EDITOR’S LETTER Editor wins nearest to the pin at Eastern Star

Editors letter…. Youngsters everywhere are making the golfing headlines. Rory McIroy is definitely on a roll and seems to relish the spotlight, and is already a multi-millionaire. Young 15 year old Lydia Ko, a Korean born New Zealand based amateur winning the Canadian Open was quite sensational. She became the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history, and Tiger was already a professional before she was even born! Then sixteen-year-old Chinese amateur Jing Yan breezed through qualifying to tee off in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool last month. Here in Thailand we have our own youngster’s winning big trophies with sisters Moriya and Ariya Juthangarn. Ariya was American Junior Golf Association 2011 Rolex Junior Player of the Year 2011.

Now Ariya, 16, has been granted a pass into Ladies European Tour Qualifying School in December even though she doesn’t meet the 18-year-old requirement. Moriya her 18 sister will play the first stage of LPGA Q-School as well. As the sisters chase cards on separate tours and continents, Ariya will travel with father Somboon while Moriya will travel with mother Narumon. The Amateur boys will be out in force as the Asia - Pacific Amateur Championship arrives in early November at Amata Spring in Chonburi. International Golf moves to Asia after the amazing European win at the Ryder Cup. Tiger will be appearing in KL at the CIMB PGA Classic, Rory is turning up in Singapore, plus Bubba, Sergio and Lee will all enjoy Thai hospitality here to contest the Thailand Golf Championship in early December. In this issue we catch up with the owner of Amata Springs, check out three more golf courses in Bangkok, Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin, preview the Asia - Pacific Amateur Championship and follow the Thai Caddie Championship. Don’t forget if you want to receive regular information on discounted green fees or hotel rooms, then send me an email to editor@thaigolf-news.com and we will add you to our growing mailing list.

GOLF NEWS... Thailand Golf Championship 2012 Still at School…

Rory McIlroy maybe still known as a young sensation, but recently it has been the girls that have been grabbing the headlines. Amateur sensation Lydia Ko from New Zealand carded a final round 5-under par 67 to win the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open at The Vancouver Golf Club last month.

At 15 years, 4 months and 2 days, Ko became the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history, eclipsing the previous mark set by Lexi Thompson, who was 16 years, 8 months and 8 days when she won the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic. She also becomes only the fifth amateur in LPGA Tour history to win an official event and the first in more than 40 years, the last being JoAnne Carner, who claimed the 1969 Burdine’s Invitational. Sixteen-year-old amateur Jing Yan breezed through qualifying to tee off in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Liverpool last month, becoming the youngest Chinese female golfer to ever play in a major tournament. Yan was one of only four amateurs to make the cut and shot a stunning second round score of 69. The Beijing-born teenager has been a member of the China national team since she was 12 and is a graduate of the HSBC China Junior Golf Program – she also won the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge in Singapore in 2008.

Thailand can boost a truly top sporting event when the 2nd edition of the Thailand Golf Championship takes place from 6th-9th December 2012 at Amata Springs Golf Club near Chonburi. Lee Westwood is back to defend his title against a very strong field lead by Bubba Watson, the 2012 Masters Champion, Hunter Mahan the 2012 World Golf Championship Winner, plus Louis Oosthuizen Simon Dyson, Charl Schwartzel, Darren Clarke and the inform Sergio Garcia. They all love competing on this challenging 18 hole championship course, that uniquely ferries the players on a boat to the island 17th green. Westwood’s first round of 60 last year was his lowest ever round in a tournament and he came close to making 59 which has never been achieved on the Asian Tour. Apart from the golf, they all have time to soak up the Thai culture with most top international players and wife’s and partners staying at the St Regis hotel in Bangkok. After a long hard season, no wonder such a stellar field have agreed to enter. Golf, sunshine and a lot of Thai hospitality is hard to resist. For more information on the tournament and ticket details check out www.thailandgolfchampionship.com In form Sergio back for second visit!

