We do a lot of things so he can breathe easier. Day in and day out, without a break or a holiday, we do the things we do to ensure your wastewater treatment system works for you and for Alabama’s environment. Things like keeping 273 miles of pipe working properly in Shelby County alone. And maintaining our capacity to return up to 7 million gallons of pure water a day to county rivers (enough to fill 318 Olympic swimming pools each month). We even manage 4,800 manholes in the county needed to keep our systems running efficiently and safely.

If stacked end on end, they would reach the height of Mount Everest, plus 31 football fields. And all the while we aren’t just meeting or surpassing all state and federal health standards. We’re also helping to lower the likelihood of algal blooms, which rob wildlife of life-giving oxygen in the water. Our pledge to you: we’ll keep working for healthy rivers, and healthy communities. Which means we can all breathe a little easier.

Palooza in the Park promotes togetherness BY BRIANA HARRIS

T

he city of Pelham’s Palooza in the Park is returning to Pelham City Park on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents near and far are invited to enjoy this free event, powered by Pelham Palooza, that’s sure to be fun for the whole family. The event, now in its fifth year, will feature a wide variety of vendors outside at the Pelham Recreation Center, several food trucks and a children’s area, according to City Administrator Paula Holly. Food trucks set to attend the event include City Bowls 2, El Taco Truck, Fryer Truck, Golden Rule BBQ, Hammer’s Hot Dogs and Who Dat Snoballs.

The children’s area, Kidzapalooza, is sure to impress with multiple inflatables, balloon artists, face painting, carnival games, arts and crafts, bull riding, a bungee trampoline and hula hoopers and more. This year, Palooza in the Park will feature its first Juried Fine Art and Craft Show. Juried Fine Art and Craft Show winners will be announced on stage at 11 a.m. Shortly after that at 11:15 a.m., there will be a Zumba and Refit demonstration by instructors from the recreation center. Live music kicks off at noon with song selections from an ’80s cover band, the M-80s. Over in the Kidzapalooza area, Funny Faces Balloon Artist will entertain children from 1-4 p.m.

There will also be an invitation only car display featuring PushRodz Alabama Car Club. With the city park being home to the recently constructed Pelham Park Middle School, Pelham Recreation Center and Pelham Public Library, Holly said hosting the event there also gives area residents a chance to check out the new facilities if they haven’t already. “Many of our city venues focus on sports, enjoying the outdoors and promoting community togetherness,” Holly said. “We’re a city that celebrates those things, and having the event at the park ties everything together.” For more information about Palooza in the Park, go to Pelhampalooza.live.

Stay and play in Pelham BY EMILY SPARACINO

A

re you looking for somewhere to take your family for a day of hiking, fishing or fun on the water? Do you want to catch a hockey game or take the kids ice skating? Or are you interested in listening to live music in an outdoor setting? No matter what you’re looking for, Pelham is the right place to be. Pelham is home to Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama’s largest state park. This 9,940-acre spread of forests, lakes and more than 50 acres of trails is the perfect retreat for anyone wanting to hike or mountain bike. The Red Trail has earned the distinction of being included on the International Mountain Biking Association’s list of EPIC rides. Additionally, the park includes a pump track and BMX course. If you’re more into water activities, check out cable skiing at Flipside Watersports, rent a boat for the afternoon or head over to the beach and swimming area for a dip in the water or just a relaxing spot to sit and read a book. You can also try out horseback riding or pack a lunch and have a picnic with your family. Before you leave the park, visit the Alabama Wildlife Center to learn about the rehabilitation services that give injured native birds a chance to heal and return to the wild. You can even view the resident birds from the Tree Top Nature Trail. For some competitive fun on the courts, go to the Pelham Racquet Club. This public facility is available to everyone through a daily fee and memberships. Twenty clay courts and five hard courts with tournament grade lighting make up the facility, which hosts tournaments, lessons, league play and social events.

Another venue abuzz with activity since it opened last year is the new Pelham Recreation Center. The spacious facility features three regulation-size basketball courts, two volleyball courts, offices, meeting areas, exercise rooms and an indoor walking track. Golf enthusiasts will want to play a round with friends at the picturesque Ballantrae Golf Club, an 18-hole course designed by internationally renowned golf course architect Bob Cupp. For those days you want to do something without planning around the weather, bowling at Oak Mountain Lanes is a great option. Specials like Ladies’ Night on Thursday nights and summer bowling leagues will get you on your feet and on the lanes. Another, slightly colder, option is ice skating at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. Are you in the mood for something in the arts and culture scene? South City Theatre has your ticket. This non-profit theatre delivers a heartfelt, entertaining performance every time. Or you can see big-name bands play at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, an open-air venue that draws a diverse line-up of artists every year. This year’s concert series includes Brad Paisley; Heart with Brandi Carlile and Elle King; and Hootie and the Blowfish, to name a few. No matter what your summer plans are, Pelham has something for everyone!

