Welcome to the first edition of the Lion‘s Roar for 2024.

As we embark on the journey to Airbase/ Air Wing and see the traditional dynamics of the Station change and evolve over the coming year, we on the Editorial Team are considering how to grow the Lion’s Roar to incorporate these changes.

Over the coming editions, you will notice that the Foreword will be written by different personnel from across the Station Senior Leadership, focusing on the different areas within our community. With new members joining the Editorial team, we can also look forward to new features within the magazine and welcome any suggestions for additional features.

I’d like to thank everyone who has submitted an article for this edition and hope you enjoy the magazine. If you would like to submit your own article telling of the adventures within your Team, Section or Sqn, activities within the Station and wider local community, events past, present or future, these can be sent to BENLionsRoarMagazine@mod.gov.uk. 500-700 words is perfect, but we can consider shorter or longer articles. Foreword

This publication is a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and camaraderie that defines RAF Benson. Within these pages you will find stories of achievements, glimpses into our collective journey, and demonstrations of outstanding effort from across the Station which makes it so unique and exceptional.

Indeed, exceptional performance and recognition for lifelong dedication to the Service is a great place to start this foreword. It was no surprise that no less than twelve Benson personnel from across the Station were mentioned for their outstanding contributions in the King’s New Year Honours Awards. Each should be rightly proud of their achievements from Commanders Commendations to MBE, congratulations!

Now to the uniqueness of Benson. Fully rested from a very generous Christmas grant period, 2024 has commenced with a new degree of vigour and pace in response to global events in the Levant. Elements of the FHQ have been working tirelessly to be ready to deploy to support Chinook in the Middle East. Similarly, the Joint Helicopter Support Squadron, our most operationally

deployed part of the Station, has had no less than six of their nine teams at readiness and deployed across the globe. This, combined with individual augmentations and of course the fantastic contributions Puma makes in Brunei and Cyprus, serves as a very salient reminder of the commitments placed upon Benson personnel. We are contributing to and preparing to support operations globally, all the time.

However, we do so much more. From hosting engineering recruits on an Engage and Inspire event, to an utterly unique F1 in Schools event, an insightful and frank Women’s Network Q&A with Director Legal Services, and another thought-provoking annual TEAMWORK Day: the richness of Benson shines through. You will see a plethora of additional activities and engagements that the station has undertaken as you read through these pages.

So, what a journey 2024 has been so far. What’s coming next? At the top of the list, and most imminent to the publication of this edition, is the hotly anticipated transition to the “Wittering Model”. Joint Helicopter Command will begin to hand the supporting Station Elements of RAF Benson back to the Royal Air Force.  Simply

put, RAF Benson will be split as an “Airbase” and then the flying forces the “Air Wing”. It will be a huge effort for all of Team Benson, but one that I am confident will bring greater capacity, improve our working environment and, crucially, the level of investment in the Station for our people.

Then, a little further afield, we must consider the near future for the venerable Puma. With 230 Squadron and 84 Squadron now fully established overseas and support from 33 Squadron and 28 (AC) Squadron now mature, it seems an inevitable time for change. Time remaining for Puma is sadly coming to an end, and the soon to be formed Air Wing must plan a transition to the Airbus H145 Helicopter. Whilst only in the early stages now, this will be a huge focus for the Air Wing for this and next year. A challenging time then, but we are clear our top priority throughout must be that of our people and their families.

In that, thank you all for your continued commitment to your teams and the collective contributions you make for Benson. Without you and the whole Benson Community, RAF Benson would not be the success that it is.

AGILE SPEAR

On Monday 11th September, RAF Benson deployed Aviation Task Force 3 to Swynnerton and Leek Training Area in Staffordshire to participate in Exercise AGILE SPEAR, a keystone event in the Support Helicopter Force calendar that brings together the units that support Chinook, Puma, and many other rotary assets.