This latest development follows hot on the heels of last month’s landmark victory which saw a China junior team beat the USA in their own backyard at the USA-China Youth Golf match at the CordeValle Golf Resort in San Martin, California. Earlier this year World No 4 Shanshan Feng became the first player from mainland China to win a major when she claimed the LPGA Championship. The boys were not to be outdone, when 14-year-old Chinese golfer Andy Zhang becoming the youngest male player ever to qualify for a major when he took part in the US Open earlier this summer.

GOLF NEWS... Most Powerful Man in Golf Business. Asia’s Top Amateurs Compete at Amata…

Thailand is hosting for the first time the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship from November 1st-4th 2012 at Amata Spring Country Club near Chonburi. This is the only tournament in Asia created by the Masters Tournament from Augusta and the R&A under the auspices of the Asia Pacific Golf Federation (APGC). What makes this event especially unique is that it is the only tournament where the winner is actually guaranteed a place in the 2013 Masters at Augusta. Also the runners up get a chance at qualifying for a place in the Open Championship next year. Thongchai Jaidee is this year’s Honary Ambassador, and do not be surprised to see Billy Payne from Augusta and Peter Dawson from the R&A supporting the young players. Japanese sensation Hideki Matsuyama, currently the world’s second-ranked amateur, has confirmed he will attempt to win a third successive Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in November. Matsuyama from Japan will be back to defend his title against 120 players from 36 member nations of the APGC. Entry is free on all four days. Here is your chance to check out the stars of tomorrow at one of Thailand’s top courses.

Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management and development, celebrated an historic evening at the 2012 KPMG Golf Business Forum in Italy, after the company’s founder, CEO and Chairman, Dana Garmany, received the illustrious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award,’ won in previous years by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer. The award is recognition of Dana’s significant contributions to the golf industry over the last 30 years, whereby the company now operates in over 25 countries and at over 200 venues around the world. The evening also saw Golf Inc. unveil its eagerlyanticipated ‘Most Powerful Man in Golf Business’ list. Crowning an extraordinary day for Troon’s founder, Garmany topped the list for the second straight year, ranking ahead of some notable figures in the golf industry, such as Jack Nicklaus (#2), Wally Uihlein, CEO of Acushnet (#21) Tiger Woods (#24) and the world’s #1 player, Rory McIlroy (#30). “I accept this award on behalf of all the Troon associates, whose commitment and passion to the golf business are the very reason I am stood here today,” commented Garmany. “It’s been a good run and it’s truly an honour to be amongst friends and recognised industry leaders to accept this award.” Dana founded Troon Golf in 1990, utilising his experience in the golf and hospitality industry to produce quality playing surfaces and off-course hospitality, which is completely unrivalled in the golf industry. Troon’s reputation is underlined by the calibre of venues around the world in which the company currently operates, including the Troon North in Arizona, the company’s founding venue, Indian Wells in California, Kapalua, Hawaii, The Grove, England, and Turnberry in Scotland. Troon is now seeking partners in Thailand to work with and to benefit from being associated with a major international brand.

New Faldo Course in Vietnam…

Laguna Lăng Cô Golf Club on Vietnam’s Central Coast, designed by Sir Nick Faldo is scheduled for a soft opening in December. The multiple-character layout, part of Laguna Lăng Cô, a major new tourism development by Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, has all the makings of being a star golf attraction in the region. Three years after the launch of Montgomerie Links designed by Colin Montgomerie and Danang Golf Club’s Dunes course designed by Greg Norman, the opening of Laguna Lăng Cô is poised to position the Danang-Hoi AnHue region as Vietnam’s top golf tourism destination. “This is a stunning and very diverse piece of land with gently rolling terrain, splashes of sand throughout and an impressive array of natural design features,” Faldo said when he began the design process two years ago. “Our layout will incorporate sand dunes, rice-paddy fields, trees and scrub, wonderful exposed rock formations as well as a section of dramatic coastline and a routing that will visit each of these features on both nines. Two months before its soft opening, it is obvious that the sixtime major tournament winner’s promise has been fulfilled. As the 6,958-yard par-71 course is prepared for a full launch in March 2013, to be attended by Faldo himself, it is shaping up as a wonderful example of creative design that blends perfectly with the natural environment. The Laguna Lăng Cô resort is situated near Lang Co Bay, framed by a three-kilometre beach in the Chan May region of Central Vietnam, an area renowned for its pristine coastline, natural scenery and proximity to UNESCO World Heritage sites. The complex includes Banyan Tree and Angsana branded hotels and spas, villas and residences available for sale. For more information, visit www.lagunalangco.com

