OPEN THE DOOR TO OPPORTUNITY 2022

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

MESSAGE A Message From the President

Wallace State is opening the door to opportunity to students across the region. The College experienced the largest enrollment increase in 10 years during Spring 2022, serving more than 5,500 students. That 29 percent increase was the highest increase over the same period of any college in the Alabama Community College System. A large part of that growth can be credited to a successful effort in recruiting more students for the College’s Dual Enrollment program, new and expanded program options, and the College’s emphasis on in-person learning with the waning of the pandemic.

The College broke ground on the Winston County Community Learning Center in Arley to provide the citizens there and in surrounding communities access to Adult Education classes, serve Dual Enrollment students in the area, provide skills training, and more. The College’s Center for Career and Workforce Development worked overtime to expand opportunities for apprenticeships, internships, and other on-the-job training options for students.

Construction is completed on the new Technical Education Center for Welding and Entrepreneurship and opened to students during the Spring 2023 semester. Several new programs were announced, including a Radiation Therapy, Banking and Finance, Logistics Management, and Robotic Welding. A new Summer Bridge program was initiated to help new high school graduates get up to speed in math and/or English to avoid the time and expense of taking remedial courses, as well as get an introduction to campus and college life.

Wallace State’s athletic teams brought home six conference championship titles. SkillsUSA teams brought home a record number of medals in the state competition and made a great showing at nationals as well. And many more students were recognized for their achievements.

Please keep reading to learn more about these and other accomplishments of the past year.

Four critical areas of focus include Alignment, Acceleration, Acquisition, and Achievement.

ALIGNMENT includes the goals of refining college entry to embrace the College’s One Door concept and its role as a bridge between learners and employers, as well as serving as a center of learning to meet local and regional workforce needs and expectations. These goals will be met through effective and innovate alignment in curriculum, foundational skills, and career-focused competencies.

The goal for ACCELERATION is to recognize a foundational principle that success is measured by meaningful employment that drives personal and professional well-being.

The goal for ACQUISITION is to develop multiple strategies of resource acquisition to support a culture of learning and workplace success.

The goals of ACHIEVEMENT include to stand firmly for the transformative ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, striving always to eliminate systemic barriers to student success, and to hold as a foundational principle that change will be grounded in a culture of evidence marked by integrity, accountability, valuing employees, and continuous institutional improvement.

ONE DOOR

Wallace State launched its One Door campaign, encouraging students to Open the Door to Opportunity by choosing Wallace State. No matter from what path students come to Wallace State, they will start at Lion Central in person or via the online portal and receive the same WSCC student experience, streamlining their path from entry to completion.
