BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FOREWORD

2022 was certainly a memorable year for the mighty Saints! A long term vision was realised with the opening of the $25 million Western Foyer and Saints Event Centre Development, we celebrated forty wonderful years of our licensed premises, the Under 13/1’s toured Cairns, and we ended the season with our second NSW Rugby League Sydney Shield Premiership.

The Western Foyer and Event Centre is the second major development that the Club has completed in the last five years. These developments not only provide much needed facilities for our players, their families, and the community, they also enhance our ability to attract major rugby league teams and tournaments to the area. It is rugby league that is the core of our existence, and as a Club we remain committed to propagating the game.

The Club’s pathway programs provide male and female players from within the community every opportunity to reach their full potential and the highest level of rugby league. The success of our pathway programs was evident in 2022 with many of our junior and senior players recognised for their outstanding form, achieving representative selection in Harold Matthews (Riley Allen, Alex Fonoti, Apiianga Manu, Henry Neemia, Riley Barglik, Cody Kay, Marcus Muscat, Hayden Stevens), SG Ball (Moustafa Dirani, Harrison Hassett, Liam Ison, Billy Scott, Aston Warwick, Jimmy Donnelly, Ethan Hutchings, Elijah Mataale, Lafaele Tauapai), Tarsha Gale Cup (Yasmine Baker, Illisia Haumono, Chelsea Makira, Sylvana Siitia, Lyshante Taramai, Siulolovao Vave, Montana Clifford, Amber Johnstone, Christina Neria, Brooke Talataina, Natalie Vaka, Shemariah Tagaloamatua), NSW Rugby League City Origin (Anthony Layoun, Antonio Pelesasa, Chantel Tugaga, Eddie Aiono, Joe Vaegaau, Pat Hollis, Ray Lesoa), NSW Country Origin (Abbi Church, Rikeya Horne, Salma Nour), NSW Blues Origin (Sara Togatuki), NRL (Abbi Church, Billy Tsikrikas, Chantel Tugaga, Elsie Albert, Kurt Falls, Rikeya Horne, Salma Nour, Sara Togatuki, Soni Luke, Sunia Turuva), and International selection (Litia Fusi, Tia-Jordyn Vasilovski, Harrison Hasset, Geoff Daniela, Kim Nikua), and four former Saints (Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Moses Leota, Izack Tago) were part of the Panthers second consecutive NRL Premiership win.

As a Club, we successfully fielded an amazing fifty-four teams in the Penrith and Districts Junior Rugby League and NSW Rugby League Conference Competitions. Thirty-four sides progressed through to the finals’ series, we secured eight premierships, and pleasingly for the first time in two years we were able hold presentations and acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of players and officials alike. Of course, none of that would be possible without a devote group of volunteers whose unwavering commitment to our Club, the great game, and to our players is both appreciated and admired. When congratulating and thanking those associated with our rugby league operations, special mention must go to Rugby League Manager (Adam Przybyla), Rugby League Administrator (Dannielle Black), Junior League President (Peter Bowler) and Secretary (Janelle Borg). Whilst we enjoyed celebrating our on-field success, being a “Saint” is about more than just winning and being the best that you can on the field. It’s about being part of a Club, a community and representing yourself and the Club well both on and off the field. Thank you to all committee members, players and officials who represented Saints so well throughout the year. Lastly, I am very proud to be a member of the St Marys Rugby League Club Board of Directors. A Board who are committed to meeting the objects of the Constitution, propagating the game of rugby league and putting the best interests of the Club, its Members and the community first. On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to thank our rugby league players, parents and officials for entrusting the Board to represent them. It is a responsibility that we take on with enormous honour and pride.

JUNIOR LEAGUE PRESIDENTS & SECRETARIES REPORT

Finally, we had the opportunity to complete a season. It was great to see all of our players and supporters back enjoying their footy on weekends after the Covid disruptions of the last two seasons. On behalf of Janelle Borg our Club Secretary and myself I would like to thank and acknowledge the efforts of Rod Desborough and the Board of management for their continued support of Rugby League in our district. Also Adam Pryzbyla and Danielle Black for everything they do for the betterment of our great club and lastly we welcomed Anthony Moore as our new Coaching Coordinator, who will help make us even better.

Congratulations and thankyou to all of our coaches, trainers, managers and sponsors for your efforts and involvement each week. A big congratulations to our Sydney Shield side coached by Glenn Jones on winning the Premiership and the Tony Dicker award for Team of the year. Also our 12/1 girls team for winning the Warren Smith trophy for our Saturday team of the year.