The man behind Amata Springs… SR: I think its a few reasons. Firstly Thailand is a Smiling country and everyone loves to visit Thailand and take their vacations here, and Thais are very friendly. Secondly we originally prepared our golf course to a professional standard and it is still maintained and managed by professionals to a very high level. I think the Asian Tour and Overseas players feel it is a fair and challenging golf course and this definitely help us convince the sponsors to come on board to support this tournament. TG: I know that at the 2011 Championship the players we spoke to genuinely did enjoy playing the course. This year you have invited Bubba Watson the Masters Champion to compete in Thailand for the first time. With his driving distance, do you think he will perhaps demolish some of your longer holes? SR: No, I think he will be beaten by the long rough and the Amata winds! TG: Amata is a private club; do you see this massive global exposure giving you the chance to open up the club to locals, expats and tourists in the future? SR: We cannot because we were built as a private club and we must support our members.

We caught up with Khun Sarath Ratanavadi, Director of the Tournament’s Organising Committee for the Thailand Golf Championship who is also the Executive Director for the host venue Amata Spring Country Club. The 2012 Championship from 6th-9th December will have several new international players including Masters Champion, Bubba Watson, Louis Oosthuizen and Hunter Mahan plus Simon Dyson, the inform Sergio Garcia, Charl Schwartzel and defending champion Lee Westwood joining the stars from the Asian Tour. TG: You have a wonderful golf course and every golf course owner would love to be able to host just one major tournament. Your club has hosted the Royal Trophy, the Tiger Woods Skins and a third major with the 2nd Thailand Golf Championship. What do you think attracts the top players to Amata?

12

• THAI GOLF •

ISSUE seventeen

TG: The TV coverage is fantastic, do you then perhaps see this promoting your real estate? SR: Not so much, we would like to have a good tournament where people can enjoy themselves, and enjoy watching the stars. We don’t think about selling the real estate then. TG: You have a big say in who you invite from the international players. Do you feel there is still an opening for more players to register, or is the entry list closed? SR: Of course there are still some people missing that we would like to invite. TG: Rory McIlroy springs to mind. Is he available? SR: I don’t know, but we would like to have him in the field. He is the current Number One player in the world, people love him and if we can invite him into Thailand we would love to have him play at Amata. It will depend on his schedule. TG: Did you approach Tiger Woods as well?

www.thaigolf-news.com

SR: I actually had a chat with his agent at the beginning of the year, but Tiger was not available in December. TG: Finally as the owner of this Championship Golf Club, are you also a good golfer? What is your handicap? SR: My handicap is current 4 and I drive around 250 yards, so I won’t be challenging Bubba! Mida Golf Club

Handicap 1 hole 12

Mida Golf Club is the one of the oldest golf courses in Kanchanaburi. It originally opened 20 years ago and was named Grand Garden Golf Course and then it changed to Lion Hill. However, nowadays it’s been changed again to Mida Golf Club. The Mida Group is famous for hotel management and they have developed the course, and have recently built a new locker room and superb swimming pool complex. It’s slightly unbelievable to find out that Mida Golf Club hasn’t been designed by a famous golf course designer. No Faldo, Norman or Nicklaus here. It was actually designed by a number of Water Control Engineers better known for Water Management.

