Memorial Orchard

This spring, the trees in Wendover Memorial Community Orchard off Rope Walk Meadow have given their best blossom to date. This is very appropriate since the orchard was planted in 2014 to commemorate the 59 soldiers who did not return to Wendover after World War 1 and this month is the end of the centenary as the Peace Treaty was signed 100 years ago. See page 10 for the last in our series Wendover Remembers. Many thanks to Mike Senior and Val Moir who researched and wrote the articles. This is your last chance to send to Wendover News any information about this period, especially to do with local people and their activities or the built landscape.

Best Kept Village 2019

Last year Wendover won the Buckinghamshire County Council Best Kept Village. Tom Walsh, chair of Wendover Parish Council, reminded us: “Wendover is a Village. It is though, a big village. That means, with regard to the competition for Best Kept Village,

when judged by population, we fit in with the towns.” This illustrates the eternal confusion in Wendover about the title town/village. We’re entering again and judging starts in June. Don’t worry about the title! See page 32 for more.

Workload Pressure

Recent reports in the national media have highlighted the growing shortage of GPs and increased workload pressures in primary care. Westongrove has not been spared these challenges; to respond we are working to develop a more diverse frontline clinical team, comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physician associates and paramedics. We are also planning changes to the way we offer care to those who have an urgent problem that needs attention on the same day. To help us to manage demand we ask that you always consider whether the help and information you need is available from reliable on-line sources such as NHS Choices, or from local pharmacies, before you contact us. We also ask that if you call us needing help, you give basic information about your problem to the Receptionist who handles your call, so that she can direct you to the most appropriate person to help you. Face to face appointments with a GP are timed for 10 minutes. If you have multiple problems please make sure that you start with the one that is most important to you, as the doctor may not be able to deal with all of them at a single visit.

Medicines for Hay Fever

If you suffer from hay fever we recommend you start preventive medication before the season commences in June. Antihistamines such as cetirizine or loratadine, steroid nasal sprays (e.g. beclomethasone or Beconase), and sodium cromoglicate eye drops, are all available over the counter (OTC) at pharmacies. In line with NHS policy, we do NOT provide prescriptions for such medicines, except where the medicine cannot be provided OTC, as for example for nasal sprays in young children. Over the last 8 months, we have engaged with the DIO to understand their plans for the RAF site and to put our vision across to them. Therefore we welcomed the recent consultation (Wednesday 8 and Saturday 11 May) and to see their plans and understand their direction of thought. Let’s be clear. The RAF needs to relocate and the money to do so. The DIO is tasked with raising these funds through disposal of the site. AVDC has a housing target to meet. Therefore, the most important item on both their Halton agendas is selling the 82 acres designated for housing (1000 homes). This, Phase 1, is about getting approval by the inspector and inclusion in the local plan. HDCIC exists to ensure an overall long-term vision is bought into by all stakeholders. Piecemeal planning is painting by numbers. It produces a picture but never a masterpiece:

Crucial for those within, surrounding and passing through the area. The recent consultation majored on housing with acknowledgement of heritage,

environment and sport, all of which we have championed. However, there was no mention of 1. Enterprise/jobs (though we understand the DIO is open to exploring opportunities) 2. How participation and performance sports facilities will truly reach their potential. These are just 2 areas detailed in our response to the DIO. The design of the proposed viaduct over the A413 still poses challenges for future traffic volumes, with BucksCC, AVDC, and EK all discounting the evidence documented by HS2 in 2013 based on DfT’s traffic projections. Meanwhile EK and Bucks CC are looking at the need for footpath and cycleway provisions under the viaduct; which appears to have legal precedence compared to avoiding traffic congestion on London Road and the bypass.

