Warwick SU is a democratically-run membership organisation, with every student automatically becoming a member upon enrolling at Warwick.

YOUR VOICE We are the independent voice of students at Warwick University – although the SU receives an annual grant from the University and works closely with it, we are not a part of its formal structure, and are thus able to represent your views at a local, regional and national level. Each year, the student body elects seven student officers, all of whom take a year out from their studies to preside over the Union as your representatives. These Sabbatical Officers – or ‘Sabbs’, as you’ll commonly hear them referred to - work alongside our dedicated staff team to deliver a wealth of services for you!

YOUR SABBATICAL OFFICER TEAM 2014-15

You can get involved in campaigns. Want to make a difference? Run to become a member of student council! ACADEMIC & EDUCATION

One of the primary purposes of Warwick SU is to represent you. Whether it’s to your academic department, to the University, the local council or nationally, we’re a great place to get support and help. We work alongside the Advice Centre to deal with academic issues such as appeals and complaints, along with wider issues surrounding Higher Education – remember that our collective voice is much stronger than a lone one!

Student Reps are elected each year to sit on the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC). This is the place to get your voice heard! Every department has an SSLC made up of a mix of students and staff, and departmental issues and successes are discussed at these committee meetings.

education@warwicksu.com 024 7657 2779 Level 2, SUHQ

If you fancy getting involved and becoming a course rep, you’ll get the chance to in the Autumn Term as each department runs coursewide elections in the first three weeks of Term 1. This is a great opportunity to really influence and shape your degree experience! For more information on when your course elections are taking place, you can talk to your departmental administrator. For more information on the SSLC/student rep system, head to: warwicksu.com/sslc.

warwicksu.com/education

Warwick SU loves to get involved with the wider community. The Inspire project is one of the ways in which we do this, as dozens of students head out to a number of schools in the local area and conduct myth-busting about what it’s really like to go to University. This is not only a great opportunity for school students to gain some real insight into the life of a University student, but it also allows our students the opportunity to give back to the local community and potentially inspire someone who wouldn’t normally consider University as an option. The scheme runs all year long, and we’re always keen to get more people involved so be on the lookout for more information! Contact either the Education Officer via education@warwicksu.com or the Inspire coordinator via inspire@warwicksu.com.

Last year, the SU’s Hungry for Feedback campaign helped to bring about a 4-week turnaround on the feedback you receive on your academic work. This year, we want to use the campaign to ensure that the feedback you’re getting is of a high quality – keep a lookout for more on this later in the year. We’re particularly keen to get examples of your worst, and your best, pieces of feedback – feel free to email us via education@warwicksu.com with examples of what you think makes feedback ‘good’.

I’m here to deal with any degreerelated problems that you may encounter and help support you so that you have the best experience possible. We all come here for the same reason: to get a fantastic degree (and have a little fun along the way!), and I’ll be working hard this year to make sure this happens. I also want to hear your thoughts through SU initiatives like the Hungry for Feedback campaign and Student-Staff Liaison Committees (SSLCs). My office is in SUHQ and you’re always welcome to pop by and talk to me about any problems you might have. I wish you all a brilliant year to come! Maahwish Mirza EDUCATION OFFICER

WELFARE

We hope that you will have a fantastic time studying at Warwick – however, sometimes problems or questions do crop up, and we are here to help you out in these instances. The SU’s Advice Centre team are extremely experienced and will help to resolve your problem or find the right person to talk to. Our service is free, confidential and independent from the University - most regular enquiries concern personal issues, housing (e.g. finding accommodation or complaining about the condition), course-related issues, funding and finances, immigration issues, and complaints & disciplinary proceedings within the University. Our advice webpages contain plenty of information, so please do be sure to check them out: warwicksu.com/advice If you want to contact the SU Advice Centre, you can do so by email, telephone or by visiting us in person (we’re based on the top floor of SUHQ). To guarantee an appointment it is always better to contact us ahead of time and arrange one, but if you come to the Advice Centre without an appointment we will do our best to see you as soon as we can.

CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION

LOOKING FOR ACCOMMODATION

Arriving on campus and moving into halls can be daunting, but there are lots of people to support you as you make the transition to life on campus. Make sure you find out who your Residential Tutor is, as they will be someone you can talk to and raise any concerns you may have. In the event that you have problems with your campus accommodation, there is a fault reporting system – however, if you can’t get it sorted or want some advice on your rights, why not contact us?

If you are arriving and need help finding accommodation, we are here to guide you through your search. We have a House Hunting Guide in the ‘Useful Publications’ section of the Housing pages, and can also go through your housing contract with you to help you understand your rights.

OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION Our website (warwicksu.com/housing) contains useful information about your rights and how to resolve problems with accommodation. If you are moving into off-campus accommodation and have any questions which can’t be answered by talking to your landlord or agent, please take a look at these webpages or contact us and we will do our best to help you.

HOUSING DAY CAMPAIGN One of our major campaigns throughout the year involves helping first-year Undergraduates understand the process of looking for accommodation for their second year. There are many myths surrounding offcampus accommodation, which means that students often feel pressured into signing a contract. In November there will be a Housing Day event, where we will provide detailed information so you can make an informed choice. Making a bad choice too early could mean that your second year becomes a nightmare – there really is no need to rush!

ACADEMIC MATTERS We hope you enjoy your course and are able to succeed in your chosen path. It is important to get to know your department, particularly your Personal Tutor, so that if things aren’t going as well as you hoped you will feel able to talk to him or her. It is also crucial that your department knows if there are things going on in your life (e.g. illness, injury or bereavement) which may be affecting your studies, so that this can be taken into account. For more information, please see our advice pages!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Warwick welcomes thousands of international students each year, and there is plenty of support to help you settle into your life here. The SU Advice Centre is part of that support network and we will try to answer any questions you might have (or, if we don’t know the answer, direct you to someone who does!) about being in a new country. In addition, we are able to offer advice on various immigration issues, including helping students apply for entry clearance corrections when the period of leave on a visa has not been granted in accordance with Immigration Rules.

SETTLING IN Arriving in a new place without your normal support network can be a challenge – however, please be reassured that there is lots of support available within the University if you need it. The SU Advice Centre Team has full knowledge of the support systems available on and off-campus, so we will be able to guide you if you are unsure who to speak to. If you are looking for support in settling into your campus accommodation, be sure to speak to your Resident Tutor; likewise, if you are having problems settling into your course, speak to your Personal Tutor. Find out more about University Student Support at warwick.ac.uk/services/ student-support-services

ON A SERIOUS NOTE... Freshers and the start of a new academic year is a great time to party, make new friends and have fun. We want you to enjoy it, but we don’t want a bad decision taken now to ruin your year or your future! If you are drinking alcohol, know your own limits and think about your personal safety don’t take unnecessary risks. The University of Warwick has a zero-tolerance policy to illegal substances, including cannabis. If you are found to have an illegal substance in your campus accommodation, the University will require you to leave your accommodation with 4 weeks’ notice – even for a first offence. Social media is a great way to connect with new friends and let old friends and family know what you are up to. Nevertheless, we urge you to think before you post – remember that once a photo or comment is out there, there is no way of knowing where it will end up or when it will resurface! Please respect each other - if someone feels uncomfortable about what is going on and chooses not to join in, don’t pressure them into participating. If things do go wrong and you find that you are being invited to attend a meeting to discuss allegations concerning your behaviour or actions, you should seek advice from the SU Advice Team.

Love Community is about doing what we can to respect the area we are living in and the people around us. It also provides opportunities to get involved in making it a better place! The campaign encompasses all of the information in our Off-Campus Moving In Guide, social action projects and the Union’s Leave Leam Tidy/Keep Cov Clean initiatives. These aim to ensure that students leave their houses, flats and local areas in good condition at the end of the academic year, and that useful possessions get reused or recycled.

