a lovely sunny day in may saw half a dozen riders take a gentle ride to Bosham for morning coffee we started from the spring in central havant and rode out along the converted railway line, the 'Billy track' to emerge by the level crossing with the real railway and turned right along school lane to the level crossing at southleigh road.after a short while we were able to cross onto a shared pedestrian and cycle track beside the road all the way to the horndean road and then rejoin southleigh all the way through to westbourne this road is fairly light traffic and so westbourne village itself needs a bit of care because the parked cars on one side mean that most days traffic reduces to single file not really a problem but it enables us to admire the architecture if we have to stop passing through westbourne we turned into white chimney row with its half timbered houses and thatched roofs which make a lovely contrast from the more modern buildings around and made us feel we were really in the country, as indeed we were as soon as we turned the corner into old farm lane where this wooded lane runs parallel to the a27 riders could hear traffic seeming to come up behind us but our lane was empty the road flows on to woodmancote with the woodmancote arms, itself a popular destination for cyclists, opposite the unusual church constructed of corrugated iron and one of a series known as 'tin tabernacles'. we rode on past some undulations in the road known as 'switchback' after the nearby farm until at hambrook the south coast cycle route has a left and right junction. here, at the beginning of may there is often the smell of wild garlic growing in the verge, and a little further on wisteria hanging over a wall.then just after the string of edith cottages we turned right to see one of my favourite vistas of the open fields looking out towards west ashling, but carried on to cross the stream and join clay lane until we saw the sign for Bosham. a right turn into ratham lane leads down over the busy a27 to the railway crossing at Bosham station and the village crate at Broadbridge farm. the crate is a cafe formed from a couple of shipping containers cleverly converted. on this sunny sunday it was very busy with motorists, motorcyclists as well as cyclists, but we had our refreshments at a couple of tables together we took a direct route back along the a259 which may sound horrendous but peeled off to go home directly and another stopped at the farm shop for some watercress, then it was emsworth and the cycle underpass at warblington and back to school lane where we had started about two hours earlier, and all parted to go our separate ways. a pleasant ride in good company at an easy pace and wonderful sunshine. what a day! team were super organised but nervous about the reintroduction of pit stops and driver changes.they absolutely smashed the pit changes with very little practise and nailed it every time race one:all three cars got off well, safely and pushed hard. keep up got off quickly and kept pushing and quickly moved up the ranks to the top 10. chase kept up the pace and was not far behind.we reintroduced our third car for the first time in three years due to covid.and it was going really well but a driver issue caused the car to have to run through the pit for an extra time so we lost some time there race two:we almost lost keep up when setting up the car with the new batteries ready for the race as a battery terminal was incorrectly fitted by a team member and caused our speed controller to melt and catch fire! luckily we saved the wiring and we had a spare speed controller so the team got to work.an efficient change and race ready again with 20 minutes spare again a great start by all and some quick places made up keep up was flying and zoomed off. chase and team spirit two were following closely with the driver issue sorted for race 2 which allowed team spirit to fulfil its potential. keep up got up to 1st place at one point but lost battery power quicker than expected. some investigation needed here maybe more damage caused by fire than we thought? race results!