Wendover Remembers

June 1919

The Armistice, signed on 11 November 1918, brought fighting to an end on the Western Front, but it was not until 28 June 1919 that the Treaty of Versailles marked the end of the war with Germany. In addition to the main Versailles Treaty there were to be five other separate peace treaties. The Treaties of St Germain, Neuilly, Trianon, Sevres and Lausanne, concluded between 10 September 1919 and 24 July 1923 marked the peace arrangements with Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary and Turkey. The harsh terms of the Versailles Treaty caused great resentment in Germany. This, together with the myth, to be fostered by Hitler, that the German army had been “stabbed in the back” by their politicians, sowed the seeds for the Second World War. As the French Marshal Foch said in June 1919: “It is not a peace, it is an armistice for twenty years”.

On behalf of the Navy, CaptainSurgeon Max Onslow-Ford, thanked the people of Wendover for their support for the men at sea. Brigadier-General Lionel Smith of the Royal Horse Artillery said how proud he was to be one of the Wendover men fighting for his country and how grateful he was that now the day of peace had come they could look forward to happier times. Lieut-Colonel G S Smith of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force responded on behalf of the Colonial Forces. He referred to the ready manner in which they came forward to help the Mother Country in their time of need. Personally, he had the great honour in 1914 of coming over with the first New Zealand and Australian Force. Corpl. J S Holland represented the Air Force and spoke of the remarkable growth of this branch of the H.M. Forces. Sergt-Major Freeman, in charge of one of the Labour departments at Halton responded as an old soldier, paying tribute to the manner in which the rank and file had carried out their duties, and pleading that in civilian life ‘the lads’ should now have every consideration. HS2 June is a busy month for the Wendover Parish Council HS2 team. We are addressing issues raised by Nusrat Ghani MP in the latest negative response from the DfT. They still refuse to put up an expert to meet and to show us why our Mined Tunnel won’t work. In fact, they’ve now accepted that it’s a basis for a workable design, but they say that the Bill won’t allow variations and there’s no way to do the environmental impact assessment changes. Of course if you read the Bill it seems pretty flexible, well, when HS2 want it to be it is, and if you look at the horrifying and permanent destruction that HS2 currently proposes for our area, I’d say that using any excuse with the word “environmental” in it looks like bare faced cheek. Wendover has been able to submit evidence, on HS2, to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) session with the DfT. You can read our submission here wendover-pc.gov.uk/post/ written-evidence-for-the-public-accountscommittee. This is a significant step forward

for WPC. We understand that the PAC and Rachael Maskell MP as we continue to already has serious concerns regarding HS2 promote the Wendover Mined Tunnel in costs and their management capabilities. Westminster. HS2’s Operational Noise is back on the agenda. Many people in Wendover were unconvinced by the original Noise Model carried out by HS2 Ltd. It showed that hundreds of houses would be adversely affected by train noise. So, it came as no surprise when EK, the contractor charged with designing the railway, were equally unconvinced and remodelled the whole thing. We are having separate meetings with both HS2 and EK on noise this month. WPC is working with Ellesborough PC and Stoke Mandeville PC to focus on matters to our north. We are waiting for a briefing from HS2/EK. Then we will be cooperating in arranging a public event to discuss matters that affect the residents of all three parishes. We’ll keep you posted on that. We have meetings arranged with Lord Berkeley

The Tax Payers Alliance is no friend of HS2. In a meeting that WPC had with them late last year, we discussed a plan to draw attention to the large number of alternative transport projects that could be funded by the HS2 budget channel more effectively. The result is “The Great British Transport Competition”. Its report was launched by David Davis MP and shows how if the HS2 billions were invested in a better way, the benefits to the north could be realised and additionally many other areas transport priorities could be addressed too. These further investigations will help to inform our design as it matures, and will take place from mid-May to July 2019.

Local News Lenten Lunches 2019

Thank you to everyone who supported the Lenten Lunches, the last of which took place on Tuesday 16 April. This includes the kind volunteers who made the delicious vegetable soups and provided bread and butter. Thus fortified, the majority stayed on for the Lent Course, led by Rev Remco van den Heuvel, which this year was based on the film Les Miserables. £300 was raised and split between a local charity, Aylesbury Town Chaplaincy which organises the Street Angels, www.aylesburytownchaplaincy.co.uk; and an international charity, Bega kwa Bega, www. bkbuganda.org/, supported locally, which helps about 400 orphans in Uganda with the skills they need to live active, independent lives.