Coming to university or living away from home for the first time is exciting, but it can also be challenging. Part of my job is to offer students advice regarding housing, immigration or sexual & mental health. The other key part of my role is to encourage student activism, so that when you are passionate about an issue I can advise you on how to go about organising a campaign or getting involved in one. I am also here to help you out with any personal issues you may have, opinions you want to vocalise or ideas you want to turn into actions, so please don’t hesitate to drop me an email or pop into my office in SUHQ. There are plenty of existing campaigns to get onboard with – here are just a few of our most prominent: International Women’s Week, Love Community, Black History Month, Warwick Uni Food Co-op, Blood & Bone Marrow Donations and more. In addition to the work of our campaigning societies, we have officers specifically elected to represent Liberation groups and the Environment, so there is sure to be something for everybody! Feel Good focuses on ensuring that we take care of our bodies in order to keep our brains healthy. Check out warwicksu.com/feelgood!

DRINK RESPONSIBLY Our ‘What If?’ campaign exists to help ensure that students know the full effects of alcohol, and encourage us all to enjoy our drink safely. We want you to have nights to remember here, not nights you forget! Check out warwicksu.com/whatif for more information.

Much the campaigning here at Warwick comes through the great work that our societies do – whether that’s running themed events during the year or campaigning on a huge range of issues including the environment, personal wellbeing, liberation or ethics & social justice. If there is an issue which is important to you or you want to get involved in a society campaign, get in touch with them. You can also get advice from staff in the Student Resources Room in SUHQ, who can direct you to the relevant societies or help you start up your own individual campaign! For the full list of Warwick’s campaigning societies, visit warwicksu.com/societies /campaigning. Fundraising is conducted through RAG – for the latest totals or to find out more information, head to warwicksu.com/rag.

Campaigns Convention

We see a campaigner as anyone who wants to make a positive change, whether that’s big or small! You can also find out more about (and provide feedback on) the campaigns the SU runs throughout the year! We will be offering speakers, showcasing success stories, top tips and group sessions on how to run successful campaigns - all at different levels to suit everyone from the beginner to the experienced!

SPORT

The University of Warwick offers a huge variety of sporting opportunities - with exceptional facilities all over campus, there’s sure to be something that takes your fancy! With such a wide range of choice, Warwick enables both experienced athletes to compete at international level and complete beginners to learn from scratch. We have seen novices start a new sport at Warwick and become coaches, black-belts and national-level competitors during their time here! In addition, the Warwick Active programme creates even more ways to get involved in sport with plenty of fun, one-off events and casual sports sessions. Finally, you’ll find our gym and state-of-the-art climbing facilities in the Sports Centre, which is located at the heart of campus. So, how are you going to get involved this year?

WHAT IS WARWICK SPORT? WARWICK ACTIVE Warwick Sport is a partnership between the SU and University which oversees all sporting activities on campus and ensures that you’re able to engage in sporting activity at the most cost-effective level for all. A small fee of £58 for the entire year gives you unlimited access to a vast range of sports facilities, including halls, courts, tracks and the swimming pool. For an extra £30 you can take part in our extensive club programme.

sports@warwicksu.com 024 7657 2776 Level 2, SUHQ warwicksu.com/sports

We have 69 vibrant sports clubs for you to join as either an elite performer or just a social member. Details of how to get involved can be found at warwick.ac.uk/sport

There are also many unique events throughout the year which are predominantly run by our volunteer Student Activators, who are constantly shaping the Warwick Active Programme. If you are interested in becoming an Activator, email Jen: J.Emeny-Green@warwick.ac.uk.

SPORTS FIXTURES

FOCUS TEAMS

Like most Universities in the UK, Wednesday afternoon is set aside for sport at Warwick. Almost every course keeps this time free from academic activity so that you are able to go and represent Warwick across the country. We have a strong reputation across all the British Universities & College Sports (BUCS) leagues, and it’s only getting stronger!