For those who aren’t familiar with what Aviation Task Force 3 is, it is described as the aviation equivalent of an Army battlegroup, where a combination of different aircraft types and their capabilities are bought together to produce greater effects and generate more flexible combat power. Within Joint Helicopter Command, there are Four Aviation Task Forces (ATF) that exist to support the Army’s 1st Aviation Brigade, with Aviation Task Forces

1 and 4 comprised of the Army Air Corps (AAC) Apache and Wildcat aircraft, and Aviation Task Force 2 consisting of the Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) Merlin aircraft. Aviation Task Force 3 is the Royal Air Force’s equivalent package of units and their highly qualified personnel that deploy with our Support Helicopters around the world. The flexibility of the concept allows units to either ‘plug-in’ to one of the other 3 counterpart ATFs or operate independently both as a small- or large-scale formation, with a central Command and Control function that plans and co-ordinates the activity.

Aviation Task Force 3 could deploy to deliver Support Helicopter capabilities in a UK Military Aid to Civilian Authorities (MACA), Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations and

Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (NEO/HADR), Peacekeeping, or Warfighting operations. Examples of recent deployments of ATF3 include the Op: PELEDA at the start of 2023, where a team from RAF Benson’s own Joint Helicopter Support Squadron (JHSS) deployed alongside Chinooks from RAF Odiham to Amari Air Base in Estonia, and in 2022, Pumas from RAF Benson deployed to Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania, also known as of Op: PELEDA. Both these deployments were in critical support to the NATO Enhanced Force Presence mission to bolster our European NATO allies.

The Task Force exercised this year comprised of Mobile Air Operations Teams (MAOT) from the JHSS, Tactical Supply Wing (TSW), Logisticians and Force Protection Gunners from 606 (R) Squadron, with Chinooks from 18 and 27 Sqn based at RAF Odiham in support. All the activity was coordinated by a deployed Command and Control team in the Avn TF3 HQ, ensuring the vital training was delivered to the team that will be ready to deploy on operations around the world. The exercise tested the teams in various battlefield scenarios whilst utilising Support Helicopters to help achieve their objectives, including force protection, troop movement, sustainment, and casualty evacuation training scenarios. Due to the ever-changing weather conditions, the team were consistently challenged in both the physical conditions, and the ability to change plans at short notice in order to accommodate the aircraft availability.

JHSS Op CLOCKWORK

Currently located 200 miles North of the Artic Circle, 4 members from JHSS 3 Troop are currently embedded with Commando Mobile Air Operations Team (MAOT). A combined team, able to break down into smaller teams and rapidly deploy at a moment’s notice, supporting ground and aviation units at CLOCKWORK.

Three Sqns of Aviation units from, 656 Sqn AAC, 845 & 847 Sqn Royal Navy, consisting of Apache, Wildcat and Merlin Helicopters have been deployed to Norway.

The team have helped all three aircraft types achieve vital training within the Artic, from snow landings to underslung loads in beautiful but unforgiving locations.

With experienced members of the team from previous Operations and Exercises at CLOCKWORK, the

whole section has been able to pass on their invaluable experience and hit the ground running. Such taskings include cross country skiing into locations, as well as driving the ever-enjoyable Bandvagn (BV)’s, often ending up at locations waist deep in snow.

Alongside the unusual entry methods to taskings, members from JHSS have had a very big jump into the deep end operating communications equipment irrespective of trade or cap badge, providing essential ground to air communications alongside Commando personal.

As the aircraft are now completing their competency training, JHSS & Commando MAOT now look forward to supporting multiple exercises and the yearly tradition of loading up the secluded cabins of the Norwegian National parks with essential supplies.

JHSS Falkland Deployment

JHSS have a constant presence in the Falklands, routinely deploying teams to enable vital helicopter support across the Islands.

Working closely with Bristow Helicopters and Search and Rescue, JHSS has had to adapt its processes to tailor and accommodate the new S-92 airframe. Although this has provided some challenges, the new aircraft has a greater carrying capacity and speed, making transporting the essentials to the remote radar sights faster and other areas much more efficient. The new airframe covers all that is required to operate efficiently in the Falklands, transporting air-conditioning units, fuels, personnel, rations, and NAAFI supplies.