Our club again did really well at the Penrith District Junior Rugby League awards night, receiving the Women’s club champions award and also taking out the 1st division club champions award. Once again that’s a great reflection on all our people involved.

Our female program expanded this season and most of our sides played in NSWRL conference competitions and exceeded my expectations.

The 3 Senior sides playing in the NSWRL comps all enjoyed their season with the Sydney Shield side using many junior players throughout the season and being crowned Premiers being a great result. Our Club Captain, Geoff Daniela was awarded the prestigious Life members trophy and was a very deserving winner. Our Junior teams capable of playing finals footy from under 9’s to Open womens totalled 32 sides, all of whom qualified with 7 sides taking out the Premiership, congratulations to all involved and lets do it again bigger and better in 2023.

In closing, I still say we are the best Junior league club in the world and it is an honour to lead St Marys again.

Hope to see all our players, staff and officials return in 2023.

RUGBY LEAGUE ADMINISTRATORS REPORT

Year after year our club participation continues to grow. In 2022 we had over 1,000 players and 54 teams representing Saints in the Penrith and Districts Junior Rugby League and NSW Rugby League Conference Competitions. The Club also experienced significant growth in female participation with over 250 female players from Under 5’s to Major Competitions.

After two Covid-19 affected seasons, we were all excited and hopeful for 2022. Just as teams were starting back for pre-season training, we were struck by unimaginable rain causing devastation to training grounds and facilities, disrupting our pre-season preparations. After the first two rounds were cancelled, much to the excitement of players and officials alike the Penrith and Districts Junior Rugby League Competition officially commenced on 23 April 2022. Unfortunately, the rain continued throughout the season causing five washout rounds. However, our resilient Saints finished the year with pride and represented the club in a manner that we can all be proud of.

To Club President, Waren Smith OAM, the Board of Directors, CEO Rod Desborough and the Club’s Management team, thank you for your continuous support throughout the season. Special thanks to Rugby League Manager, Adam Przybyla and Junior League Executives Peter Bowler and Janelle Borg for their tireless work and support, and to our very dedicated game day officials, without whom none of this would be possible.

Lastly, to all players, coaches, managers and trainers, thank you for your efforts both on and off the field and for making 2022 another successful season at Saints.

MINI SIDES

Although the Under 5’s to Under 8’s are not classified as competitive, it doesn’t stop our little Saints giving it their all week in and week out, wearing the green and white colours with pride! truly do hope to see you all back in 2023.

On behalf of our players, parents, and coaching staff I would like to thank St Marys Rugby League Club for their ongoing support in providing a great environment for young and upcoming footballers to learn, play and enjoy the game of Rugby League. I am so proud of the team and how much they grew over the season. Many came into the season never playing Rugby League before and the skills confidence they have developed is amazing. I look forward to seeing you all back next year!

A big thank you to all the families for their continued support and dedication to the team this season. Attendance at training and games, even in the colder months, was tremendous. Without the extra assistance from our team manager Hayley McGregor and team trainer Danny Brown, I wouldn’t have been given the opportunity to witness the growth and development of all our amazing players this season. I am so proud of you all.

Thank you to our 2022 season sponsors Kay Kelly Promotions, Brydens Lawyers, Holiday Inn Sydney St Marys, Go Bananas. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to all the players for being such an enjoyable playing group to coach this past season. The willingness to participate and learn at training, to then take that onto the field has made my job as a coach so rewarding. Being able to witness the week-toweek development, and improvements in their skills and abilities as footballers was incredible.

I would like to thank our amazing Team Manager Belinda Kidwell and our Team Trainer’s Nathan Scicluna and Kurt Hearn for volunteering so much of their own time this season to ensure our players were able to have a fulfilled season. I’m sure you helped make the season so much more enjoyable for the kids.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors for the year, Fresh Plumbing, Brydens Lawyers, Holiday Inn Sydney St Marys, Go Bananas. It has been an honour to represent to many great local businesses.

I would like to start by extending a thank you to our team sponsors over the season, Platinum Roofing Specialists, Brydens Lawyers, Holiday Inn Sydney St Marys, Go Bananas. Your constant support allows Saint Mary’s the opportunity to provide such a wonderful club for our children to play football for.