Focus Teams are selected by Warwick Sport to receive extra assistance as a result of excellent performances in recent years.

Don’t worry if you haven’t reached national standards yet and are just looking for casual involvement - every club offers beginners’ sessions that are open to all abilities, while our Warwick Active programme always has something to offer too!

12 12

Warwick Active is a programme which is available to the whole community. It offers a broad range of opportunities, from weekly Hall Sports to Intramural Leagues and even sports courses in golf, self-defence and more. It’s a great way to socialise, meet new people and boost your confidence, as well as get fit and active!

11 teams have been chosen for the 201415 programme to benefit from a mentoring scheme, fitness classes, high-level coaching, strength & conditioning training, plus nutrition & psychology sessions from experts. These teams are: Archery | Badminton | Women’s Football Men’s Lacrosse | Women’s Lacrosse Swimming | Women’s Tennis | Men’s Tennis Triathlon and Road Cycling Men’s Volleyball | Women’s Volleyball.

Getting involved in sport leads to all sorts of opportunities – be that representing your team at elite level, making friends for life, enhancing employability for graduate recruiters or contributing to charity events.

LEAGUES & LADDERS If club sport isn’t your thing, our ‘Leagues & Ladders’ cater for all levels of ability and are the perfect way to keep active and social. Described by one regular as “the heart of University life”, make sure you join your hall, department or society team – alternatively, just get some friends together and start your own. Hall Sports Representatives will be elected early in Term 1!

Whether you want to be a competitive or casual member of Warwick Sport, or just occasionally use the gym, we want you to help maximise your sporting experience. If you ever have any queries or suggestions, visit my office in SUHQ or drop me an email – I will be more than happy to help you in every way I can! Ruby Compton-Davies SPORTS OFFICER

SOCIETIES

From Warwick Student Cinema to the Good Food Society, there really is something for everyone here at Warwick SU. Societies bring together students who are interested in or care about a certain issue or activity, or simply want to try something new. The Union supports these societies by providing funding, training and facilities for their activities - we have more societies than any other Students’ Union in the country, so you’ve made the right choice by coming to Warwick! To see what we can offer you, visit warwicksu.com/societies or check out the directory at the back of this guide.

SO - WHAT DO SOCIETIES DO, EXACTLY? Our societies cover just about every area of interest or activity you could imagine. If there isn’t a society for something you’re interested in, you’re more than welcome to get a few people together and start one up!

societies@warwicksu.com 024 7657 2781 Level 2, SUHQ warwicksu.com/societies

Joining a society is a great way to try something completely new, make new friends or simply have a lot of fun. There are also opportunities to run societies, which will get you dealing with budgets, organising trips and picking up skills that you won’t get from just doing your degree.

HOW DO I JOIN? Join the Societies Federation via the Societies tab on the SU website. It’s only £19 for one year’s membership and, once paid, you can join any societies you like. This money goes straight back to societies in the budget, helping to fund all the wild and wonderful events that they put on, as well as funding SU services that societies need to support them. Societies usually charge around £3 for membership - an absolute bargain considering the amazing experiences you’ll have all year! Even better, many of our societies are free to join. You can join any of the societies online at warwicksu.com/societies or at the Societies Fair.

14 14

SOCIETIES FAIR The Societies Fair happens during Week 1 at the start of the year, and is spread over two days. Each society will have a stall at the fair. You can chat to the people running the society and get a taste of what each of them involves. Make sure you join your Hall Society for free (e.g. Jack Martin Society if you are living in Jack Martin), as these are a great way to get to know people living in your halls who aren’t sharing your kitchen. Hall societies raise money for charity, run trips, organise socials and often enter our sports leagues. If you’re feeling really eager to get involved and fancy running your Hall Society this year, elections will be taking place towards the start of Term 1. When you find societies you like, you can grab a barcode from them and buy your memberships there and then. Alternatively, you can join online at any time via warwicksu.com/societies.

