A report on the club’s record medals haul at Nationals

Hello, Of course, am always thinking about the great clubs and individuals that participate in our local sports within the Sevenoaks District and recently I saw a quote on social media that resonated with me That quote was “It is not easy, but it is worth it!” This is something that all members of our clubs, including the volunteers, should remember, as they are putting in the groundwork for future generations of our local sports participants We should always remember that what we are building is also for the next generation and that what we do matters to them, both physically and mentally In this month’s issue we bring you a comprehensive report on Sevenoaks Swimming Club’s journey at the British Nationals, we talk to Sevenoaks Rugby Club’s Head Coach Adam Bowman about the new season in the RFU’s National League 2, and we introduce our new travel articles from Frank Baldwin starting with natural swimming in Austria. We also have our regular contributors from the Better Body Group and the Persea Clinic, giving you their fitness and nutritional advice for free Next month we will be bringing you an exclusive interview from our very own Team GB athlete Tom Bosworth on his retirement from Race Walking and we’ll look forward to the start of the hockey season too! Until then, we’ll perhaps see you at your local sports club, supporting all those that matter.

“Coming on the back of the Lionesses recent success, the timing couldn’t have been better With a core of 80+ girl footballers aged 5 15 already at the club, setting up a Ladies team is just the icing on the cake! We now have a pathway from junior and youth girls’ football all the way through to open age football, a major milestone in further progressing girls and women’s football at Chipstead “We’re delighted to have Dave, Sean and the ladies on board and look forward to helping them achieve their goals in the years ahead.”

“But overall these Chipstead ladies can go far with their hard work, determination and commitment ” Chipstead’s Club Chairman, Alan Black, told Sevenoaks Sport & Wellbeing: “Establishing a ladies team at Chipstead wasn’t in our plans for at least a couple of years However, when recently approached by Gabby about setting up a Ladies team this year, we felt it worthwhile at least exploring the feasibility of doing so “On meeting up soon after with Gabby, Gemma, Jules and Dave & Sean, we were immediately impressed by their sheer enthusiasm and determination to make it happen Despite the season being just over four weeks away we all agreed to give it our best shot And here we are 10 days later with a Ladies team affiliated and accepted into the South East Counties Woman’s Football League, sponsorship sorted, new kit on order and a first match under their belt, ending in an encouraging 3 2 win A terrific team effort has enabled all this to be achieved in such a short space of time The focus is now on recruiting a few more players and getting more friendlies in before the start of the season.

At the end of July, Chipstead Football Club unveiled exciting new plans to add an adult women’s side to their club, for the first time in the successful community club’s history.

“The outlook for them looks extremely promising Chipstead have worked so hard to welcome the team to the club, affiliating them into the league and providing training facilities. With Chipstead needing a senior ladies team, they now have the perfect squad to spearhead women’s football, plus a stepping stone for youth to adult football

New manager Dave Bristow had previously seen a number of the now Chipstead ladies play in a league game and thought they had real potential. He said: “I am so glad they have chosen myself and Sean to take them forward.

“I had previously spoken with Alan Black and Jason from the Chipstead committee and knew they were keen to have an official ladies team, so I got back in touch with them and before we knew it Dave, Sean, myself and two other

04 SE V ENOAKS SPOR T & W ELLBEING CHIP S T E AD F C ANNOUNCE NE W W OMEN’S T E AM players had a meeting with the whole Chipstead Committee two days later, and we were all in agreement to have the team set up immediately!

“It has been a challenging but very exciting process and I speak on behalf of all of the new Chipstead ladies that we cannot wait to see what this upcoming season will bring and thank Dave, Sean and Chipstead for all of their efforts and support, they have all truly been amazing! This is a tremendously inspiring time for Chipstead as we can now provide a team for their younger generation of girls to hopefully look up to, which brings me to also add it has certainly started off on the right foot having just played our first game as Chipstead ladies and winning 3 2!”

