parry a Samantha Mee cross and then save a shot from the resulting Samantha Mee and Olivia Woolacott battle for the ball corner. (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). Whyteleafe frequently got into good positions through fluent build up play but were unable to get shots in on goal. Worthing used the early ball to their speedy strikers to good effect and in one such attack, Sophie Humphrey was inches wide with a curling shot from the edge of the area but generally both defences were in charge during the opening period. The visitors went close in the opening minute of the second half as home defender Shanna Doherty was well placed to clear a header from a corner off the line. However, Whyteleafe then had their best attacks of the match, Katherine Butts firing just over, Olivia Woolacott drawing a good save from Amy Coster, then Hannah Duncan heading over from the resulting corner. Jess Lewry was denied by another fine save by Coster after another good 'Leafe move on 58 minutes. Worthing were always dangerous on the break and Humphrey fired over the bar when through on goal. Beth Kincaid went close at the far post and then provided the crucial pass for the winner on 72 minutes. Her through ball was inch perfect for Tubby to nip in and guide a cushioned header over the advancing Mitchell. Whyteleafe upped the pressure and laid siege on the visitors' goal. The hugely experienced defensive pairing of Tammy Waine and Rebecca Thompson-Agbro were forced into several last ditch interceptions as the home side dominated the ball and forced their way repeatedly into the Worthing area. One final diving headed clearance by Waine saw Worthing through to celebrate a very hard fought victory and a place in the Second Round Qualifying. England and Scotland make winning starts All of the home nations were in action as the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship qualifying groups got underway this week. Three of them - England, Scotland and Northern Ireland - were victorious but Wales suffered defeat in their all-British clash. Jess Park scored four goals as England began their campaign with a resounding 8-0 win over Cyprus. The Manchester City striker opened the scoring after just two minutes, firing past Ioanna Georgiou from a tight angle. She doubled the lead from the penalty spot just before the quarter hour mark and completed her hat-trick with just 25 minutes on the clock by evading the attentions of four defenders before beating Georgiou from close range. Holly Manders struck the post directly from a corner just moments before scoring England’s fourth. The Durham forward dispossessed Cyprus captain Elena Aristodimou in the centre of the park before strolling forward an unleashing a 25-yard drive which sailed over Georgiou. Park notched her fourth, and England’s fifth, on 62 minutes after being found by Simran Jhamat, who had a goal chalked off for offside in the first half. Substitute Katie Bradley, on for Manders, then benefitted from a weak goal kick by Georgiou to lob home the sixth goal. Another substitute, Ebony Salmon – on for Anabel Blanchard – danced through the Cyprus defence to add a seventh in the final minute, with Lucy Roberts completing the scoring in added time. Next up for the Young Lionesses is host nation Belarus on Saturday, followed by Serbia next Tuesday. Serbia were 4-1 winners in their meeting in the opening match. Scotland meanwhile also made it a winning start in their qualifying group when they defeated Bulgaria 4-0 in Belchatow. Pauline Hamill’s side led at the interval through a goal from Brogan Moore, scored midway through the first half, and their lead was doubled by Rebecca McGowan within four minutes of the restart. Hannah Scott further strengthened Scotland’s position when she scored within three minutes of coming on as a substitute, and Aisha Maughan completed a good day for her side when she added the final goal. Scotland are next in action on Saturday when they take on Croatia, who were beaten 2-0 by Poland in the other group game. They finish up against the Poles next Tuesday. Wales made the shorter trip to Northern Ireland for their group matches and opened up against the host nation at Shamrock Park in Portadown. It was Northern Ireland who were to triumph 1-0, Jessica Rea converting a corner from Casey Howe for the only goal of the game with seventeen minutes remaining. To make matters worse for Lauren Smith’s side, Josie Smith was red carded three minutes from time for a second bookable offence. Wales face a tough task in their second group match on Saturday as they face group favourites Norway, again in Portadown. Norway won by an eight-goal margin against Moldova, who will be their final group opponents on Tuesday at Solitude (Belfast). The top two sides in each of the 12 first qualifying round groups plus the four third-placed teams with the best record against the top two in their section will enter the elite round draw on Thursday 21st November. The elite round is scheduled for next spring with the eight team finals taking place in Georgia next July.

We talk to…..