On 1 April Alan Mak MP for Havant visited Park Community school to talk to Year 8 about local, national and international issues. His talk was interesting and engaging; he shared with the year group his background, his own experiences as a student and how he beat adversity to become a member of parliament. Students were given the opportunity to ask Alan questions at the end of the assembly, and a group joined him in the Dickinson Centre afterwards. Alan was very impressed with the range of excellent questions he was asked. Questions on Ukraine, cost of living, sewage dumping, nuisance off road bikes in Havant Thicket and homelessness were discussed. hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the cat and rabbit rescue centre, hulky Bear last month’s pet of the month the rabbit chocolate mousse is now reserved, i am excited for him to bond with his new girlfriend and go to his forever home very soon. last month a baby rabbit was found by a member of the public by the side of the road and brought to the centre. my staff knew straight away that something wasn’t right with her and luckily as she arrived on a day our vet was here she was able to be checked over straight away. she had a really bad head tilt, one of the worst my staff have seen.this meant that when she was sitting normally her head was almost horizontal. my staff were sure they knew what it was and the vet confirmed it, she had e. cuniculi. e. cuniculi is a parasite that mostly affects rabbits and although it is fairly common it can affect some rabbits much more than others.this little girl was only 10 weeks old and had already been through so much, the vet believed that it could have been passed down from her mother we are not sure why she was found on the side of the road but she could have been dumped due to her illness. the vet prescribed her medication but it can take a while to work and is not always successful even if she does survive the treatment may not cure her head tilt but it will hopefully improve it. my staff told me she is such a friendly rabbit who runs straight up to anyone who comes in her pen i have my paws crossed that she will make a good recovery you may have seen my staff were fundraising for mBu march, well last month work started on the mum and baby unit to improve the ventilation.the nice workman have now fitted all the pipes in through the pens that will bring the clean in and remove the old air we still have a little bit more fundraising to do in order to reach the target needed to complete the work, but all we need to do now is fit the unit that powers it all. hulky p.s please keep an eye on our website www.crrc.co.uk and our facebook page for all the latest news and info regarding rehoming and centre life.

If you can cook it outside on the BBQ, it keeps the mess out of the kitchen, making it the ideal summer meal. yoghurt, roll in breadcrumbs and fry or bake until crunchy on the outside veg burgers – take a whole portobello mushroom, infused with balsamic vinegar and tamari soy sauce and grill until crisp on the outside and melting in the middle in the isle of wight they are growing incredible beef tomatoes which have so much flavour grilled or raw, alongside a generous slice of grilled haloumi, and you have an outstanding veggie burger that will even keep the meat-eaters happy The Sauce: you have to have mayo, and there’s a great choice of locally made mayos, starting with the garlic farm’s garlic mayo, or the condiment company’s delicious variety of mayonnaises, all made near west marden. ketchup? that tomato flavour is superb, but why not try a hot smoky tomato relish, made with chipotle peppers made by the real Jam and chutney company in the new forest? make your own BBQ sauce to get the sweet / spicy combination that works for you. a combination of ketchup, brown sugar, white wine vinegar,worcestershire sauce, then add the heat – mustard powder, smoked paprika and black pepper, and a bit of oil, cooked together in a pan, brought to the boil and then reduced to simmer for 5 minutes. Extras: smoked streaky bacon, slices of cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, crisped onions and pickles – take your pick or go for the lot, combined in a good white bun. as summer is approaching fast, we tend to think about the perfect drinks to have on those warm summer days. sauvignon Blanc is a winner throughout the year but during the warmer months its particularly popular due to its light, fresh, crisp characters. everywhere you go now you will see an abundance of wines made from the sauvignon Blanc grape and one country stands out from the most: new Zealand. during the 1990’s the grape variety became very popular, and the marlborough region was favoured due to the good drainage of its soil which encourages the vine to concentrate its flavours in lower yields.these low yields are what new Zealand wine growers’ favour i’m always telling customers that the same grape variety can taste completely different depending on where you are in the world and to me, sauvignon Blanc is the prime example to this. terroir (everything that affects the production of grapes, e.g., weather, location, soil etc) plays a huge part in the style of wine produced and as sauvignon Blanc is planted in many parts of the world, you will see a vast array of styles on the market. soil is very important, and the soils of the marlborough region tend to be quite sandy with a mix of slate this results in intense grassy characters with high levels of acidity and citrus characters. whereas sauvignon from the loire regions of touraine, sancerre and pouilly fume are altogether different. these wines tend to be softer with more pineapple fruit due to the limestone soil. in the pouilly fume region the topsoil adds a hint of ‘smokiness’ to the wine, hence the name.chilean sauvignon Blanc has become hugely popular due to their great value it’s the second most planted variety in chile and started to make a name for itself on the market during the 1980’s. here it’s all about the proximity of the pacific and the producers started to develop and push the cooler wine regions close by