Chipstead who have two senior men’s team, a vet’s team and multiple youth sides, have been progressively building up their girls football offering for a number of years, and owing to a new local need for well run women’s teams, Chipstead ladies was formed. The ladies will ply their trade in the Kent Division 2 West of the South East Counties Women’s Football League starting this season 2022/23 and will come up against local and also newly formed side New Ash Green Women’s Gabby Smith, Chipstead ladies team secretary told Sevenoaks Sport & Wellbeing: “Myself and a few other ladies were in talks with coach Dave Bristow about setting up a new ladies team for a club that did not currently have one. We wanted Dave and his son Sean Bristow to manage/coach us and we had around 10 players raring and ready to go.

“For myself, my plan is to build a good foundation for women’s football at Chipstead, then in a few years pass the reins over to my son Sean who has experience helping coach the Brighton women’s team during his time at college

“The club Chairman has promised that we can keep any winnings from the first two rounds, so if that happens then the squad won’t have to pay a penny all season for training and subscriptions ”

Adam Bowman: I am the type of person who struggles to enjoy the moment but the squads, the staff and everyone involved did such a superb job With the first and second teams winning their respective leagues and the second team winning the cup, it was a pretty special year all round We should be especially proud of what we've all achieved but you have to quickly turn your attention to the new season and the challenges ahead. There have been a lot of positive changes at the club over the summer as we prepare for our new life in the National 2 league, which we are all very excited for The changes I mentioned over the summer were voted on by club members, including the option of paying players, which a large majority were in favour of as long as it is sustainable and that the revenue to be used was new and additional revenue coming into the club As a result, we are now in a position to provide a benefits package to our players. If we want to be a sustainable and competitive level 4 National 2 rugby club then you’ve got to have the right model, and I believe that this is the right model to enable future growth and success at the club

HC Knole Park’s U14 and U16 Girls won the Y1 National Finals at Surbiton HC this weekend!

SE V ENOAKS SPOR T & W ELLBEING 19 HC K NOLE PARK U14 & U16 GIRL S W IN T HE Y1 N AT ION AL FIN AL S!

The opening goal came against the run of play as the HMP had dominated the early exchanges Pascale Pottier keeping the score at 0 0 On the break Knole Park put together a wonderful sweeping move involving the midfield duo of Alessia Turner and Josefina Hippe, before Amy Wakeham Dawson hit the ball to Summer Knight Thompson on the far post to tap in 1 0 The HMP replied immediately for 1 1, however the goal for Knole Park was exactly what the girls needed and moments later they retook the lead A superb run through the right from Charlotte Watkins resulted in the ball hitting a foot on the line and penalty stroke was awarded Lottie Bingham slotted the ball high into the netting for 2 1. The second period was outstanding First Watkins scored an excellent 1v1 for 3 1, before Bingham sliced through the HMP defence to make it 4 1

The girls’ technical skills and carrying ability, combined with their outstanding defence and clinical finishing that was the difference Hippe scored two excellent individual goals, Knight Thompson scored her third of the match and Watkins her second The HMP scored twice on the break in the half to make the final score 10 3 to Knole Park and to seal the title!

The U14 Girls beat Surbiton HC 5 1 and the U16 Girls beat the Hockey Mentors Project 10 3 with hat tricks for Summer Knight Thompson and Lottie Bingham In the U14 Girls final the girls were outstanding from start to finish They dominated the ball and had the best chances of the match, but initially struggled to get passed the Surbiton goalkeeper. It wasn’t until the second quarter when super sub Bea Foster came on and with her first touch roofed a flick into the Surbiton goal to give Knole Park the lead 1 0 The score was levelled in the third quarter as Surbiton capitalised on a loss of concentration in defence, squeezing the ball past the Knole Park goalkeeper The final period was as good as the rest of the match, but with the goals! A 4 0 period gave Knole Park the win and the title!