Danni Griffiths & Sophie Le Marchand (Leyton Orient)

Leyton Orient have got off to a superb start in Division One South East of the FA Women’s National League, their 3-0 victory over AFC Basildon giving them a fifth win in six games and leaving them as one of three teams with the same goal difference aat the top of the table. We talked to O’s captain Danni Griffiths and striker Sophie Le Marchand, who admitted that they were not at their best when beating Basildon on Sunday but feel that, pverall, they are well equipped to be serious contenders in what could be a fascinating title race in their division:

Sophie: I think the result flatters us somewhat! We were very sluggish in the first half and it took a fantastic penalty save (by Naomi Ogunde) early in the second half to give us the kick up the backside that we needed. From that moment onwards, however, we subjected the opposition to wave upon wave of pressure and it was pleasing to see that we had the mental strength to win comfortably, even when we were not at our free flowing best.

Sophie: We knew that we had recruited really well over the summer, but it was always going to be challenging integrating those new players into the squad. It has been fantastic to see how quickly everyone has gelled and we are delighted that we remain unbeaten so far this season.

Sophie: I think it is going to be a very tight three horse race between us, Billericay and Ipswich. All three teams are very strong, very competitive and filled with talented individuals. We know each other very well, so we are anticipating some colossal battles ahead!

Danni: Sophie has been topping the goalscoring charts for us for years and it is brilliant to see her continuing that goalscoring prowess again this year. She simply loves to score goals! Otesha joined us at the start of this season, which has been excellent. Otesha is prolific and a real threat; I would hate to defend against her with her speed and power! Having them both in the squad (as well as our other fantastic attacking players) gives a real confidence that we will be a threat in front of goal in each and every game.

Danni: We don't know too much about Abingdon as I don't recall having played them before, save that one of our old fans from Oxford is also an Abingdon supporter! We are preparing ourselves and know it will be a good contest, they are currently third in the Southern Region League Premier Division and have had a strong start to the season. We are aware that the FA Cup is an underdog's dream and anything can happen but our job is to make sure Leyton Orient is in the hat for the next round.

Danni: Our main aim for the season is to win the league championship and promotion to the FAWNL Southern Premier. However, a good cup run in which we test ourselves against some of the best teams in the country would be fantastic to have alongside that!

Danni: In the WNL, every game is a test. However, Wimbledon are a very strong team year on year and they have had a very good start to this season. This is the first game in which we have played one of the other unbeaten teams so it is bound to be a tasty affair, particularly as it is a midweek game under the lights! It is these games that will determine the outcome at the end of the season so it these games we long for!

Danni: The team is definitely ready to go all the way and hopefully win the league and promotion this season. That's our objective, we have the talent in the squad and, most importantly, we believe we can do it. Our thanks to Danni and Sophie!