Inclusive dance instructor Anisha Gangotra teaches in High Wycombe (Bucks) and Maidenhead (Berkshire). She teamed up with the MS Trust, a national charity that supports people affected by multiple sclerosis, for MS Awareness Week 2019 to get people dancing. The inclusive dance-along was streamed on Wednesday 24 April, with people from across the country taking part to embrace ‘moving with MS’. Anisha has two sisters living with MS so she knows first-hand the impact the condition can have. Anisha says, "The great thing about inclusive dance is that it’s accessible for all. I have students with disabilities and long-term conditions dancing alongside people without disabilities.

London Marathon

Gordon Wong ran this year: "First time in the London Marathon, and had a super day soaking up the atmosphere and cheers. Happy to get round in one piece really, and not to let down the three charities I was fundraising for: The Pace Centre; Starlight Children’s Foundation; and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. I wore the vest of the latter in recognition of my brother-in-law who sadly succumbed to the disease seven days before the race. "Thanks to the Wendover friends I saw, and big thanks to Claire and the girls for making it to three different cheering spots. Gratitude also to Ian Sansbury and his team, especially Lacey, at The Pace Centre for all their encouragement throughout the training.

Andy Williamson also ran: "On 28 April I had the pleasure of running the London Marathon for the Chilterns MS Centre in Wendover. This year’s marathon was the fifth London marathon that I have run and the atmosphere was as amazing as ever. You run the 26.2 miles with over 40,000 other people who all have a shared goal, so the camaraderie with your fellow runners is great. Not only that, but it’s enhanced by the million spectators that line the course and cheer you along. This year’s marathon was made even more special as it was the first time my eldest daughter Gracie watched me do it. I was lucky to see her on four occasions along the route, and her big hug at the end made me forget the pain in my legs!!

"The MS Centre does amazing work in supporting people and their families who suffer from the illness, and I was honoured to run the marathon for such an amazing charity. Everyball Tennis Summer Camps

After seeing excellent success with their Easter Camps, Everyball Tennis are looking forward to hosting their Summer Tennis Camps over a 6 week period. With different sessions for ages up to 16 years, the Everyball coaching team are on hand to help attendees with learning and improvement of their tennis skills, as well as fundamental skills that they can use throughout life. If you are looking to start your child’s tennis experience early then there are Sporty Tots tennis sessions for 2½ to under 4 year olds. The coaches use a mixture of fun games and tennis activity to spark your child’s love for the game and develop early skills such as balance and coordination. Parents take part in the sessions too! You will be getting hands on with your children’s tennis experience and taking part in the games, making for a fun family morning session (9:00-9:45 am). For the older children we have the Mini Tennis Camps or the Junior Tennis Camps. The Mini Tennis Camp (for children 4 to 7 years) runs from 9am to 12 noon, offering 3 hours of fun mini tennis with activities and coaching designed to get children ‘playing the game’ as soon as possible. Plenty of fun games and challenges. For the Junior Tennis Camp (for children 7 to 16 years) the coaches focus on learning the game and then developing and sharpening the attendees tennis skills. They cater for all ages and standards and make sure everyone is included and having fun with the different games they have on offer. The Junior Tennis Camps run from 9am to 3pm - in addition the option to take up Everyball’s post camp chill-out hours means the day goes to 5pm.

New for 2019 - on the Junior Camps, you can book the session with lunch, or bring your own packed lunch. Mini Tennis Camps include a mid-morning break with a drink and snack, but lunch is not included. Children are required to bring with them a water bottle, hat, sunscreen, waterproof jacket and wear comfortable tennis gear. Wendover Sparrowhawks Netball Club

Last month saw the completion of the Aylesbury Winter League and a really successful season for both the Blacks and Golds. As Summer approaches, the Sparrowhawks are delighted to be hosting the Summer League for the second year after a great debut last June. Local clubs and teams in the Aylesbury area have once again enthusiastically embraced the chance to continue playing netball for as many weeks as they can. Our Youth Squad (Age 13-16) is also continuing to expand and play in the Aylesbury Youth League.