The M-80s set to take the stage at Palooza in the Park

BY BRIANA HARRIS

T

he explosive ’80s cover band, the M-80s, has been announced as the headliner for the fifth installment of Pelham Palooza, which is set to take place at Pelham City Park on Saturday, May 18. The live performance is set to kick off at noon on the main stage. The five-piece band will perform musical

selections until 3 p.m. The band is fronted by lead vocalist Jenni Mote with Michael Weidenbach on bass, Larry Gambrill on the drums, Mike Tucker as the lead guitarist and Glenn Freeman on the keyboard. Formed in 2008, the band strives to give viewers an authentic performance of the most popular tunes from the 1980s, complete with full instrumentation, tight harmonies and a fun show. The band has traveled all over

the Southeast to places like Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia entertaining crowds. In 2010, the band was the runner-up in Birmingham Magazine’s Readers’ Poll for “Best Local Cover Band.” The band started out with a couple of friends playing along to their iPod in the living room and it grew from there, said Tucker. “We all have day jobs, but we take it

very seriously,” Tucker said. “We strive to entertain people the best we can.” The band has played gigs at festivals, private events, weddings, country clubs and even a high school prom. “We’re going wherever it takes us,” Tucker said. Artists like Michael Jackson, Journey, The Go-Go’s, Bon Jovi, Prince and Cheap Trick not only serve as their inspiration, but also make up the soundtrack for the ’80s, and set the standards for generations to come. The M-80s promise to take listeners back in time to the best music from the 1980s. Every song is an instantly recognizable hit and audiences will likely know the words to every song they sing.

Juried Art and Craft Show spotlights local artists BY NATHAN HOWELL

O

ne of the most relatable parts of the human experience is expression through art. The Pelham Palooza will give visitors and local artists an opportunity to come together and share that experience during the Juried Art and Fine Craft Show. “It is a very unique opportunity for the city of Pelham to give back to its citizens,” said Janice Eubank, local artist and Palooza regular.

In the past the art show portion of the festival blended in with the rest of the festival, but this year festival coordinators “wanted it to have its own presence,” according to Eubank. They wanted to separate arts and crafts from fine art and fine craft. The show will highlight the local artists and will be separate from other vendors. Guests will be able to browse through the works entered in the competition and purchase other pieces from the artists there. Artists are invited to bring their best works and have them judged by the committee based on the specific category with a monetary prize being awarded to the winners. Categories available for judging during the event include photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, mixed media, woodwork, glass, metalworking, fiber, clay and fine jewelry. According to Eubank, show coordinators have invited an unspecified art gallery owner to judge the entries. The judge will have significant experience in the field of fine art and craft and will award monetary prizes for “best in show” and “first place” in specific categories. The works are the product of years of training and hard work at perfecting a craft from local artists, so while you’re out enjoying the day’s activities make sure to stop by and take in the beauty of individual expression.

PushRodz Car Display

BY NATHAN HOWELL

C

lassic car enthusiasts will have an opportunity to take in a variety of classic vehicles during the Palooza at the PushRodz Car Club display. This car display will provide attendees a unique opportunity to check out a wide variety of well-preserved cars specifically from the 1970s. The PushRodz club is based in Hayden and describes themselves as “open-minded” when it comes to classic cars. Their members sport a wide array of classic cars often featuring “hot rods, muscle cars, rat rods, custom vans and VW’s,” according to their Facebook page. The club travels around the state gathering at local events sharing their love for classic cars and using their visibility to support local charities, vocational trade schools, local artists and restaurants. The group has participated in several charitable events including “cruiseins” that benefitted groups like the Children’s Hospital of Alabama, and toy drives to benefit children during Christmas time.

Entries for the car show are exclusive to club members and were entered on an invite-only basis, so that the best of the best are on display. The display is sure to be a popular attraction at this year’s event and will serve as an opportunity for the club to raise awareness about their charitable

efforts and to provide an outlet for local classic car lovers to network. Make sure to stop by and connect with PushRodz members to learn more. Further information about the group, their cars and their charitable efforts is available on the PushRodz Car Club Facebook page.