The Women’s FA Cup Road to the Final DURHAM CESTRIA v OSSETT UNITED Ossett United ended the Cup hopes of Bridlington Rovers with a 7-0 victory to take them through to the Second Round Qualifying. Ellie Betteridge, Danielle Sidebottom and Chelsea Schofield all scored twice, with Emily Starkie adding the other, to set themselves up with a tie against FA Women's National League newcomers Durham Cestria, who enter the competition at this stage. Cestria Girls were established in 2007 and, after some success as a junior grassroots club, they entered senior football after a successful merger with South Durham - who themselves were County Cup winners on a few occasions - becoming South Durham & Cestria LFC in 2012. In 2014, the club made a successful bid to join the FA Women's Super League along with Durham University and became Durham Women F.C. Durham Cestria were formed and became an official partner club of the senior side. They quickly became very successful themselves and, a year after winning the North East League Northern Division title, they became the Premier Division Champions, as well as winning the League Cup, gaining promotion to Division One North of the National League. Durham Cestria are managed by Gareth Smith and Jen Knowles is captain. They have started well in their new league and currently sit in fourth place, with Erin Nelson and Dannika Purdham as their leading scorers. Poole Town Ladies are one of the few ever present teams to compete every season in the Dorset Women's League and this is pivotal to the progression and development of their players. Following promotion into the South West Women's Regional League Division One the club quickly achieved promotion into the South West Women's Regional League Premier Division in season 2004-05 following a season going unbeaten and scoring a phenomenal numbers of goals. The next few seasons saw the team competing in both the South West Women's Regional League and the Dorset League - being the only club running two ladies teams consistently for a number of years. More recently, the club achieved their highest achievement to date by gaining promotion to the FA Women's National League, which they have now competed in for three seasons. The ladies play at the highest level of football for any ladies team in Dorset, including their illustrious Premier League neighbours, AFC Bournemouth, something which they are extremely proud of. In recognition of their achievements the club were named the Dorset Club of the Year in 2018 and the FA Women's Premier League Respect Club of the Year 2018 - fantastic accolades to win. Shifnal ready for trip to Wolves’ lair Shifnal Town manager Mark Corbett is relishing the chance to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Women’s FA Cup Second Round Qualifying on Sunday. The West Midlands League side make the short trip to play their illustrious neighbours and Corbett told Women’s Soccer Scene: “I can’t wait for Sunday now. It’s a great test for my ladies. They are going into the game as underdogs and have nothing to lose. “Every game I am with them they always make me proud. Win, lose or draw we are always learning and building as a team. All I am asking is for them to go and show everyone how far as a team we have come and to enjoy every minute of it.” Vice captain Demmie Bown added: “It’s always an honour and privilege being vice captain to the best bunch of girls I’ve ever played with, but to be a part of this huge game for us is nerve racking and a huge challenge which we are all looking forward to playing and giving everything we have as usual.” “I am really looking forward to playing our FA Cup game against Wolves,” said Megan Hazlehurst. “Having played for them previously, I know what we are up against and the level of football we need to match. “I’d be lying if I said it would be an easy game for us, because it will be very dificult, but we have prepared the best we can for it and ready to give it our all.”

Abingdon set for Chesham challenge Abingdon Town manager Kieran Beesley says that this Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup Second Round Qualifying tie against Chesham Utd will be a great opportunity for his players to shine on a bigger stage, Abingdon, who were promoted to Division One of the Southern Region League at the start of the season, have the chance to take on the FA Women’s National League side after beating Walton Casuals 4-3 after extra time in the previous round and Beesley told Women’s Soccer Scene that the whole club is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s exciting for the club and women's section that after one year, we are now on a great early run in the FA cup and are really excited about our chances,” he said. “We have great squad depth and potential to push on. I'm excited to see the girls grab this opportunity and prove themselves. We are a small club but are ready to do big things.” “We want to continue this run of form into the league and all cup competitions,” added Abingdon captain Isi Meade. “Kieran has done his research all season and you can see the extra time and effort he has been putting in for each game. We will be well prepared, that’s for sure! “Everyone loves a cup run, especially in the FA Cup. We are under no illusions that we are one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition but everyone loves an upset, so why can't it be us!” Vice captain Sam Mayo said: “I’m really looking forward to the game, we know we will be up against some tough opposition. As long as we prepare properly, we have every opportunity to get a result and cause a cup upset.”

Moneyfields set sights on Larkhall Moneyfields have been working their way up the women’s football pyramid and on Sunday, they get a chance to test their credentials against National League opposition when they take on Larkhall Athletic in the Second Round Qualifying of the Women’s FA Cup. The Moneys came through with a 4-1 extra time victory over Ilminster Town in the last round and have been rewarded with a tie against more opposition from Somerset, who have started the season well at the higher level. Moneyfields themselves have been in good form though and after winning the Division One title in the Southern Region League last season, they are currently among the front runners in the Premier Division having won both of their opening matches, and manager Karl Watson admitted to Women’s Soccer Scene that he and his team are ready to face the Larks. “This season Moneyfields Ladies have really got their teeth into the world’s biggest and most prestigious tournament - the FA Cup,” he smiled. “Blessed with a bye in the Preliminary Round we have since beaten Eastleigh 2-1 at the Silverlake Stadium in our season curtain raiser . That was followed by a long haul down to Ilminster, where a super human display from the home keeper took us to extra time before we eventually ran out 4-1 winners to book our place in the next round. “That next round is why we’re here today and very excited to take on the huge task of trying to get past Larkhall from the league above ! “We all know what the magic of the FA Cup is about and even at my age, I shut my eyes at night and picture us at Wembley thinking big and dreaming bigger and who knows if we get through against Larkhall. Can we...could we…let’s have a go and see what happens.”