SOCIETIES AWARDS Societies make such a valuable contribution to student life that we hold an awards ceremony in Term 3 to honour their achievements. We also single out several individuals for special recognition and pay tribute to their outstanding input into society activities. All the award-winners from the 2013-2014 academic year are marked in this directory.

Running a society can throw up challenges. I’ll be here to support the exec teams who put so much effort into making societies great. We try to cater for all interests at Warwick, but if you feel that there’s an activity not represented within the SU, by all means gather the support to form your own. The opportunities really are endless! You can see what all these societies have to offer in the Societies Fair at Week 1. Throw yourself into whatever sounds interesting – you’ll be amazed at the rewards. I look forward to hearing all your opinions and experiences! Isaac Leigh

Various items can be delivered to lectures (including chocolates, pints or even a single red rose), giant animals appear round campus and a whole plethora of events grace the evenings at the Union. There’s even time for some mischief! ‘Gnomings’ (involving a target being cling-filmed to a tree and covered in flour, water and baked beans) offer some cheeky opportunities for revenge - perfect for that flatmate who hasn’t been doing their share of the washing-up. Our aim is to provide everybody who visits the summit a platform upon which to exchange knowledge, think creatively and debate current issues – all in the friendly environment of the University of Warwick.

REAL ALE FESTIVAL The Real Ale Society hosts the biggest and best student beer festival in the country. With over 120 beers plus ciders, fruit wines and meads to try, there is guaranteed to be a drink that will suit everyone’s palate!

Every year in Term 2 we take on our archrivals, Coventry University, to see who can claim the title of the greatest sporting institution this side of the A46. Spanning the entire spectrum of sporting activities with over 40 fixtures, our teams compete for Varsity points. Thus far, Warwick remains the undefeated Varsity Champion for 23 years and this is the one event of the year that gets the whole of campus involved to support TEAM WARWICK, so it’s definitely not something to miss!

The Real Ale Festival is all about introducing people to beer in its cask-conditioned form. Many people have never tasted a good pint of bitter before, and still more are unaware of the huge variety that is available under the ‘ale’ heading.

At the end of the summer term is the annual sporting social highlight, the Sports Ball. At the end of each year, we also honour the incredible work of our student societies at a glittering awards ceremony in the Arts Centre. Make sure you come along and celebrate with us at an amazing evening of dining, dancing and spectacular society performances!

It is an event not to be missed and tickets are much sought-after, often selling out in less than a day! Giving clubs and individuals the chance to celebrate their achievements over the year, the Sports Ball is the perfect way to end the sporting season.

UNION DEVELOPMENT

As a Students’ Union, our primary purpose is to represent, advise and support our members. However, as you would expect, the staffing, time and resources required to deliver this come at a cost. Although the SU receives an annual grant from the University and works closely with it, this funding on its own is insufficient to sustain the day-to-day running of the SU. Consequently, we run a variety of commercial services to bridge this gap and help support our noncommercial membership services.

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES Warwick SU is a charity and a not-for-profit organisation. Unlike commercial high-street venues, we do not exist to make a profit - the money we bring in through our commercial outlets (bars, restaurants, cafés and nightclubs) is directly reinvested back into other services for Warwick students, including our Clubs & Societies, Advice & Welfare services, Campaigns, Democracy and more. As a registered charity, it directly benefits you to use our services - every time you buy an event ticket for The Copper Rooms, a baguette in The Bread Oven, a pint in The Dirty Duck, a meal in Xananas or a cup of coffee in Curiositea, that money goes right back into the pot to fund student activities. Put simply, without your support and loyalty, we wouldn’t exist! Here’s a rough breakdown of where your money goes when you use any of the SU’s commercial services:

Hey, I’m Rob and I’m your Democracy and Development Officer this year! Warwick SU belongs to you - every pound you spend in SU outlets goes straight back into the services and activities that will play a massive part in your life as a Warwick student.