We are also offering Adult Camps every morning 9am to 12pm noon, which is open to all standards whether you are a beginner, getting back into tennis, or a regular competitive player. If you want to develop your skills or fine-tune your strokes, our coaches have drills and games that will help with both of these in a fun and relaxed 6 July will also see the return of the hugely popular Mixed Charity Tournament, held at atmosphere.

Wendover Cricket Club

The senior teams have enjoyed a good start to the season, albeit with 2 losses. In the opening game at Little Marlow, batsmen ruled and despite scoring 273, still lost by 34 runs; Anshuman Pandit 86 and Basil Varghese 80. In the Mid Bucks League, the 1st XI had a big win by 147 runs over Hawridge & Cholesbury, with Tom Jackson, George Robinson and Varghese all scoring 50’s and bowlers Tom McPartlan taking 5-20 and G Robinson 4-9. However, they were badly defeated by Holmer Green in their 2nd game, whilst the 2nd XI have 2 wins out of 2 for their best start to a season in 20 years. They beat Downley 2nd’s by 90 runs, Jean-Marc Maujean 84 and David Phillips 4 wickets and in a low scoring game at Haddenham, they won by 5 wickets due to a fine 69* by Nick Morley.

Wendover Bowls Club

The outdoor season has started quite well with some good results against other clubs. The cold wet weather has not been too kind with some matches being something of a test of endurance. One thing that has become apparent is that some clubs are having trouble raising teams. We even had to “lend” some players to the opposition on one occasion which puts you in a strange position, do you bowl brilliantly against your own club or just well enough not to be a disgrace. Fortunately it was a friendly match and everyone was happy. Our new mower is proving a hit with the mowing team. We now have the roller but await ramps to get it down onto the green. The open evenings proved popular with significant numbers turning up to give bowls a go. Some of them were frighteningly good. They all seemed enthusiastic and let’s hope they were encouraged enough to join.

RAF Halton Elated RAFA40 Paramotorists Land The take-off was last minute due to an unexpected favourable at RAF Halton Two paramotorists, Flt Lt Giles Fowler, who holds the British record for paramotoring at 21,746 feet, and recently qualified paramotorist Paul Mockford, have successfully flown over 40 former or current RAF airfields in two days. The 263 mile navigation and endurance marathon started at the former RAF Goxhill in Humberside and finished at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire, going over some of the busiest civilian and military airspace in the United Kingdom.

A paramotor is a paraglider wing combined with an engine, which is attached to the pilot's back. The motor (2 stroke or 4 stroke) provides enough power to make the take-off run just a few paces long. The paramotor and paraglider are easily transportable, fitting into the back of a normal car.

The route took the team from Goxhill near Hull, down through Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Day one was planned to finish at Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton. Day two ended at RAF Halton Airfield.