Underslung Loads can vary depending on the time of year and what is required to provide support to those in the region. With the unpredictability of what equipment may arrive, it can develop and sharpen the team’s skill set and broaden individuals’ confidence in

adaptability. Recently, the team’s skill and knowledge have been tested by creating complex underslung loads for unusual equipment going to improve the remote radar heads around the Islands.

In addition to our primary role with British Forces South Atlantic Islands, the JHSS team have been assisting with some of the recreational flights for the other sections and families within the Mount Pleasant complex. The Helicopter Support Section offer flights to unique locations where they can get up close and personal with different kinds of wildlife. Not only for the avid bird watcher to be able to tick off the likes of the Southern Rockhopper, King Penguin and Black-bowed Albatross, but also provides the unique opportunity to see seals, dolphins, whales, and killer whales.

Cyprus

With almost a year under our belts operating the Puma on 84 Squadron, it is a timely moment to offer some reflections on how our transition out to sunny Cyprus has been!

For wider context, in November 2021, I was operating out in Kenya with the Puma hosting a visit by Commander JHC, with Puma’s future at the forefront of our question set to him… rumours had become rife that we were on the Defence chopping block. Sadly, at the time he was able to confirm the truth behind the rumour and that March 23 was to be the end of the line for the Puma Force. But… he did allude to a glimmer of hope that no replacement for Brunei’s 212s or 84 Sqn’s Griffin HAR2 had been found, and Puma could be extended to fill this capability gap. And so, we returned to the UK with fingers crossed for a stay of execution! As it turned out, just as we left for our Christmas breaks, the news came through that this was indeed to be the plan, with Brunei being the first stage to be enacted in September 22, followed by ourselves in March 23.

That year rushed by incredibly fast preparing to come deploy to Cyprus, although at this stage Squadron number plates were yet to be confirmed… 84 Squadrons fate hung in the balance! Fortunately, with the Chief of the Air Staff invited to the handover Dining in Night between Griffin and Puma, he was able to provide some clarity and confirm 84 Squadrons legacy continued!

Our role in Cyprus was to continue the fantastic work of the Griffin HAR2, conducting a traditional Search and Rescue role (although termed for various reasons as Emergency Response!), Aerial Firefighting and, traditional Support Helicopter and a fairly loose term of ‘Defence Engagement’. These tasks fit rather nicely with the shared Puma Force mantra of: Saving Lives, Serving the Soldier and Flying the Flag, that nicely serves both Brunei and 84 Squadron’s needs.

It should be pointed out that, for the Puma Force, Search and Rescue and Aerial Firefighting were completely new tasks that had never really been conducted in the 53 years that the Puma has been in service, and so the learning curve and was steep!

It turns out that whilst you can teach an old dog new tricks, it isn’t necessarily a simple task! Various issues have had to be overcome along the way, integrating a variety of new equipment onto the aircraft, developing training for the various new skills and all the boring paperwork that one has to have in place to make it all happen! On top of that the engineering burden of operating in a hot salty environment and trying to make a temperamental winch play ball! All difficult challenges overlaid on moving a Squadron and all their family members across the world at the same time; needless to say, it’s been a monumental effort by all involved making the transition a success!

In its first task of Aerial Firefighting, after overcoming a spate of early niggles, 84 Sqn assisted the Cypriot indigenous assets in tackling wildfires across the island. Fortunately, the Republic did not suffer fires to the same extent as the Greek Island of Rhodes which were widely reported in the news. The Sqn flying Puma Mk2 with its increased water delivery capacity vis-à-vis the Bell 412 ably assisted in significant fire events over the late summer.

In its Search and Rescue (SAR) role, crews, engineers and all Sqn auxiliary elements held 60 min readiness to be airborne 365 days a year. Outside of the firefighting season “RS60” jobs have included searches and Casualty Evacuation of critical emergencies. Crews continue training Emergency Response (ER) skills including winching

from cliffs and the sea as part of its primary role of life saving. Now in the winter period, Bambi Bucket (firefighting) training has continued, as well as all essential currency training to enable the ER cover into 2024.