Without the support of our Team Managers Kenneth Scott and Amanda Scott alongside our Team Trainers Mark Keon and Sarah Keon this season would not have run as smoothly as it did. Your hard work is appreciated by everyone involved within the team, especially myself. The last puzzle piece to our smooth season is all the parents involved within team. Constantly sacrificing your weeknights and weekends so your child can play football is respected.

Lastly, I would like to make known how proud I am off all our players this season. To be able to watch you all grow into your personalities while developing your football skills has been an honour. I hope the determination and dedication you have shown this season stays for future seasons.

What a fantastic season we’ve all had together this past year. This team has worked wonderfully together and none of that would have been made possible without the help from our Team Manager Lauren Cecil. I value all of the time and effort you put into helping this season.

A major thank you to all the players for consistently putting in hard work every week no matter if it was during a game or just at training. Being able to witness all the new skills being learned makes me proud to be your coach. This thank you is also extended to our team parents for your dedication to allowing the team to succeed every week.

What an amazing 2022 season we were all able to share together, to only say I am proud would be an understatement for all your hard work and determination this year. In our first year of competitive football, we finished of the season as Minor Premiers after only taking one loss. To secure a spot in the grand final after facing Quakers Hill in a 24-10 semi-final showdown just proves how much you all show up and play for each other. While we were unfortunate to not take home the premiership after a 12-6 loss to Colyton Colts, I just want you all to know that the family we have created within this team is something I am so honoured to have been a part of.

A huge thank my coaching staff for volunteering their time in supporting both the team and I. My amazing team manager Brittany Weir & our team trainers Webber Pale Eli, Blake Savage and Jaiden Savage.

Another year Coaching these boys, and am so proud of their development. Despite the ups and downs, wins and losses we faced this season the team continued to show diversity and determination throughout and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. We finished the regular season in 3rd position and faced Mt Druitt in the week 1 of Finals, walking away with a convincing 50-0 win. In the Grand Final Qualifier, we came up against a strong Minchinbury Jets side who proved to be too strong for our Saints and took the win.

I look forward to the 2023 season and I am confident that it will be our year.

The 2022 season was one I will not forget. Our team dominated throughout the regular season securing an impressive 8 wins, 1 loss & 1 draw and finishing us up in 2nd place on the ladder. Our team was gifted week 1 of Finals off to prepare for our clash against Minchinbury Jets in the Grand Final Qualifier. Both teams showed up to win, and it was a very close game showing true determination and drive. Unfortunately, a call did not go our way which resulted in Minchinbury taking the win over our Saints 10-8. The whole team, understandably, was disappointed by the result however I know that they will all come back next year wanting to go all the way!

I would like to thank my Coaching Staff, team manager Rebecca Wragg & our team trainer’s Steve Kerr, Nimo Filipo and Eddie Brown for volunteering their time throughout the season. Without their help the season would not have been possible. I feel honoured to have been able experience such a successful season with a great bunch of players. I have had the privilege of Coaching most of these boys for many years and to witness their development has been amazing. We finished up the regular season as undefeated minor premiers, registering 11 wins from 11 games played. We were prompted straight to the Grand Final Qualifier where we came up against a strong St Clair side. Despite challenging our Saints, we ran away with the 28-10 win. In the Grand Final, we faced Cambridge Park who came out firing and taking the lead 8-4 as we went into the half -time break. Our boys persevered and dug deep in the second half, securing the shield with their impressive 24-10 win.

I would like to thank my coaching staff for supporting the team throughout the season, my trainers Craig Hayward, Troy Taylor and Mathew Brown and my team manager Stacey Jones. A massive thanks to our amazing sponsors for this season; DMAC Agencies, Elastoplast, CableHUB and Brydens Lawyers. To the players, I would like to thank you for welcoming me as the Coach and putting your trust in me to lead you through the 2022 season. am beyond proud of the efforts each player put in each week both at training and on game day. We experienced both success and defeats throughout the season but the determination of the boys secured us a spot in the finals. Week one we came up against Mt Druitt Lions and we only just scraped through, finishing up in a 10 all draw but progressing through to week two due to being the first try scorers. We came up against 1st place Brothers in the Grand Final qualifier and the boys put in a gutsy effort but narrowly going down 8-10.