17th hole from Green www.thaigolf-news.com

They seem to have done a very good job, using the local topography of the land and the wonderful mountains as the backdrop, to create a very interesting and challenging 18 hole par 72 par course. ISSUE seventeen

• THAI GOLF •

17

Mida Golf Club The 7,073 yards allows players to be able to draw and fade, and with four tee boxes skills are still needed. The front 9 holes is not so difficult, although there are quite a few doglegs, hidden water hazards and the odd well placed bunker or four. The greens are often raised up from the fairways, and accuracy is vital to avoid your ball disappearing down the incline. Since the distance of the course is relatively short, players can make a good drive and then their second shot should not require a long iron onto the green. They back nine is where the fun kicks in with Hole 10 a short Par 4 having a narrow entrance to a small green, with a water hazard on the left and bunker on the right. Hole 12 is Mida’s Handicap 1, and with a fairly thin fairway and a canal running down the full length of the hole, this can be a very expensive par 5. The green here also slopes towards the water so beware! Hole 18 Par 5 handicap 3 is the longest on the course at 592 yards from the blue tee. A long dog leg left means you are completely blind to the green which is raised up

high. Avoid the trees and you may get there in five if you are a big hitter. You need good positioning and planning with each shot here if you want to end your round with the par. The course is in good condition and all the time you are aware of playing in a wonderful natural setting with trees, lakes and the majestic mountain peaks as the backdrop. Their clubhouse has recently been upgraded, and has large modern male and female locker rooms, driving and chipping ranges, pro shop, Thai massage plus a restaurant and Resort for those planning to stay overnight. It takes around two and half hour’s drive from Bangkok. The course is away from the centre of Thong Pha Phum, and turn left to Ban Kao which takes only 20 minutes. It is fully of facilities such as resort, swimming pool, driving range and restaurant with the valley view and so on. Another Bangkok Gem…

View of the 1st Hole

The Vintage Golf Club continues to welcome golfers of all ages, who just like to have a friendly round of golf in some beautiful mature surroundings. Owned by the Central Group, this 18 hole par 72 golf course is around 45 minutes from Bangkok center, along the Bangna – Trad Expressway at around the 27 kilometer mark. Opened in 1996 this course was designed by American Arthur Hills, who has cleverly made use of the lakes and fantastic variety of trees and shrubs that cover the whole 6,720 yards. Being relatively flat you can avoid using a cart here if you want and maybe gain some valuable exercise as well. The course starts with a relatively easy par 4, and then onto a short par 3 follows beside a lake. As you go further along the course there are numerous wide fairways and fairly flat but fast greens, so your score card will start to look quite impressive. The hole that seems to catch us out regularly is their 10th which is a par 5, 496 yard dog leg to the right. Looks fairly simple from the tee box, but beware of the small clump of trees on the right. Best to aim left and then you will have a clear second shot. Also be reminded that the green here needs serious respect as it slopes towards the water.

20

• THAI GOLF •NEWS ISSUE • seventeen ISSUE nine

I personally liked the 17th with the shrubs around the tee box. It seems a long par 4 but it is only 378yards. Beware of the bunker on the left, but possible birdies here. Holes 9 and 18 both have water hazards and greens overlooked by the impressive Tudor Style Club House, and are great finishing holes. The staff are very friendly and well trained, with a good knowledge of the 18 holes. Locker rooms are a bit oldstyle, but are clean with Steam Room and Jacuzzi attached. They also have a professional Thai masseuse on hand to ease away any aches or pains. There is a large restaurant overlooking the 18th serving mainly Thai, Chinese, Japanese and some European cuisine. Overall the Vintage offers an enjoyable experience that will hopefully reward you with a respectable score as well!