Warwick Students’ Union is a charitable membership organisation which exists to represent the views and interests of all students at Warwick University. We also run significant commercial services whose surpluses are used to subsidise welfare, representational and developmental activities for our members.

The Trustees of Warwick SU are fundamental to the success of the charity and are responsible for its financial sustainability and strategic direction.

We are looking for two additional volunteer Student Trustees who can commit 4 to 6 hours per month, largely in early evenings. To be a Student Trustee, you MUST be a student at Warwick University, be over 18 years old when you take up appointment and have no unspent criminal convictions. We would really like to maintain a wide variety of experiences and skills on our Trustee Board and welcome applications from all students in any of the demographic groups that make up the student body here at Warwick.

You can visit the Charities Commission website which contains good advice and guidance on being a Trustee: charity-commission.gov.uk If you are interested, please send a CV and covering letter detailing why you would like to be a trustee at WARWICK STUDENTS’ UNION to

DEMOCRACY

Every Students’ Union in the country is run directly by its members, and each year the student body elects 7 students as their representatives who work full-time ensuring that this is the case. But they aren’t the only students who have a say in how the SU is run – any student can be involved, and every student has an equal voice.

: How does it work? If every student acted independently, the system would be highly inefficient and there would be a lot of mixed messages put out. Therefore, different groups of students are able to elect their own representatives to sit on a decision-making body known as Student Council. If a student wants to enact change or raise an issue, they can do so through the support of their elected Councillors. There are two different types of change, which in turn can be brought about by two key decision-making bodies:

democracy@warwicksu.com 024 7657 2788 Level 2, SUHQ warwicksu.com/democracy

30 30

Once a term we hold an All Student Meeting. Any student can attend these meetings, raise issues and debate the Union’s priorities in the form of Union Policy. Students hold campus-wide campaigns in favour of, or against, a motion put to an All Student Meeting. After the meeting, any student can vote online and a decision is made. This is where Policy is set.

After decisions have been made, it’s up to Student Council to make sure things happen. Policies and Regulations & Principles mandate an Officer to do something or change the way the Union operates, and it’s Student Council’s job to ensure this occurs. They hold Officers to account. Unlike with Policy, Student Council can amend Regulations & Principles on your behalf.

We use Union Policy to lobby external organisations (the University, government, local businesses). Policy represents the ‘collective voice’ of the student body on big issues (like our stance on free education). Since these Union policies represent the student voice, they must be voted upon by students at an All Student Meeting to be passed.

Union Regulations & Principles are essentially the rules governing how the Union operates on a day-to-day basis (for example, what we sell, when we open, how we support students). Whereas Union Policy mandates the Union to campaign on an issue, Regulations & Principles are not able to do this and are purely operational.

The issue…

Imagine you are a second-year student. After a year at Warwick, you have noticed there aren’t enough water fountains across campus and you and your classmates often have no choice but to buy bottled water.

Speak to your Representatives… You get in touch with the Second-Year Councillors through the Students’ Union website. They agree and inform you that they will bring this up at Student Council.

Raised at Student Council… The Second-Year Councillors raise the issue at the next meeting. Other Councillors and Officers agree that there is a lack of fountains. The Welfare & Campaigns Officer agrees to speak to the University about this issue. This task is added to the Action List, meaning the Welfare & Campaigns Officer must report their progress back at the next meeting.

Officer meets with the University… Students’ Union Welfare and Campaigns Officer meets with the Director of Campus Services to discuss the issue. The Director informs the Officer that there simply isn’t enough money in the budget to install these additional fountains.

Creating Union Policy… At the next Student Council, the Welfare & Campaigns Officer explains that they were unsuccessful. Instead, the Officer brings a motion forward to make it Union Policy that students want more water fountains. Student Council agrees and the motion is sent to the next All Student Meeting.