Having previously been a support helicopter asset, the Puma has tried to play to this strength since deploying to Cyprus, taking advantage of its lift capability and operational pedigree. Working with the resident and standby battalions at Episkopi and Dhekelia, the Puma in its 12 and 16-seat fits has regularly assisted in planned moves and training serials. In her natural environment: low level and in formation, company moves have become regular jogging and tasking of this kind has been a regular occurrence due to Puma speed and reach.

Playing to her strengths, trooping has been a powerful means by which to fly the flag alongside our Cypriot partners. Where able, Cypriot National Guard troops have been moved alongside their British counterparts from 1 Lancs and 1 Rifles. Furthermore, the assistance provided in major firefighting operations within the Republic of Cyprus is a powerful tool in maintaining positive relations. Additionally, 84 Sqn has been utilised for VIP transport, tasks including the Defence Attaché, Cypriot dignitaries, ministers, and Secretary of States.

It has been an incredibly busy year, with an enormous amount achieved by a fantastic team, who have embraced the new role and lifestyle in Cyprus as

well as the incredible Squadron ethos on 84. As we look forward to our second year operating Puma, the focus will be on developing the deck winching capability to further our ER range of skills. Undoubtably the requirement will continue to work closely with

the troops of British Forces Cyprus over the next 12 months. Finally, we look forward to further work with our Cypriot partners within all three of our main effort strands. In 2024, 84 Sqn will continue to save lives, serve the soldier and fly the flag.

Finalists at the Defence Road Safety Awards

On 20 Nov 23, RAF Benson’s Road Safety Team placed 2nd in the annual Defence Road Safety Awards (DRSA).

The ceremony is an opportunity for Defence to recognise the dedication shown by units to improve road safety for their people, families, and local communities.

Road accidents continue to be a major concern in our community, resulting in countless injuries and fatalities. It is crucial that we take proactive measures to address this issue and ensure the safety of all road users. Personnel from across Station collaborated on road safety campaigns throughout the year, aimed at raising awareness and promoting responsible behaviour on the roads. The various campaigns included educational programs, public service announcements and increased enforcement of traffic regulations. The purpose was to educate drivers, pedestrians and cyclists about the importance of following traffic rules, wearing safety gear, and practicing defensive driving techniques. By empowering individuals with knowledge and skills, we can significantly reduce the number of accidents and save lives.

Additionally, the team pushed for improvement with the infrastructure on our roads. This involved implementing traffic calming measures and enhancing road signage and markings for better visibility.

Road Safety is a team effort, and we're all in this together! Let's spread the positivity and make every journey a joyful one by following our top tips:

Tip #1: Be a Superhero Driver! Remember, we all have the power to make a difference on the road so let's be courteous, patient and respectful to our fellow drivers. A little kindness goes a long way!

Tip #2: Traffic Lights! Always obey traffic signals and never rush through red lights. Let's keep the roads safe for everyone!

Tip #3: Embrace the Magic of Turn Signals! Turn signals are like magic wands that let others know where we're headed. So let's use them to spread the joy of safe driving! Indicate your turns and

lane changes, and watch the road become a happier place!

Tip #4: Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!

No, we're not talking about winning a race, but rather staying focused on the road ahead. Avoid distractions like texting or scrolling through social media while driving. Using a hand-held phone while driving can result in 6 penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine. Let's keep our eyes on the prize of arriving safely at our destination!

Tip #5: Seatbelts are Lifesaving! Let's make sure everyone in the car is securely fastened for a smooth and safe ride!

Santa Drop

SANTA TAKES TO THE SKIES ONBOARD RAF BENSON PUMA TO DELIVER CHRISTMAS PRESENTS

SANTA has made a flying visit to Oxford Children’s Hospital, trading his sleigh and reindeer for a Puma Helicopter from 33 Sqn, to deliver presents to poorly children donated from Benson personnel and their families, and over 35 local schools.

Flying from RAF Benson and passing by many of the schools in the local area to give children a glimpse of Santa, he landed at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Carrying sacks laden with over 200 presents and with the help of RAF Benson personnel, Santa handed out the presents to young patients who cannot be at home this Christmas, spreading Christmas joy in his popup grotto.