The Grand Prix Golf Club

The world is full of good, average and even poor layouts over which to test ourselves, but few manage the accolade of ‘great’ which, in our view, means the sort of course you would try and play before you die, no matter the cost. Although we are waiting for The Grand Prix Golf Club to open, its reputation from those who have been lucky enough to visit this 18 hole course nestled in the foothills of Kanchanaburi, is that it definitely ticks all these boxes and more. It has a great layout, beautiful scenary, wide fairways, undulating greens, elevated tees, superb sunsets, water hazards, masses of bunkers and peace and quiet deep in the countryside. These pictures speak for themselves. If you are interested to join the Grand Prix Golf Club then check out www.bluediamondgolf.com for more information. Grand Prix hole 17

Caddies all winners… With over 280 golf courses across Thailand, caddies have become one of the kingdom’s secret weapons to a successful and enjoyable round of golf. Realising how important those smiling caddies have become, the Tourism Authority of Thailand decided back in 2010 to launch a golf tournament just for caddies. What started out three years ago as a fun Monday out on the course for a handful of caddies, has now developed into a major international event with top sponsors, plus major media coverage. The 2012 version of the TAT Singha Thai Caddie Championship attracted over 700 female caddies, who took part in eliminating rounds held at five top courses around Thailand. Eventual the top 120 players representing over 40 Thai golf clubs were invited to compete in the final held on the same course as the Honda LPGA Thailand, the Siam Country Club Plantation Course in Pattaya. There was a dramatic finish with a three way playoff, which eventually had to be held under floodlights. This year’s winner was Khun Sud Budsri representing the Eastern Star Golf Club from Rayong close to Pattaya and the runner up was a Korean caddie. The organisers laid on a lavish gala dinner with a Thailand You’ve Got Talent winning band to entertain all the guests. Highlight was traditional dances performed by Thai and Korean caddies. However everyone involved agreed without doubt that the whole event was an outstand success and all entrants were treated like winners.

Where to stay...

Hua Hin Golf Villas

Banyan

Hua Hin and Cha Am have over 179 hotels in the region, many located along the vast stretch of beach that runs from Cha Am in the north through Hua Hin and then onto Pranburi in the south. All are relatively close to one of the eleven golf courses in the region, and many can arrange transport to and from your favorite course. If you prefer to stay in the Centre of town a top choice would be the Hilton Hua Hin, overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. It offers prime beachfront accommodation with stunning views and access to a first-rate spa. It also features a beach-side pool and 5 dining options. Just a bit further along the coast but still very much in Hua Hin, is the Hyatt Regency Hua Hin. This luxurious 5-star beachfront property boasts a large lagoon pool set in 12.5 acres of tropical landscapes, stretching across 250 metres of white sands. Just 3 minutes’ walk from Cicada Market, the Hyatt is a 5-minute drive from Hua Hin Night Market and Railway Station. Close by is the brand new Amari Hua Hin that opened in October 2012. Boosting a massive pool, its own bakery and rooms facing the sea, the Amari is a welcomed addition to the Hua Hin region. Only 5 km from Hua Hin town centre, and less than 5 minutes’ drive to Khao Takaib Beach, Banyan Resort & Golf Hua Hin

Jomtien Beach Eat and Drink

Akvavit is very popular with Scandinavians who visit or stay in Pattaya. Swedish owned and managed, the restaurant features Northern European specialities and local Thai cuisine. Always busy during the high season, you have a choice of drinking and dining al fresco on the large terrace or in the air conditioned restaurant and bar. There are happy hour specials on food and drinks from 15.00 to 18.00 daily including 60 baht draft Carlsberg, 120 baht cocktail of the day and a range of food specials for 190 baht including their delicious Pytt Bellman. Saturday and Sunday lunchtime buffet is great value at 245 baht – the selection includes BBQ Ribs, Chicken Fajitas and, of course, Swedish Meatballs. Our favourites from the a la carte menu are Toast Skagen – a creamy mixture of shrimps in a dill mayonnaise sauce and the hearty Plank Steak that is served on, you guess it, a block of wood. The friendly staff speak good English and are attentive and knowledgeable.

building is a great place to chill out and watch sport on multiple TV screens. Aussie Rules, Rugby, Cricket, Grand Prix, Football and, of course, golf are all broadcast. The variety of draft beer is amongst the best in Pattaya and there is an extensive menu ranging from bar snacks to 3 course meals. On Sunday you can eat as much as you like from the carvery while watching the weekend’s sport. There are daily specials, entertainment features and a great atmosphere where visitors and expatriates are made warm and welcome. Phuket News An island of Golf By Graham Haslam