The third and fourth quarters continued with Knole Park playing some scintillating hockey

The U16 Girls match was a goal fest! The girls had come through as runners up to the Hockey Mentor’s Project (HMP) in the Regional Finals, but in the Final, they stepped up and played some outstanding hockey to win 10 3!

Knight Thompson scored her second of the match going past the on rushing goalkeeper for 5 1 and then Watkins and Bingham combined again to make it 6 1 with Bingham claiming her third of the match.

First Evie Whitehead flicked a ball high into the net from a rebound after a good run from Evie Smith Smith then smashed home an outstanding backhand strike into the top corner Boadicea Cannon then scored Knole Park’s fourth of the match with a coolly taken 1v1, before Biba Mills scored the goal of the game with a 3D carry over 15 metres before lobbing the goalkeeper! An amazing 5 1 win and Knole Park were crowned champions!

AB: We want to win as many games as possible, we don’t like losing, none of us like losing. We go onto the pitch as a group to win and that’s no different this year I want to win as many games as possible, that’s what we’re looking to do, but our objective as a group is to establish ourselves. And finally, do you have a few words about your supporters?

Photo : Sevenoaks Rugby Club

Sevenoaks Rugby Club have had mixed results in pre season, including a trip to Dar tford (below) where they ran out convincing 38 5 winners

members. You will see new things in the bar, a new outside bar, we’re just looking to professionalise the offering for our members and supporters Are you satisfied with what you have seen from the group so far?

AB: In terms of the squad itself, Patrick [Pellegrini] has left the club and joined fulltime at Coventry in the Championship. We have a few new faces coming in which will be revealed in due course, but the large majority of the group is the same. They’re an intelligent group and they learn quickly, they’re very talented rugby players and we’re confident that with the coaching structure , the attitude of the group of players, that we can surprise a few people this year. There will be some tough days in the office and we’ll have to learn pretty quickly but we’re up for that challenge

What position would you be happy with come April?

Do you have a target for yourself or the club before the season starts?

AB: I think our objective this season, with the league restructure, our 2nd XI coming into the RFU pyramid, and our 3rd XI in the Kent Invicta, the objective as a squad, and it is a squad, these players will move up and down between teams, is to be competing near the top of the league for our 2nd team, and for the first team is about establishing ourselves at that level Where do you see your toughest competition coming from this season?

AB: We’re really looking forward to our first home game at the Paddock, we have over 100 people booked in for lunch on that day. The success we’ve had over the years, we couldn’t have done without our supporters. They’ve been with us on this journey, giving huge amounts of support to the whole squad whether we’ve had good runs or not so good runs, so we are hugely appreciative of their support and we look forward to seeing them on the side lines again this year

AB: Obviously Blackheath have just come down from National 1 and I would expect them to go straight back up, but there are a lot of very good teams in this league On our doorstep you’ve got Tonbridge Juddians, Canterbury and Rochford Hundred. If you are a couple of percent off your game against anyone in this league you’re going to struggle. So we need to focus ourselves, make sure everyone knows their roles and responsibilities and do their job to the best of their abilities

Talking of Tonbridge Juddians, Adam added: A few years ago it seemed a long way off that we would be playing each other, but they’ve also come down from National 1. We’ve always had some great games against Tonbridge at academy and junior level, and it’s great to be playing them now at senior level

We have had a few conversations with young athletes involved in high performance sport who have told us that they are only playing, 'not to let mum and dad down, as their parents have given and committed so much ' I know as parents if our children told us this, many of us would be mortified and upset that we had allowed things to get to this stage. The importance of making sure our children understand that the conversation when they tell us, 'I no longer want to do this anymore,' is always on the table. That does not mean we react instantly and allow them just to stop We need to spend time finding out why as it may be

However, there is very limited research when it comes to the specifics of sport parenting in this way Author Tim Elmore in 12 Huge Mistakes