Organised by the Youth Activities Liaison Team at RAF Benson, the Santa Drop involved children from local schools right across the local area and donations from the RAF Benson service community. Flight Lieutenant Northcote, RAF Benson, commented: ‘’These flights allow us to engage with nearly 6000 school children and showcase the best of the RAF whilst achieving RAF training objectives. The impact on the children, at the schools, and Hospital, is priceless, and the team is honoured to represent the RAF’’.

Leaving more presents behind for the hospital teams to give to any new patients admitted over Christmas, Santa said ‘to allow my reindeer to save their energy for Christmas Eve, I called my friends at RAF Benson who offered me a lift in a helicopter that’s capable of getting into small spaces. It was wonderful and means I

could still deliver these very special presents.’’

Having given out over 1000 presents, the RAF Benson Santa Drop is now in its 5th year. Station Commander RAF Benson, Group Capt RoystonAirey said: ‘’ The Santa Drop is without doubt one of RAF Benson’s finest traditions. Being able to bring joy and Christmas cheer to children across Oxfordshire and in particular those in hospital is an absolute privilege. It is of course a whole force effort: support staff, engineers, Air Crew and not forgetting Father Christmas himself.”

F1 in Schools

On 24th and 25th January

2024 RAF Benson hosted the regional qualifying event for the F1 in Schools challenge in A Hangar which saw over 250 students, across 2 days, present, test and race model F1 cars down a 20-metre track. RAF Benson supported the F1 in Schools team with judges, RAF Engineering displays and the RAF Benson STEM team.

F1 in Schools is an international STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) competition for school children (aged 11–19), in which groups of 3–6 students must design and manufacture a miniature car out of the official F1 Model Block using CAD/ CAM  (Computer-aided design/ Computer-aided manufacturing) design tools. The cars are powered by CO2 cartridges and are attached to a track by a nylon wire. They are timed from the moment they are launched to when they pass the finish line by a computer.

The cars have to follow extensive regulations, in a similar fashion to Formula 1 (e.g. the wheels of the car must be in contact with the track at all times). The cars are raced on a 20m long track with two lanes, to allow two cars to be raced simultaneously.

The students are judged in 5 main categories.

Specifications judging.

Specifications judging is a detailed inspection process where the race car is assessed

for compliance with the F1 in Schools Technical Regulations.

Engineering judging.

The scheduled engineering judging interview session focuses on the application of CAD/CAM analysis, CAD data organisation, orthographic drawing, 3D render and use of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining.

Portfolio & Pit Display Judging.

Each team of students is required to produce an enterprise portfolio, engineering portfolio as well as a pit display. The portfolios are A3 size and should contain information about the team, their car design and manufacturing process, marketing techniques, project management, teamwork, and team identity. Teams are given an area to set up a pit display which is judged alongside their design portfolio by a panel of judges.

Verbal presentation judging.

In advance of the competition, teams prepare a timed verbal presentation to present to a panel of judges, outlining their project.

Racing.

Teams race their cars against each other on the official 20-metre F1 in Schools competition track. Points are awarded for reaction time racing as well as manual launch racing.

RAF Benson hosted the event in A Hangar and supported

with engineering display stands from Puma2 Support Flight, Armaments Engineering Flight and Survival Equipment Flight as well as the Benson STEM team. These stands gave an opportunity for students to engage with personnel in multiple different engineering aspects across the station. Students really enjoyed the stands and were able to ask personnel questions about engineering in the RAF as well as how military life is.

Across the 2 days the standard of the projects presented by all groups was extraordinarily high and impressed all those that attended and supported. Congratulations to all the winners and those moving onto the national finals later in the year.

A massive thank you to all that supported the event and helped to ensure it happened including FS Steve Vaughan, Fg Off I Campbell and Mrs E Watts as well as the F1 in Schools team for choosing to host a 2nd event here at RAF Benson.

Armed Forces Rapidplay Chess Championship

In November RAF Benson played host to the inaugural Armed Forces Rapidplay Chess Championship.