Tourists flock to the island of Phuket, many to enjoy the beaches, nightlife and to play some golf. However golf here can be expensive compared to other Thailand destinations. There are pretty much two levels to golf in Phuket – the top level which has the fabulous Red Mountain course and the historic Blue Canyon – Canyon Course (Priced in the 5500thb* and above range) and the next level that has the other five championship courses (about 4000thb*). The Top level include Red Mountain possibly the best golf course in Phuket, kept in immaculate condition, helped by the fact that, on average, less than 50 golfers play course each day. Their fairways are like carpet; the greens are FAST and also roll perfectly. Virtually new carts get you around the 10kms of rolling hills and dipping disused tin mines. Whilst it comes at a price, if you have the money, you have only one choice in Phuket. The Canyon Course has more famous stories than any other in Thailand. Playing a golf hole that Freddie Couples described as one of the best par3’s in the world will set the pulses racing – not to mention how it must feel to Ace it, Mr Connelly!! Whilst the course has its ups and downs, especially through the rainy (green) season, there is a certain tingling in the stomach knowing many of golfs greats have walked these exact same steps. The Second level has five courses and I will start with Mission Hills. A very flat course that for some reason has carts as compulsory, and it is the only course on Phuket that has a couple of holes that are adjacent to the sea. The Nicklaus design course is arguably the best-designed course on Phuket and whilst course maintenance over the past few years lets the course down it is definitely on the way back up again. Phuket Country Club, Phuket’s oldest course, is a short funky track where a good driver of the ball will play a few shots under their normal handicap. The signature 10th hole is a hole that circumnavigates a large lake, but a drive of 250 yards over the lake leaves a wedge to the green – on a Par FIVE. It is a fairly tight course and one does need to be accurate. For a change of pace there is always the new course that consists of nine holes that many say is the toughest golf challenge on Phuket.

Blue Canyon Lakes

Loch Palm’s forte is the fact it is always in great condition. A good honest test of golf that will have you thinking all the way around their 18 holes, and rewarding the good shots with good results. The sand here is a little finer than the others, meaning you get plugged lies more often than I would like, but this is an enjoyable golf course with Phuket’s newest club house. Laguna is a wonderful resort course. No long water carries and very flat greens with almost no break in any 6-7 foot putt should mean good scores - should. It is, however, long at 6700 yards par 71 and water in play on 16 holes. Just when you think you have a good score in the bag, the 612 yard par 5 17th rears up and bites you. Whilst there are no carts, the course is very flat – same story with PCC, above. Blue Canyon Lakes Course has it all. Great layout, plenty to test you (maybe too much on the 10th and 14th greens), a reachable par 4, a couple of par 5’s reachable in two , both with an approach over water if you are brave and a short par 3 with water on 3 sides. Once you think you have mastered the course, ask the caddy where the BLACK tees are and try them. Good Luck! With 7 courses, 21 sets of men’s tee boxes and a huge variety of choices and challenges means whatever you are looking for in golf, Phuket has the answer. *These are the published walk-in rates. You should check out their individual websites for weekday and sports day promotions.

See the Stars of the Future this November in Thailand…

Any tournament offering its winner an automatic entry to the US Masters has to be unique, and with Thailand hosting the 4th Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship this year, maybe a Thai could be wearing that coveted green jacket in 2013.

Payne and Dawson at press conference

The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), the Masters Tournament and The R&A created the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in 2009. The Championship is designed to help develop golf in Asia, and provide a focal point for the amateur game in an area of the world where the game’s growth has unlimited potential. Each year, the winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship earns an invitation to compete at the Masters, while the champion and runner(s)-up both earn spots in International Final Qualifying (IFQ) – Asia for The Open Championship in Great Britain, golf’s oldest Championship. This year’s field will comprise up to 120 players from 36 member nations of the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC). Each nation automatically receives two invitations, based on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) as of August 29. The rest of the field is then made up of invitations by ranking, with each country allowed up to a maximum of six players, while Thailand can have up to 10 as the host nation.