Using our ‘collective voice’… Since a Policy represents the voice of all students, it must be voted upon by all students. Several days are given to debate, discuss and vote on the issue. The results are announced and the motion passes. The Students’ Union launches a small campaign on the website and social media explaining the need for more fountains on campus. The Welfare & Campaigns Officer goes back to the Director of Campus Services - together with the pressure of an online campaign and the fact that students have voted on this issue, the University has no choice but to reallocate funds to provide more water for students.

This is an example of Democracy in action and how any student can use the system to bring about change!

NUS The NUS is an organisation made up of SUs from across the UK. Being part of the NUS provides Warwick with resources and support throughout the year, along with national campaigns for students on fees, funding, housing, social welfare and more. Furthermore, anyone can run to be an NUS delegate at one of their conferences.

Run to be an Officer Each year, students run to hold Officer positions in the Union. Any student can stand to be an Officer (if they are within the group they’d be representing) and any student can vote in the elections. Officers are all current or former students, and are here to represent you and your interests. Past Officers have done amazing things for students, so it’s really important that the right people are elected! Officer Elections are held in Term 2. There are three types of Officers: Sabbatical Officers Faculty Representatives Liberation Officers For more info about this year’s Officer Team, visit warwicksu.com/officers.

Vote! Voting takes just seconds and is all done online. It’s really important that your voice is heard, whether that’s in an election or through voting at an All Student Meeting.Warwick SU has the genuine ability to improve your time here at Warwick, but only if you help us to make a difference!

don’t forget to visit warwicksu.com

Example...

Run to be on Student Council As a Councillor, you represent a large cohort of students who rely on you. It is your responsibility to ensure their voice is heard, as well as holding Union Officers to account and ensuring they direct the Union appropriately. Elections for Student Council take place early in Term 1.

Each year, students elect a dedicated Postgraduate Officer UNDERGRADUATE to the Sabbatical Team, whose role is to address concerns about all aspects of postgraduate life and study here at the University. This year, your PG Officer is Andrew Thompson, and his office can be found on the second floor of SUHQ. He is here to make sure that the Students’ Union looks out for the interests of postgraduates in all areas of student life. The Postgraduate Officer sits on University Committees articulating the views of Warwick postgrads, pushing for ways to make your life at Warwick even better such as more office and study space, better pay for postgraduates who teach, and greater incentives for students to stay in postgraduate study.

Being a postgraduate student can often make you feel like you have to stop having fun... My advice though is to stay involved in the sports and societies you already enjoy, or try completely new ones. I joined Warwick Rowing as a beginner during my Masters and it was one of the best aspects of my year, making me physically fitter and introducing me to a whole new friendship group I would otherwise never have met. I would say that being a postgrad added to my experience, since I was free to row when the undergrads had their exams! Nick Swain MA in Creative & Media Enterprises 2012-14 BSc Accounting & Finance 2009-12

As an international postgraduate, I loved interacting with students from all over the world via my course and the SU’s cultural societies. Besides that, I was a member of Student Council, where I learned how important the Union is for all students - whether UK-based or international, undergrad or postgrad. By participating in these activities I made a really diverse group of friends, learned much more about other cultures and had a wonderful first year of my Masters. Lieke Bos

Hi, my name is Andrew and I’m your Postgraduate Officer for this year. Whether you make up the nearly 50% of the student body who is a postgraduate or you are looking to advance to PG study, I am here for you! As Postgrads, whether research or taught, you form a vital part of our vibrant and diverse community: as students, teachers, members of Sports Clubs and Societies, as inspirational figures and as friends. Warwick is one of only six SUs in the country with a Postgraduate Sabbatical Officer – the SU really does care for all postgraduates, and always strives to improve the representation you receive, so all of your feedback and involvement is really important. My job is to work for you, so do make sure to get in touch if you want any help or advice! Andrew Thompson