Players

The main Chess Championships, held in April, use a time control of 90 minutes per player with 30 seconds extra per move. Rapidplay chess is played with much less time available, in this instance 20 minutes per player with just 5 seconds extra per move, which led to some nerve-racking time scrambles in the late stages of some games.

The event was held at Sharland Hall which proved to be the perfect location, with plenty of space and a bar available for the evening social. Twenty-four players from all 3 Armed Services and the MOD attended the event including some experienced veterans and some players fairly new to the game attending their first live tournament. The tournament was contested over 8 rounds of chess, with 5 games on Saturday afternoon and 3 on the Sunday morning.

A number of Benson based players were in attendance including Cpl Ed Wride who made a good start on the Saturday with 2 wins and 2 draws seeing him sitting on a healthy 3/5 going into the second day. A/Sgt Paul Goodman made a return to ‘Over-The-Board’ chess after some time away and also put in a good performance, with 3 wins, 3 draws and only 2 losses in his 8 games.

The pre-tournament favourites led up to their billing however. Dan Wells from the MOD and Off Cdt Will Bradley from the Royal Navy both won every one of their games, recording just one draw when playing each other. An exceptional performance given the strength of the tournament. The two players fought it out in a blitz playoff, each playing one game with the white pieces and one game with the black pieces at a time control of just 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. Even

this could not separate them after Dan Wells won the first game and Will Bradley the second and they decided to share the honours, taking the title as join winners. Full results can be seen at https:// chess-results.com.

The Armed Forces Chess Association has seen a boom in membership over recent months

and hosts online and live events throughout the year. The next live event is the Armed Forces Chess Championships in April at RAF Wittering (DIN10-026 refers). Village in Bloom, Community Garden

Tadpole Garden Village (TGV) is a brandnew garden village situated North of Swindon and as a new community I wanted to bring residents together through horticulture.

Isought about doing this by entering the village into the RHS ‘Britain In Bloom’ awards. This is a national competition which encourages people to take pride in where they live, through Horticulture, Environment and Community. I am Co-founder and Chair of Tadpole Garden Village In Bloom and have a willing team of volunteers that make up the committee.

Together, we built a community greenhouse and maintain an allotment that grows fruit, vegetables, and plants that we use in village planters or donate to places such as homeless soup kitchens. We have installed 20 planters in the village and the same number of hanging baskets. As a community we run horticultural workshops

such as seed sowing, planting, pruning, hanging baskets to name but a few. Having successfully installed a ‘Thankful Village’ Memorial that allows residents to remember whom they wish, at a time poignant to them, we are now creating a memorial garden at the site.

Working with the local schools to encourage children into horticulture – we have planted over 150 trees and run horticultural competitions. Incorporating accessibility into our projects we have also been guest bloggers for ‘Gardening for Disabled’ as well as being a case study for Swindon Borough Council and their climate change work #bethechange.

In the four years that TGV In Bloom has been going, over £30k has been raised, mostly through national lottery grants,

although other local grants and donations have helped our projects come to life.

Having only been created four years ago, we were delighted to achieve a Royal Horticultural Society ‘Gold’ in this year’s competition. We also won ‘Best Innovation Award’ for our Children’s Garden competition and for refurbishment of a garden

for dementia patients at our local hospital.

Being outdoors, including gardening, is a recognised coping mechanism for stress and other Mental Health disorders, so we have brought a social element of gardening to residents, whilst trying to promote positive mental wellbeing. I have personally suffered with an eating disorder for 25+ years and have found great benefits in working as part of a community through horticulture.

Mental Health Awareness

The mental health of Whole Forces personnel is a complex and important issue.

Military personnel and families are at an increased risk of developing mental health problems due to the unique stressors they face, including but not limited to: deployments, separation from wider family members, and relocation.

MIND is one of the many organisations that provide support to people in the Armed Forces who are experiencing mental health challenges. RAF Benson is fortunate enough to have a strong relationship with MIND and, alongside private sessions, representatives from MIND Oxfordshire attend RAF Benson every Tuesday between 1215-1300. They offer a safe space for individuals to talk about their mental health with no requirement to book in.