The reality is that children are very different people to their parents Their interests, dreams and journeys will make them different people However, we all know that our children will carry some of our thoughts, beliefs or personality traits with them Whilst we often think our children are not listening to us, you can guarantee that they will never fail to imitate us. The pressure if not managed correctly can be huge on our children when it is us that is driving the sporting journey and the motivation is not coming from them

There can also be this feeling of pressure to give their children certain advantages (again totally understandable) but when combined with a parent who has their own regrets about their own sporting journeys it is easy to see why some parents can project their own dreams on to their children

There are pros and cons as there are with most things around this as having parents who have been involved in the sport can be extremely beneficial as well. Every parent wants their children to have enjoyable and fulfilling lives For many, this means encouraging children not to make the same mistakes they did

Parents Can Avoid explains: 'Our children are ultimately a reflection on us. They represent our second chance to get it right Through them we may get to do our childhood over again….For hundreds of thousands of parents, this issue remains the number one problem in raising healthy kids ' It is natural for us to do things that we have enjoyed and take our children to sports that we have had some experience of. This will always happen, but we also need to ensure that they have a choice and be open to the idea of them finding their own passions and interests, perhaps in sports that we have no understanding of You may well have heard this phrase at your child's sporting organisation or school, not generally from other parents but more likely from coaches who are perhaps struggling with the perceived approach of sports parents So, does the phrase apply to you and does this phenomenon actually exist? We thought we would dig a little deeper and see what research we could find A 2013 study was one of the first to provide experimental evidence that parents do indeed attempt to redeem broken dreams through their children. The researchers found that parents can feel pride in their children’s achievements and even heal old wounds. When taken to extremes, however, living vicariously through a child can damage both the child and the parent

I know many parents in performance programmes who admit they know very little about the sport their children are involved in and whilst they are learning on the go, in many ways they feel less pressure for their child to succeed and have to hand over ownership of the sporting experience to their children and coaches

26 SE V ENOAKS SPOR T & W ELLBEING ARE YOU LI V ING YOUR LIFE V ICARIOUSLY THROUGH YOUR SPOR TING CHILDREN?

It’s important to look beyond your motives and consider the role your emotions and experiences might play in your sports parenting decisions.

• Involve yourself and learn more about their interests and motivations

• Your child should not be defined by their sporting prowess nor should your unconditional love waver for them based on their sporting performances and achievements

• They find it difficult to form their own identity and find the passions and interests that will allow them to flourish and thrive as human beings.

This can be really difficult particularly if we have no interest ourselves Ask them questions about it, try and gain a greater understanding of what makes them excited about it. You never know, you may start something new yourself and roll with it. We hope we have created an article that allows plenty of self reflection and offers some thoughts and suggestions that you may find useful This is a great opportunity just to check and challenge yourself in ensuring that for the most part your children are not living through our own sporting careers for a second time.

Researchers from Utrecht University in the Netherlands examined what happens to parents who push their kids to live out the dreams they were never able to achieve

SE V ENOAKS SPOR T & W ELLBEING 27 that they have reached this decision and investigate if this is something that has just been caused by a specific incident or series of things that may have gone wrong. We must also try to stress the importance of seeing through a particular block of training or a season so children understand the importance of commitment being aware that children can often be fickle, change their mind frequently and creating some breathing space allows everyone to think through their choices and next stages Giving our children some form of autonomy is critical simply put giving them 'choice and a voice ' Providing unconditional love and support is a hallmark of great sports parenting and indeed parenting. As our children get older, they begin to establish their own identity and pursue their own dreams, if this is quashed by parents it can often hinder a child's growth and their ability to make healthy decisions without parental input

• Our children may never feel satisfied or feel that they are achieving. They can often be overburdened by the perceived levels of pressure and expectation

However, supporting our children in this way has far more negative than positive connotations

Here are a few ways that you can stay on the right side of the line:

• They may be at a higher risk of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders

Most parents do not intend to harm their children and truly believe they are doing what is in a child’s best interests

• Communicate that your love for your child has nothing to do with their performance and help them find their passions

• Let them be their own people you can still have high expectations of their character traits and behaviours, but your expectations are on things that align with theirs, that our children are in control of and in sport specifically those performance and process goals that hopefully may lead to positive outcomes for them Just remember they are their own people

• Ensure the conversation around not pursuing a certain endeavour is always on the table and your children know this

• As we mentioned earlier there can be no worse situation than a child playing sport at whatever level with their only motivation being, 'I don't want to let mum or dad down '

They found that parents who experience unresolved disappointment from the past, feel pride and fulfilment when they can bask in their children's glory. Watching their child succeed actually helps heal their emotional wounds

So, what are some of the negatives of sports parenting in this way:

I know when I say, 'When I played ' my children will say 'boring.....life story.' It acts as a really good prompt for me If I believe the story has significant meaning for them, I will persevere in sharing how I felt about certain situations that they may be going through but if not, I will accept what they are saying! Reliving your old glory days through your children is just one way to heal your emotional wounds There are many other ways you can deal with your past regrets or disappointments without potentially having a negative impact on your them.

We all have good intentions. We might think we are giving our children a boost or giving our children opportunities we never had However, we may be doing more harm than good There are times when sharing our experiences can be really powerful and helpful to our children, but it is a fine line between being helpful and trying to heal ourselves.

oliday is that time when we tend to let go of our usual routine and sometimes forget about the principles of balanced nutrition.

A blood sugar roller coaster can cause fatigue, mood swings, food cravings, irritabilit y, jit ter y feeling, weakness, headache, and increased thirst.

Balancing work and the school holiday childcare often results in parents offering their children a quick meal which may contain processed foods or those that are higher in sugar This is OK on occasions but in a long run can affect our children's immunity, weight, and mental wellbeing

A blood sugar roller coaster can cause fatigue, mood swings, food cravings, irritability, jittery feeling, weakness, headache, and increased thirst Including plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, fibre, good quality protein and whole grains in your child's diet provides more sustainable energy and can help to keep their blood sugar steady.

Consuming cereal chocolate puffs or a high carbohydrate breakfast don’ t provide sufficient nutrients and is likely to be high in refined sugars. Refined sugars enter the blood stream quickly and can lead to rapid changes in blood sugar levels causing a sugar rollercoaster (spikes and dips!)1

DHA has been shown to improve learning, verbal learning ability, mood, memory and concentration

Children aged 1 to 4 years old should be given a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year. Children from the age of 1 year and adults need 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day2

Great food sources of vitD are oily fish such as: salmon or mackerel, egg yolks, smaller amounts are also found in beef liver and fortified foods such as milk and dairy products

VitD As we approach cooler months, days shorten, and the Sun is in at its lowest angle Cold weather during the Autumn and Winter plays an important role in reducing our body ’s immunity. Our immune response can become weakened making us more susceptible to colds and infections

Some studies show that Omega 3 may also have a positive affect on children with ADHD and other mood disorders

It also plays an important role in the immune function. Some of the amino acids that create neurotransmitters can be made in the body, but others must be derived from protein in our diet Neurotransmitters imbalances can affect a child’s behaviour and mood, for example low levels of neurotransmitter serotonin can be associated with impulsive behaviour Thus, ensuring that your child has sufficient protein intake during the day is very important.

Eggs are the most versatile source of protein and are easy to incorporate at mealtime You can include them in your child’s breakfast and even disguise (for example in oat pancakes or porridge) them if your child is not keen on eggs!

Probiotics studies suggest that beneficial bacteria found in some probiotic foods such as fermented dairy products (kefir) and fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha can have many health benefits which includes improved digestion and stronger immunity.

Between October and March, we don’ t make enough vitD from the sunlight, therefore Autumn is a good time to start supplementing vitD in your child’s diet