Like many other people, we are trying to reduce our use of plastic. It’s important to keep in mind that the enemy is single use plastic, not all plastic. The plastic mugs we’ve had for 40 years aren’t a danger to the planet. Also, plastic is much lighter to transport than eco-friendly glass, so it saves tons of fossil fuel. Nothing is ever as straightforward as it seems. The issues which triggered our journey were a combination of the David Attenborough effect and a dark suspicion that what we put into the recycling bin may not actually be getting recycled. You hear stories. As our contribution to Wendover Fighting Plastic, this is a list of what we are currently doing, with websites where appropriate. It lasts for ages and you don’t need conditioner. Remember when conditioner didn’t exist? We weren’t wearing barbed wire! This is as far as we have got. We’re trying to think of vinegar as the universal cleaner, but can’t as yet get past the chippie smell. Of course other people have made different choices on their journey against single use plastic. Local Face: Gary Rance Gary is an Amersham boy who married a Wendover girl, Katrina, and they have lived here very happily since 1986. When he left school in 1975 he wanted to be a gamekeeper but the only jobs on offer were metal turning or wood turning. He flipped a coin and started at Joseph Reynolds in Chesham. Wood turning was a very well known trade in Chesham, a wood based industry using products from Chiltern Forest, now famous for its beech trees. This was a very traditional business which still used steam to power the belts. There were no safety glasses, dust masks or dust extraction in those days, only piles of dangerously flammable sawdust everywhere. How things have changed now that health and safety are taken seriously! Gary was apprenticed to Jack Peacock. His apprenticeship was over a three year period. He was put on piece work, which meant that he would make one item until he became proficient and only then was he moved on to another project. The items this factory made were mostly household/kitchen items. In those days wood turning was not a skill regulated by exams, but NVQs have since been introduced and Gary is always encouraging youngsters into the art and craft of wood turning. By 1990, Gary’s experience of the industry was completely modern and his talents were recognised as he was invited by Racal (now 3M) to demonstrate their machinery at a big exhibition in Wembley. Demonstrations are performed with safety glasses rather than a dust mask so that the audience can hear his pearls of wisdom. Gary is a favourite on the demonstration circuit; he managed 72 in one year. These have been around the UK, Ireland, Scotland, Europe and North America. He has already been booked for Wizardry in Wood 2020, turnersco.com/wiw, an event happening once each 4 years which is limited to only 10 people exhibiting their work. Gary has been invited to every one. Gary started his own business wood turning from his own workshop in 1986 and he has never looked back, counting over 500 clients to date. One of Gary’s first recognised pieces was a gavel used by HMQ Elizabeth II in the 1980s. He has also made gavels for Sotheby’s, especially small portable gavels for their trainee auctioneers. Stuart Linford has put other Royal commissions his way including making

a telescope from Victory timber for Prince Andrew and various pieces for Viscount Linley. The latest commission was for a wooden baby’s rattle presented to Prince Harry by the Worshipful Company of Turners of London. In 2012 he won the competition Strictly Wood Turning, organised by Axminster Power Tools to find the quickest and best quality producer of items such as wooden eggs and balls. Gary now has a reputation as one of the fastest turners in the country - he is reputed to be able to turn 100 apples in a day! In 2017 a bowl with apples and pears was Lot 31 in an auction of wood turning art, which raised £500 for Freedom from Torture, providing care for torture survivors arriving and living in the UK. Gary was recently commissioned to make a pair of wooden candlesticks for St Mary’s. His bowls are used as prizes, eg - for the Forestry Commission. He has made DVDs instructing wood turners and sells his own design of wood turning tools. Go to garyrance. co.uk. Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

Once again, I have been voted into the chair of WPC. A chairman’s job is mainly to facilitate the work of the council’s various committees and to ensure that all councillors get a fair say at the monthly council meetings. I do work closely with our professional staff and often act as a link between various organisations, councils and the community. Contact me through The Clocktower if you ever have a question or a comment. One of WPC’s priorities is always to make sure that Wendover gets its fair share of policing. I have good news on that front. The police have improved their communications with WPC in recent months and they have reported some recent success in dealing with antisocial behaviour in Wendover. The police do need your help though. The community needs to be the eyes and ears by feeding information into the police system. To report any concerns in your neighbourhood please email WendoverNHPT@thamesvalley.pnn. police.uk. This service is not monitored out of office hours and is not for reporting crimes or incidents. To report these please contact Thames Valley Police on 101, this is a nonemergency number. You can also register at thamesvalleyalert.co.uk to receive free crime alerts and info about where you live. Another priority that I think I share with many other Parish Council Chairmen is to attract new councillors. PC’s are now more social enterprises than talking shops. They are the single most effective way that an individual can influence the way that the place that they live in develops. Things that matter, like play areas, allotments and green spaces are only part of what we do. How we relate to other

strands of government on planning, transport with some distressed phone calls from and environmental issues. How we campaign parents who couldn’t find the last bunny, but against the things that our community doesn’t their children were refusing to give up! like and how we support the good things that Wendover needs. They’re all part of being a Parish Councillor. Why not try it? Tom Walsh