I am so proud of the season we had. The players dedication each week was clearly reflected in our results. We finished the regular season sitting comfortably in 1st position on the ladder after registering 8 impressive wins from 11 games played and were gifted week one finals off. Our Saints dominated week two of finals against the Magpies showing immaculate attack & defence with the final score of 42-6. The Grand Final we came up against 2nd place Brothers who throughout the season stayed right on our tail for top ladder position. Our Saints gave it their absolute all but Brothers proved they wanted it more and took home the win with their 14-10 defeat.

Although disappointed, I could not be prouder of the boys and know that the loss will only bring additional motivation as you continue your Rugby League careers.

To our very talented team, I am so proud of each player and our season overall. We knew entering a conference competition we would face more competitive teams willing to challenge us.

We finished up the regular season in 2nd spot on the ladder, only going down to Toongabbie throughout the season. Week one of finals our girls received a last-minute forfeit from St Clair which automatically promoted us to week two. Week two finals we faced Toongabbie: win we progress to the Grand Final, lose we have the hurtle of week 3 finals against Emu Plains. Unfortunately, we went down by 1 converted try with the final score of 10-4. Our girls got redemption in the Grand Final qualifier against Emu Plains showing up in full force with a final score of 30-0 and progressing us to the Grand Final against none other than Toongabbie. The girls dug deep and fought hard but ultimately went down as second best.

The sheer scale of talent across the team is unbelievable, and I know I speak on behalf of the club, parents, and my coaching staff when I say you all have a so much success ahead of you.

To say am proud would be an understatement. I feel privileged to have Coached this gifted bunch of girls through the season. The effort and determination you each put in every week both at training and on game day did not go un-noticed, and is a clear reflection of our success.

Finishing up the regular season undefeated gave the girls a lot of confidence as they started their finals campaign however knew that teams would come out in full force over the weeks to come. We faced Kellyville week 2 of finals who challenged our girls until the final hooter, with our girls scraping in the win and promoting them to the Grand Final. The team did not underestimate the talented Toongabbie side we faced in the Grand Final and for good reason. They put up a good fight, but our girls proved they were too strong, taking home the winning shield with their impressive 18-4 victory.

Unfortunately, we were faced with only a 4 team competition as a result of late club withdrawals which initially brought with it disappointment. However, we stayed positive and optimistic as we continued to work hard leading into Round 1.

We finished up the regular season in 2nd spot on the ladder, with 7 wins and 4 losses. We went up against Minchinbury Jets in the Grand Final qualifier where our Saints showed they were the better team, running away with an impressive 40-16 win. To the St Marys Rugby League Club Board and Football Office, your trust in me to guide the team throughout the 2022 season is greatly appreciated.

The Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team continues to be a very successful and engaging addition to the club’s elite rugby league programs. can only hope that emerging players coming through the club and district look up to the work the club is doing to develop the female game.

Upon reflection, I am proud of the season we had despite the result. We were presented with only a 9-round competition as a result of the 2021 & 2022 NRLW seasons being merged into 2022.

Our girls experienced a few wins early on in the season however it balanced out with some narrow defeats which ultimately impacted the team on making the top 4 and taking part in the finals. Whilst the season wasn’t what we hoped, we had several of our Saints acknowledged and rewarded for their exceptional individual performance. Abbi Church and Rikeya Horne were both selected for the NSW Womens Country Team, whilst our rising stars, Salma Nour being selected for the NSW U19 Country Team and Chantel Tugaga being selected for the NSW U19 City Team.

This year was without a doubt one of the most rewarding as a Coach. Coming over to St Marys for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect, however was blown away by the professionalism of the club from the Club Board, to the Administration and the Volunteers. Saints is truly one of the best Junior League Clubs running and it is a privilege to be apart of.

I would like to acknowledge the work of The Rugby League Manager, Adam Przybyla, who recruited a huge group of talented and ambitious players in the off-season which made my job as a Coach so much easier.

The team finished the regular season in 1st place securing an impressive 15 wins from 16 games (almost undefeated). Our Sydney Shield team were at their clinical best in their qualifying final against Hills Bulls securing an impressive 26-16 win and progressed to their 2nd Sydney Shield Grand Final.

The Grand Final Showdown was set, and it was a local derby between the Saints and Penrith Brothers who had a fairytale finals trip. A dangerous and dominate display from our team, they proved they were to classy and strong for the Brothers side and went on to secure their second Sydney Shield Premiership defeating Brothers 36-12. Courageous effort by the whole team both on the field and those who were on the sideline supporting. A special mention to Kaleb Farr who topped both the Top Try Scorer leader board and Top Point Scorer with 28 tries and 150 points.