Hideki Matsuyama from Japan

The Japanese sensation Hideki Matsuyama has confirmed he will attempt to win a third successive Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, when the fourth edition of the event will be held from November 1st -4th at Amata Spring Country Club in Thailand. Matsuyama’s victories in Japan in 2010 and Singapore in 2011 – when the event was known as the Asian Amateur Championship – earned him invitations to the Masters Tournament, where he has shone against the world’s best. In 2011, he finished 27th in his debut at Augusta National Golf Club to win the Silver Cup as low amateur and he again made the cut in April, finishing 54th.

“I’ll definitely attempt to win the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship again as it would also be great to play again in the Masters next year,” said Matsuyama. “I’ve experienced playing at Augusta twice and I truly love the tournament, so my desire to go back grows stronger and stronger.”

www.thaigolf-news.com

The players will face a tough test at Amata Spring, which is located in Chonburi, just over an hour’s drive from central Bangkok. Lee Westwood won the Thailand Golf Championship last December at the acclaimed venue, which also hosted IFQ – Asia in March and was the former home of the Royal Trophy (Europe v Asia) and the inaugural LPGA Thailand in 2006.

Poom Saksansin from Thailand

Thongchai Jaidee has been named a Tournament Ambassador for this year’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. Thongchai, who won the Wales Open on the European Tour in June, is considered Thailand’s most famous and successful golfer, and he will be an inspiration to his young compatriots ahead of the fourth edition of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. “This is an exciting opportunity for Thailand to host the AsiaPacific Amateur Championship as it will give our best young golfers a chance to compete against other top amateurs in the region, as well as an opportunity to earn a spot in the Masters and IFQ-Asia,” said Thongchai, whose duties will include meeting the Thailand team and speaking on behalf of the championship and the host nation. “When I was a young amateur, we were not exposed to the exciting opportunities that this championship presents. Qualifying for the Masters and IFQ-Asia will certainly inspire fierce competition at Amata Spring.”

Thongchai Jaidee, Tournament Ambassador

Spectators will be welcome on all four days and entry to the Championship is completely free. You never know, you might even bump into Billy Payne, the Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club or Peter Dawson, the Chief Executive of The R&A, who will be taking in the wonders of Amata Spring.

Bars, pubs and restaurants... When a brand new restaurant is busy even on a very wet night in Bangkok, you begin to realize that the owners must have something special to offer. El Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse seems to have filled a need for Thais, Expats and Tourists alike who like their top quality cuisine served in a warm and hospitable atmosphere. Located right next to Terminal 21 and opposite the Westin hotel, this large restaurant can cater for up to 185 customers, with seats outside on the terrace and on the first floor. There is also a comfortable bar on the ground floor, where the beers start from Baht100 and Mojitos from Baht240. You can eat at the bar or move up to the 1st floor restaurant, designed using warm red bricks, wooden tables at various heights and lots of glowing candles. Most of the tables overlook the street below, and you can also book your own ten seat table hidden away in its own alcove. Great for that special celebration.

There is a large selection of wines from Spain, Chile, France and Argentina of course. However the star attraction has to be their food. They treat their prime meats like a good mature bottle of wine. This month the New York Filets are flavor of the month, but they also serve prime cuts from Australia and Argentina. If you are into your hamburgers, try the granddaddy of them all, a 100% Wagyu Burger. If fish is more to your liking they offer scampi, Pacific Dory or grilled Salmon. You know when you have enjoyed a great steak, and you want to take some home. Well a nice touch at El Gauchos is that they actually sell their meats downstairs from a small deli counter. Prime Cuts at Butchers prices! Good food, fine wines and a great atmosphere will keep El Gauchos busy for years to come. 8,8/1-7 Sukhumvit Soi 19 Sukhumvit Road Bangkok (next to Terminal 21 Asoke) tel: +66 (0) 22 552 864 reservation.suk@elgaucho.asia www.elgaucho.asia