As a part of the Health and Wellbeing (H&W) Strategy 2024-2028, Cpl Charlotte Turner and Fg Off Emily Palmer looked at ways in which RAF Benson could best support this charity in all it does for Benson’s Whole Force personnel and families.

Aligning with the H&W events calendar, Turner and Palmer set about organising the ‘Blue Monday MIND Bake Sale’. Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) and is labelled to be the “most depressing day of the year” due to the lack of events and socialisation following the festivities of the Christmas break. Even though there is no scientific evidence to back this claim, the occasion was capitalised on by using it as the perfect excuse to eat cake and raise the morale of all on Station.

The event was hosted by SHQ and supported by many areas on camp, both in publicising event details and in attendance. The cake was, as cake always is, well-received by all and created an excellent

opportunity for individuals to catch up after the Christmas break and mix with people from all areas across Station.

Special thanks to Sgt Jayne Moran, SNCO PS, who took time out of her busy schedule to talk to attendees and offer advice, and to all the SHQ staff who contributed to the event by providing the baked goods for the day.

The day was a great success, not only for talking about mental health and its challenges, but for raising over £250 for MIND.

Oxfordshire Mind visit RAF Benson every Tuesday, we offer one to one emotional support, mindfulness relaxation classes, workshops on managing

stress and one day mindfulness retreat workshops to all serving personnel, families, and civil servants, so please join us over at the Learning Centre.”

NEW DEPLOYMENT GUIDES

Deployment Information, previously known as deployment pack ups, often varied in content and quality from Station to Station.

The RAF HIVE Service introduced three new Deployment and Detachment Support Guides in November 23, offering one resource to access deployment information for RAF Service Personnel and, most importantly, their family members.

Now accessible to all Serving personnel and their families, and unlike previous versions, these new guides have been tailored to specific groups: one for Serving personnel (SP), one for family members (such as parents, spouses, or partners), and one for Serving personnel with children. Additionally, each guide will be customised by local HIVE staff to provide unit-specific information on the support available to family members of deployed personnel.

These refreshed guides mark the beginning of a wider review, aimed at enhancing the support provided to our serving personnel and their families, during detachment and deployment. This in turn, heralds the beginning of a wider review of communications to RAF families, primarily through RAF HIVE. Through recent families’ forums conducted by RAF Community Support Staffs from HQ Air Command, RAF Community Support recognises a need to get ‘back to basics’ with a refresh of communication channels and methods of reaching out to families, to ensure they are well informed and able to engage with the RAF whenever possible.

The Community Development Officer organises and send out invites to deployed familiies lunches, and for the children, there is a cuddly toy (one off item for each child under 11 years), ‘Hello from

Home’ book packed full of activities including a ‘Chuff Chart’ to count down the days, Detachment maps, Deployment Colouring Boxes, Talking Tins, Teenage Journals, ‘Stay Postive Wall’ charts, Activity books & RAFA Storybook Wings activity boxes. If you are a Service Person working at RAF Benson and your family live away from unit, please let us know and we can arrange for your

family welfare grant (FWG) to be transferred to another unit HIVE Information Officer (HIO) so that they can claim it and support your family from there.

RAF Benevolent Fund launches new Lived Experience Network

The RAF Benevolent Fund has recently launched a new Lived Experience Network which aims to increase inclusion in the RAF Family.

The new initiative will bring together a group of serving and former RAF personnel, and partners and spouses, from across the UK to share their lived experiences of the air force to help shape the Fund’s service offering and drive innovation at the charity. The Fund is currently recruiting volunteers to take part in the Network.

Volunteers who join the Network can help the Fund in a variety of ways, from completing surveys, joining focus groups, or participating in long-term working groups for internal projects. All volunteering opportunities will be remote roles and can be done from home.

The RAF Benevolent Fund provides financial, emotional, and practical assistance to serving and retired RAF personnel and their families. This includes grants to help with financial difficulty, mental health support, Airplay youth clubs, and more.