CAIRNS TOUR

U13/1 TEAM TOUR – SEPTEMBER 2022 CAIRNS, QUEENSLAND

In November 2021, we were blessed with our new coaching group – David Vella, Brett Law and Daniel Vella, un be knowns to them, they had a long hard road ahead!

2022 season came around and we begun our footy season. We had a couple of milestones within our squad and a hard-fought season full of learning new skills, building new bonds and making new friendships. The talent amongst the group was phenomenal and made the task of coaching this group easier and more enjoyable as the season went on. A highlight for many was the game in Round 16 vs Brothers where we came so close against the top of the table. In February 2022 we begun the enormous task of fundraising for our team tour to Cairns, QLD. It took a lot of organising, hard work, dedication and time away from our loved ones, but it was all worth it in the end.

On 28th September 2022 we embarked on Cairns, QLD, for six days we cruised around Cairns, having the time of our lives with our boys completing many different activities and adventures with their families. Without the enormous contribution of Club President Warren Smith, this tour wouldn’t have been possible. His hard work, dedication, know-how and positive nature made this adventure something we will cherish and remember forever.

DAY 1: We departed St Marys Leagues Club at 6:00am bound for Sydney Domestic Airport, arriving in Cairns, Queensland at 12:30pm. After checking into the Holiday Inn, Cairns the families had time to relax, unwind and some spent the evening exploring the lively, vibrant night life Cairns had to offer. The Rusty’s Night markets were a hit on most nights, open til late and offered a variety of foods and services.

DAY 2: We woke up to a delicious buffet breakfast with all the trimmings, it was a great reason to get up early.

We were off on The Big Cat to Green Island, Great Barrier Reef. We had our snorkel, flippers and goggles and were off to find some beautiful sea life on the reef and relax in the sun. We had a yummy buffet lunch onboard the Big Cat, went on the Semi Submarine and Glass Bottom Boat. We visited Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat, were we meet Cassius, the largest living crocodile in the world. After returning to the hotel, it was time for dinner and more night markets.

DAY 3: Today we had a free morning to spend with our families, most of the players and families spent the morning by the pool, did a spot of shopping or caught up on some sleep.

We all had lunch at the hotel before our jersey presentation to the boys ready for their game in the afternoon against Babinda State School. We had a hard fought battle against Babinda State School who were great competition. The game was played in great spirits with St Marys JRLC coming away with the win.

It was awesome having our families their cheering our boys on, we were loud and proud supporters with our leader of the pack showing the crowds his dance moves as well, fa’afetai Lua. We presented Babinda State School with a full set of playing gear and $1000 to Cairns JRLC, they were both honoured to accept these gifts and were extremely grateful for this support.

DAY 4: An early morning wake up, buffet breakfast, then we boarded the bus bound for Kuranda Scenic Railway. We explored the Army Duck Rainforest Tour, Wildlife Park, Pamagirri Aboriginal Dance Show and Dream Time Walk. The Outback Restaurant put on a delicious lunch for us and we had yummy ice cream for dessert. After exploring for 3 hours, we travelled to the Caravonica Skyrail (Gondola). This took us through the mountains to the bottom of the hills, then we returned to the hotel in the bus.

We ate a beautiful buffet dinner and had a presentation, thanking the wonderful group who organised our St Marys U13/1 team tour.

DAY 5: A well overdue sleep in was required after a big day/night yesterday, the buffet breakfast hit the spot with all the trimming from bacon, eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, toast in every variety, freshly baked croissants, banana bread and fruit juice in five different flavours, it was hard to say no!

The players went swimming for most of the morning playing footy in the pool was very popular.

At 2:00pm a group of 45 departed for the Barron River to go White Water Rafting. It was exciting, thrilling and breathtaking all at the same time.

It was also the NRL Grand final Day, Penrith Panthers vs Parramatta Eels

The Panthers were favourites amongst our group but there were a few loyal Parramatta supporters. Final score: Panthers 28 – Eels 12

DAY 6: Regrettably we had our last buffet breakfast before we packed our bags ready for our trip home back to Sydney. Over the last six days we have meet some amazing people especially those who have transported us to our destinations. It was an incredible

the amount of people who asked where we were from, they were shocked we had come all the way from Western Sydney. Such am experience for young 13 year old’s is hard to come by, hence our gratitude and appreciate for our club, St Marys League Club for given the boys a memorable experience.

We made it home safely back to St Marys League Club at 6:00pm.
